Something old, something new, something borrowed and something seriously out of print. Thoughts on this list and the questions i raised about GW games going out of print. Let me know your thoughts.
With you on Talisman. We still bring it out once or twice a year at our house, and have a good time enjoying it for what it is. And Fury of Dracula is my #1 favorite game.
Fantastic work! I have been playing GW games nearly exclusively for 32 years and you have put together a fantastic list. My top three are: 1. Blood Bowl 2. Herosquest 3. Space Hulk
As a new board gamer (came from video games) I had heard about Warhammer and knew it as miniatures and painting but that was it. Didn’t realize how much of a universe there was. Very entertaining and educational lunchtime video! As always enjoy your content!
You should definitely try to play Forbidden Stars. It's one of my favorite games ever. I'd also recommend checking out Space Hulk: Death Angel if you can find it. It's really effective at capturing the feel of Alien without having burdensome rules.
I was surprised not to see Dungeon Quest on this list. This was the game that got me into the Games Workshop world. I also quite enjoyed the card game Space Hulk Death Angel.
Ha, i first played dungeon quest at a convention when i was about 10 or 11, so 1988 or so. I think someone died on their first move and i thought that sucked and haven't played it again.
Dungeonquest is the best GW game out there. You have everything you need in one box, and you can play several games in a night. No two games are the same. Mostly we would sit around and laugh at the ways we died. I still have my original game from 1989.
Diskwars probably deserves an honorable mention. Back in the day it was the cheapest way to get a full minis conflict game experience, without the minis. Like all other one-hit wonders by GW, it is now very hard to get.
100%. Great shout. A great game not many tried. I've got it (with both expansions) on my shelf next to Battle Lore 2nd ed, another fantastic game that FFG stopped supporting .
I love Forbidden Stars, it's probably my favourite dudes on a map game next to Rising Sun. It's a wonderful mix of Game of Thrones and Starcraft. Unfortunately it's a bit complicated to teach and my gaming group isn't into those kind of games, so I get it to the table about once every 2 years, where I have to re-learn it a bit. There's a lot of depth and customisation in there that rewards repeat plays. Happy to play this with you anytime. (I also have Chaos in the Old World which I've never played).
That was like a trip down memory lane. I still have a few of their board games from the early eighties - Battle Cars, Chaos Marauders, Block Mania, Valley of the 4 Winds, Judge Dredd RPG, their version of Cosmic Encounter, Runequest RPG...and that's just off the top of my head! Nice to see Games Workshop getting a bit of love for a change.
Conquest is one of the best CCG's I've ever played, it just never took off the way it should have. Talisman is amazing, wife and I still play it every now and then and its a blast. DungeonQuest is pretty amazing, it has a lot of the same fun Talisman does of (move forward, see what happens, try not to die).
Great video Space Hulk is a amazing game, was one of my first proper introductions to boardgaming. Really great design and great terrain/models. Theres a fairly good videogame version you can get if you cant track down a physical copy of the boardgame, its called Space Hulk and theres also a sequel which I havent played called Space Hulk:tactics. Their both on steam.
One of the best things about Tabletop Simulator is that allows you to play so many of these games that were out of print two decades before my lifetime.
Agree that Chaos in the Old World is amazing. I think if you like Horus Heresy you'll have the fortitude to get into Forbidden Stars and like it a lot too. I think the FFG Warhammer 40k conquest is amazing even if not always well balanced. It's a very good 2 player area control card game
Great List. Back in the day Valley of the Four Winds and Dragon Masters saw quite a bit of play with our group alongside Blood Bowl, The 'quest' series, Armageddon, Space Crusade, Talisman & Dungeon Quest.
Ive played the necron themed space marine adventures and it had a bit of fun strategy. Choosing ebtween the different marines and judging who has rhe best weapons for specific situations
Very cool list. I have a lot of warhammer board games as I love the theme and have never been a fan of the tabletop games minus warcry. You have to try conquest btw it’s amazing!!! My top 5 1. 40k conquest 2. Blood bowl team manager 3. Chaos in the old world 4. Underworlds 5. Blitz bowl Honorable mentions warhammer invasion and forbidden stars. I haven’t played both enough unfortunately but like the plays I had.
