Great review of a really underrated classic. One review I saw of this compared it's plot to Dracula - Walken as the Count, with his "brides" being his female assassins with the main older detective as Van Helsing. It all takes place mainly at night and there's even a moment where you see one of the crime lords watching Nosferatu.
@popothechan I'm glad you're liking my reviews! I've been doing them for about a year now, and it's always great to meet new people and talk about the films we all love. And since you mentioned it, what DO you mean by "fate films"?
Great review of one of my favorite what i like to call "fate films". (Ask me about that if curious). I just found your channel today and already have seen almost every one of your clips. Great Writing and breaking down of the movies I have seen and loved and now have a whole new type of love for them. You display movies for what they really are, ART. Keep up the amazing work I hope to see more someday.
Is it just me or was Caruso hilarious in this as his Dennis Gilley character with his various rough lines such as "You have the right to remain silent, so shut the fuck up." or "Heyyyyy Scumbag, guess what, you're under arrest today."
@AussieMovieMan I'm a little surprised by how many people haven't seen this one. You're in for a real treat with this one. It's an excellent movie by a great director and has some pretty big names in the cast. I highly recommend that you check it out, especially if you enjoy gangster films.
The Schoolly D tracks are money. I did include a sample at the end, but didn't go into much depth, discussion-wise. Admittedly, this particular Video Discussion was a rush-job. I should've spent more time on King of New York, but this was during a period where I attempted to churn out as many videos as I possibly could, in as short a timeframe as possible. And, unfortunately, I think this was one of my Video Discussions that suffered as a result of this.
He also had a little cameo in the movie... none the less, i stumbled upon your work and see the value and really like your picks and comments, suscribed!
@lampyman101 I imagine the only time he gets animated on the set of CSI Miami is when they hand him his pay check :) But he was a lot more hungry as an actor when KIng of New York was made, and I think his work in this film helped him land the role on NYPD Blue.
@thebrb30000 BTW... Caruso seems quite animated in this, I've seen a few CSI Miami recently and he barely breaks a blink let alone a character trait. ;0)
Excellent review as ever. Walken is such an odd creature but it's weird how he seems to go through that weirdness and come out the other side to be convincing as a character. You should check out Nostalgia critic's '11 most awkward Christopher Walken Moments' if you haven't already, it's very entertaining
@lampyman101 I haven't seen that yet, but I'll check it out after this post. King Of New York, I feel, is the turning point in Christopher Walken's career where he REALLY let's his oddball charisma fly loose. He gave haunted performances in his prior films, like The Deer Hunter and The Dead Zone, but compare his work in those films to his work in King Of New York, and you can see the difference.
@The2badrats Thanks man, I appreciate it. I know, it's such a good movie. Walken and Ferrara have made some excellent films together, but I think this one is their best collaboration.
@thebrb30000 "Fate Films" are what I call movies that you just stumble upon without knowing what they are or are about. King of New York is a prime example cause I randomly caught it on KTLA years back when they showed great movies for those with no cable.I was about 13 and knew of most of the cast's work (Love movies ever since I was 5) I could not believe so much talent could be in one movie.Shortly after seeing it I wrote my first script. It was like FATE that I had to see that movie.
Scarface is a remake character, Frank white isn't. So in my opinion this is classic as well, not better or bad. Why compare them? They're nothing alike. Just Gangster crime flicks.
@DocHackenbush For sure. It's a good movie to add to the collection. And if you're a big Christopher Walken fan like me, then it's definitely worth revisiting.
@thebrb30000 That I saw this movie and it had to have an effect on me enough to want to do something I am now trying to make a living out of. Thanks to King Of New York and all the other movies I've seen that had an impact (Including a few of the other movies you have reviewed). I have been writing stories/scripts for 14 years.
Not a great analysis, but in terms of context the performances were the key dimension to the watchability of this movie..all were in some respect on the up, or at their peak and correspondingly, all delivered. Some cute set pieces that exhibited their abilities, but much of the administration of the film was corny and unsophisticated. Accordingly, your reference to Scarface as the prototypical gangster movie perhaps reflects your judgement on this. Both films contained parts and sequences which were of merit, but always with both, a lingering feeling of superficiality were the remembered outcomes...
The whole *point* of 80' contemporary gangster Films *was* cool set pieces, lack of hard realism, and superficial versions of the streets. I feel like you stepped out of a time machine from 30 years in the future to critique the film
One of the greatest overlooked gangster flicks! Saw it in the movies and still have VHS😎✌
Agree Absolutely 💯 magnificent film
One of the most underrated films from the gangster genre
Nice rundown of one of my all time favorite movies.

Your review was DOPE Tito, DOPE. Ghetto fabulous bravado!!! Your words are like bullets baby!
"AM I BLACK ENOUGH!!!" Love this film!
One of the greatest cast ever put together.
I appreciate your analysis mate, and tend to agree.

The most underrated gangster films

What setting of this movie? can i know? for my project purposes please.🥺
Très bon film 👍
Okay, I'm gonna buy this movie today. I've seen it but it's too long ago. Time for a revisit.
I regard this as a classic movie. 👍
Walken has his own elite category. No one else comes close.

you forgot the epic Schoolly D tracks....

He did! Where is this cameo dude!
when they heist the place and try to kill everybody, police being the heistmen, schoolly d is in those scenes
Gonna have rewatch it again for his cameo and for a refresher since it's been so long, what fucking great film
TOTALLY Underrated.
AllStar Cast (NY Playaz) that ALL got Career Bumps off this one!
This is one of my favorite gangsta movies. It's classy.this drug dealer had balls.
@lampyman101 I imagine the only time he gets animated on the set of CSI Miami is when they hand him his pay check :) But he was a lot more hungry as an actor when KIng of New York was made, and I think his work in this film helped him land the role on NYPD Blue.
Anyway possible to see review of Ferrara movie "Ms.45"(1981)?
@thebrb30000 BTW... Caruso seems quite animated in this, I've seen a few CSI Miami recently and he barely breaks a blink let alone a character trait. ;0)
Allstar cast of top level actors in this, some early in their careers
Excellent review as ever. Walken is such an odd creature but it's weird how he seems to go through that weirdness and come out the other side to be convincing as a character. You should check out Nostalgia critic's '11 most awkward Christopher Walken Moments' if you haven't already, it's very entertaining
He’s a great actor
CLASSIC movie

you should do more Ferrara films, espeically THE ADDICTION

I didn’t know Tom Green was into gangster movies
What's your take on Carlito's Way. Does it fall in the same vain of King Of New York?
It is a classic
David Caruso, for an Italian he doesn't half look like Jimmy Mulligan from the next block, you know Jimmy.
WALKDEN IS SOME ACTOR.
@TheMartyJRantzenCode Definitely check it out. It's a classic, IMO.
Some don’t get it this was 80’s style an mannerisms very different in 2021.
realy did you ever seen Once Apoun a time in amerca by sergio leone that to my mind is the greatist gangster film
@thebrb30000 That I saw this movie and it had to have an effect on me enough to want to do something I am now trying to make a living out of. All he had to do was think of Natalie Wood and boom . Emotions that are bottled up on the surface.
I enjoy this film but the script and narrative is a little undercooked and unfocused.
Walken just looks the part full stop.Great film never on tv,why?
Ok
A cartoon gangster classico.
Ghetto fabulous bravado lol it's true though
What
everybody wants to be a gangster . well we do buisness
Analyze American me . West coast gangster movie.

I'll take your word for it. I made this video almost nine years ago, and I choose not to rewatch it. I'm not really in the mood for cringe right now.
