Back in High School we use to like to Roll & Rock as we called it. We would gather at a particular friends house . His bedroom had 5 walls covered in blacklight posters. There was fish netting hanging on the ceiling. With blacklight on we would sit in a circle on the floor and partake the medicinal herb while listening to Led Zeppelin. This album along with Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti were probably the most played albums. Ah....good times. I lost 2 of those friends 3 month's after graduation in a car wreck.
Grew up on most of what you react to and like most of us this age I find it gratifying to see that era discovered and appreciated decades later. And you do a great job of entertaining. I saw Zeppelin live twice in Atlanta (1973 and 1977). You rightly discerned the flange on the vocal. I've engineered and mixed records for a living since the mid 80s. That record was mixed by the very brilliant Eddie Kramer in New York. The first time I heard Whole Lotta Love when I was 11 years old it rearranged my molecular structure. Keep up the good work. The rest of this record will not disappoint you.
Agree and Ramble On one of my all time favs since early 80s.. Memories of her and our friends those times and such feelings emotions never die.. Live in today, hope and believe for good tomorrow > But ok to remember reminisce of yesterday time to time.. Makes me think of songs by Little River Band, walking through the park and reminiscing..
Fell in love with LZ in the late '70s. As a African American I noticed how LZ was grounded in the Blues and you get that black feel to a lot of their music.
I might have said it on the other thread, but Ramble On is my favorite track on this album. It's got all the great Zep magic I loved as a kid, including Tolkien references! I also like this song a lot.
As someone else mentioned, this song was inspired by the affair Robert had with his sister in law. It's one of the few songs that all 4 harmonize on. The flanger on Robert's voice helps give it an echo-y, dream-like quality. This entire album was written and recorded while on tour. They'd be in Vancouver, for example to play a couple of gigs and while there, they'd go into the studio to record, then when they'd move to the next stop, they'd go to whatever studio there was to record more. What an insane pace!

You're correct in saying LZ I and II sound very similar. Zeppelin had a backload of material ready to go; they could have started with a double album, but Ahmet Ertegan -- then the president of Atlantic Records -- wanted to string out the product to increase sales (my freshman college roommate worked for him, so I know the skinny on that). LZ III is a major departure from the first two, and the ensuing albums -- the untitled fourth and "Houses of the Holy" are also distinct from one another; the fourth was LZ's biggest seller, due largely to "Stairway To Heaven," but I think Houses is a delight. Not that it matters, but my favorite song on LZ I is the last one, "How Many More Times." But then that depends on the day of the week.
If I may make two suggestions before you start "The Lemon Song"... first, have the lyrics available because they'll have you giggling your ass off, and secondly, tighten your seat-belt. Beyond the vocals the guitar, bass and drums will be competing to melt your face.