They should bring back these boardgames like horus heresy, with the name edition in full swing it would bring alot of people into the horus heresy very easily.
I'd add "Block Mania" to the list of best GW board games. Based on the 'judge dredd' comic strip it was designed by Richard Halliwell (who also designed Space Hulk game but sadly passed away earlier this year). A new edition of Block Mania was released last year which included the expansion Mega Mania and 'Happy Hour' - a rules expansion previously only available in White Dwarf.
Bounced off the deck construction part of Underworlds but Blitzbowl is my JAM. All of the theme of Bloodbowl without all of the risk mitigation/ management simulator. Do wish this second season had some support. Cheers!
Blood bowls got a huge community on Xbox live I remember hero quest in Toys r Us I love the figures for it if you use them for dungeons & dragons all the time and I currently own rise of the orcs as well as blitzball and one that I'm putting together now called dreadfleet. And can't forget that there's many fine afternoons spent playing talisman
I'm a bit taken aback that you didn't mention Space Crusade. I've had most of Games Workshops board games, amongst other makes, I found Space Crusade to be an excellent game to play with my kids back in the day. I once bought game called Sorcerers Cave, it had cards for the dungeon layout, and small cards for the characters. That game was the one that caused me to collect figures, that game needed figures, and I became a customer of Games Workshop when they only had one store, which was in Hammersmith London. Yep, I'm old lol. Good video by the way 👍
I blanked on it, but it 100% should be included as part of the "quest" entry as it was fundamentally heroquest in space and is part of that line of games.
@@3MBG yeah, it was a better version of hero quest. Both versions gave some cool add on extensions, cool because of the extra figures 👍I had to get a couple of each, just for the figures 😁
Oh man, early on in my modern boardgaming life I had a chance to get Horus Heresy, Chaos in the old world, and the 3rd edition of Space Hulk . Not all at once, lol, but over the course of a year or two. always talked myself out of it, sadly. I did have Forbidden Stars, though! that thing is a legit work of genius.
Talisman is an amazing game that pits players against each other. My collage friends and I can play this for hours, and it takes hours. But the best thing about Games Workshop is... Heroquest. Bard is right the board itself is genius. Tiles... Ha, rubbish. Try using the Dungeon Crawler rules... truly an amazing game.
i recently picked up the Dragons tower expansion from third edition. brand new for like 200 bucks, including the awesome dragon figure. its a holy grail find for talisman enthusiasts. putting the cardboard tower together and stacking that dragon the top of it was like putting the star on a christmas tree lol
Heroquest and battle masters were my gateway to gw. Still have some figures for battle masters sitting around unused and unpainted, chopped off some parts of others for bits.
I was lucky enough to win all 3 in reasonably priced Ebay auctions over the space of a year or so. Armageddon is my favourite though, and stil a great game!
Just saw this and though it was a lot of fun. My first impression at the beginning was wow right at the start you have not played 2 of my favorites. Warhammer 40K: Conquest is hands down my favorite LCG. Its a blast. Each faction has its own feel. Forbidden Stars is a great game as well. The worst thing about these game is they are out of print and probably will not get a reprint. Forbidden Stars is dying for and expansion with other factions. I hope have or get a chance to play them. Space Hulk I have the 3rd edition. Fury of Dracula I have 1st & 4th editions. Horus Hersey was out of print and I found a brand new copy sitting on a shelf at a game store and I gabbed it. So glad I did. I love the way you painted your figures.
Forbidden stars has a bunch of fan expansions on BGG, quite well done from what ive seen. That game just isnt coming back i dont think, the FFG/GW split was pretty final and nasty.
I totally agree with you on Relic/Talisman! I play some rather heavy games (Pax Renaissance, Labyrinth: War on Terror, War of the Ring, 18xx), but I always have a great time with Talisman, especially with the wonderful Cataclysm expansion (that replaces the main board). I wish Relic had more expansions with just cards, you know the decks after one/two games.
@@3MBG Halls of Terra adds a new board with its own deck, but very few new adventure cards for base game decks. If Relic had a few more small-box expansions like The Reaper or The Sacred Pool it would have much greater staying power ;). Still, those games get as much hate as Monopoly and it's very much undeserved.
I bought Chaos in the Old World in college and played it twice with my friends and I don't think I've had a game fall that flat since the StarCraft board game. These days it's just collecting dust on my shelf because no one wants to play it. Every time you rave about it, I wonder if we missed something or played it wrong somehow.
Always enjoyed Space Crusade. Still play the Amiga version of the board game (on original hardware too). Blood Bowl and Space Hulk are always popular. Pretty sure my 1st editions of each are still at the parents. Not played them for a few years. Still have Gorkamorka and Space Fleet (later released as Battleship Gothic iirc) around as well. Both kinda fun.
The only Games Workshops games I have played are Space Hulk: Death Angel the.cooperative card game and Warhammer Quest: the card game by the Sadler brothers. I am very surprised the Warhammer Quest adventure card game didn’t make your list! It’s really good!
@@3MBG well, you asked for our opinion 😊. I love games that can be played solitaire or Co operatively. And sh:da is excellent especially given it's small footprint. I wholeheartedly agree with bloodbowl team manager though. 👍
My list would be: 1. Chaos in the old world 2. Blood Bowl team manager 3. Underworlds 4. Space Crusade 5. Blood Bowl After that I'm not sure. Hero Quest is great for young kids. I'm playing it with a 5 and 7 year old, which is a bit young but they're loving it. Talisman for me is terrible because it's long and there are no decisions. I think I'd enjoy it if it was over in maximum 30 minutes. I haven't played Space Hulk but it would probably rank well on this list. Warhammer Quest struck me as another game that you just sit in and watch the dice play (like Talisman).
@@3MBG Blood Royale is a real old school classic if length is no object (ideally a long weekend). It simulates a century of European history. Diplomacy with marriage contracts. Railway Rivals is straightforward but fun race game. In the first part of the game players are taking turns to build a rail network and in the second taking turns to race between random pairs of destinations. I recommend looking them both up. Two of my favourites from the classic Games Workshop era.
@@3MBG Ohhh, so that's the reason. I feel sry for you mate. It is the favorite game of my group. It even have a fan expansion Called Galaxy in Flames with Necrons, IG, Tau, Nids. And a new one is coming with 4 more. If you have a chance, try it out. Orcs and Chaos are really new player friendly factions.
Thanks for giving a nod to Conquest. As someone who got a kick out of the setting but had no desire to join the miniatures arms race, this was the answer. Played it heavily for 3+ years straight. I made a few video walkthroughs of some of my decks here if you'd like to have a look: th-cam.com/play/PLYi-9VPXymjdbSzDXITDYrbRMVQb98POD.html
Top 3 is a shoe in, Erik Lang is very talented. I did not like Forbidden Stars despite liking the Starcraft Game! I also never cared for the Quest games or Talisman at all. The way they release one and gone games is bizarre. The models are getting ever better and are priced better in the board games than in the wild :) Armageddon was fun but ultimately I would rather play Krieg!
It's a shame you haven't played Forbidden Stars, it probably would be your number 1 (or at least top 3). It's genuinely a fantastic game, but yeah, super hard to get, I had to buy mine second hand and import it from the US, so it was a kit of money for a second hand board game, but it was worth it
most of your list I agree with, although I am not one of those that likes Talisman..... i remember when it got reprinted and I bought it and was so excited to play it..... and it just fell so flat. and im not one who minds dice rolls and randomness in games, but after the first couple hours it just became so tedious. Also i would have put mighty empires on here, so so good, i would love to get a copy of that. also if your looking to play forbidden stars i might have a copy i would be willing to part with, ive only played it a couple of times. really good game but i was hoping for some expansions.
That's Talisman though, i guess its a measure of managing expectations. Some nights, we just want a dumb game. And it's a dumb game :) My friend Scott has a copy of Forbidden Stars, and has offered to teach me to play
Underworlds should be higher. It out-scores most other GW board games on ruleset, strategy, accessibility, variety, in fact pretty much everything except any kind of campaign element.
A mark against it though it it has had very little penetration outside of people who play GW games already. Never seen it at a wargaming or board games club being played.
@@3MBG that's fair, but doesn't take away from the quality. I actually played it recently at my board game group, running a 4-player game. One of the comments was 'It's a lot more boardgamey, and a lot less wargamey than I expected '.
There were some older games that def did not make my list that i have played, like Block Mania, Chainsaw warrior, Judge dredd. Stuff before GW became just a warhammer/40k factory.
ah the pain remembering how bad cursed city is. that this game not even worth to mention in the same sentence as blakcstone fortress and other quest game. at least community made rule is somewhat salvage the game for me (and the model that i can use for warcry)
@@3MBG hmm to oversimplify cursed city problem is the scaling (heroes' lvl vs number (or difficulty) of monster) in this game really bad is like playing zombicide on lowest intensity (yellow) with max level heroes
My gaming group has been making noises along the lines of wanting to play it. And well, i no longer have any of the other games in the series so will likely keep it
I likely wont do a full 3 minute format review, just because its impossible to get and GW appears to have already moved on from it. It might get mentioned in another video though
*Thumbnail has Games Workshop logo on it* *title is The Top 10 games workshop board games* *The intro talks about how the miniature games are excluded* *Half the games mentioned don't have miniatures, or have less than 20* Honestly mate, what the heck.

No, i dont think so
@@3MBG Blood Royale is a real old school classic if length is no object (ideally a long weekend).
Good list. completely forgot about no.1 and no.2. THought space hulk would be number one for sure but good choices.
Top 3 are all super good
No Forbidden Stars?
I mean wow, that's interesting.
It is a legend.
Never played it sorry.
The fact it was abandonware is one reason i never got to it.
@@3MBG Yeah, it is a shame it was dead on arrival...
No board but Gorkamorka was lots of fun back in the day. 💁🏻
Nice list bro highly appreciate
Thanks for giving a nod to Conquest. As someone who got a kick out of the setting but had no desire to join the miniatures arms race, this was the answer. Played it heavily for 3+ years straight. I made a few video walkthroughs of some of my decks here if you'd like to have a look: th-cam.com/play/PLYi-9VPXymjdbSzDXITDYrbRMVQb98POD.html
8:00 two more : Chaos Attack, and Warmaster.
Dungeon Bowl was so much more fun for me than blood bowl. I'm genuinely perplexed as to why it's vanished from people's consciousness.
I loved dungeon bowl, weird teams, smaller player count, teleporters, it was so gonzo
@@3MBG The random chests was added craziness. Then there were the rebounds off the walls..
i found this vid by trying to see peoples thoughts on Cursed City. it’s in the shop now, idk what was going on before
It was weird, it was available for 3 weeks, then gone, then back a year later. So odd
Wow, didn't know half of these existed!
Blitz bowl is hands down number 1 for me
You picked the wrong Space Marine Adventures game. Labyrinth of the Necrons is great. And Space Hulk Death Angel (card game) should be here too.
The entry is for the whole series, Rise of the Orks is just the one i had available to take photos of
It's a shame you haven't played Forbidden Stars, it probably would be your number 1 (or at least top 3). It's genuinely a fantastic game, but yeah, super hard to get, I had to buy mine second hand and import it from the US, so it was a kit of money for a second hand board game, but it was worth it
I really never got to it because i played the starcraft game its based on and didnt dig it.
most of your list I agree with, although I am not one of those that likes Talisman..... i remember when it got reprinted and I bought it and was so excited to play it..... and it just fell so flat. and im not one who minds dice rolls and randomness in games, but after the first couple hours it just became so tedious.
And it's a dumb game :)
My friend Scott has a copy of Forbidden Stars, and has offered to teach me to play
@@3MBG yeah, I guess when I want a dumb game I would rather play something shorter. Or something more exciting like cutthroat caverns.
That's 100% fair :)
Thanks for the vid
Underworlds should be higher. It out-scores most other GW board games on ruleset, strategy, accessibility, variety, in fact pretty much everything except any kind of campaign element.
A mark against it though it it has had very little penetration outside of people who play GW games already. Never seen it at a wargaming or board games club being played.
@@3MBG that's fair, but doesn't take away from the quality.
I actually played it recently at my board game group, running a 4-player game. One of the comments was 'It's a lot more boardgamey, and a lot less wargamey than I expected '.
Which is a fair comment. I think people who like gloomhaven for example could really get into it
Have you played Heroes of Black Reach? I also really dig Blood Bowl Team Manager!
No, i onyl found out heroes of black reach even existed about an hour ago. Might try and track it down
@@3MBG The Heroes system is really fun while still being quite tactical. It’s a miniature war Gane sans miniatures and terrain
Nice shirt and nice list!
I've decided i'm gonna be the one guy in board gaming who isn't always in a t-shirt. lol :)
Honorable mention: chainsaw warrior!!!!!!!!
How did Kings and Things not make the list?!
Oh wow, i forgot they made that. I mean, that's going back a long long time.
@@3MBG Also Warlock Judge Dredd Dr Who and the one based on the comic in White Dwarf. I still have the first two - probably not worth playing.
There were some older games that def did not make my list that i have played, like Block Mania, Chainsaw warrior, Judge dredd. Stuff before GW became just a warhammer/40k factory.
I would add Railway Rivals. Great game.
Not one i have played sadly.
What about Dreadfleet and Battlemaster?
Dreadfleet is one of the worst games i'v ever played lol, terrible game. Totally forgot Battle Masters was a thing
Horus hersey... is that Al Pacino Scarface rip haha 08:03
100% is. Back when GW had a sense of humour
I spotted Russian Front. Good memories.
Getting rise of the orks if I can find a copy
Yeah, i think this one was only in a store like Target or Walmart in the US
Blood Bowl is life!
Been playing the same human team since i got them to replace my plastic ones in 1992 :)
GW killed my FLGS. The company is toxic AF, That being said... "'Chaos in the Old World' is amazing.
GW do that a lot
ah the pain remembering how bad cursed city is. that this game not even worth to mention in the same sentence as blakcstone fortress and other quest game.
at least community made rule is somewhat salvage the game for me (and the model that i can use for warcry)
Having not played it yet, what's so busted about it?
@@3MBG hmm to oversimplify cursed city problem is the scaling (heroes' lvl vs number (or difficulty) of monster) in this game really bad
is like playing zombicide on lowest intensity (yellow) with max level heroes
That's a really good example because i know zombicide pretty well. So, lots of busy work, not much threat
From gw I only played 40k... and that takes selling a liver to pay for it 😆
Err... How'd did you get a copy of Cursed City ? Great upload btw !
They sent one to me. As mentioned in the video, GW send me the occasional board game.
@@3MBG Thats fantastic ! If you don't want it / want to trade please send it to your fellow board gaming buddy in Aust ok :)
My gaming group has been making noises along the lines of wanting to play it. And well, i no longer have any of the other games in the series so will likely keep it
@@3MBG If you guys play it please make a review as I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, thanks for your comments as well ok.
I likely wont do a full 3 minute format review, just because its impossible to get and GW appears to have already moved on from it. It might get mentioned in another video though
Terrible sound) it looks like you really need lavalier there)
But the content is pretty good)
I do and i have one, just due to other pressures haven't been using it to cut down on editing time. (New baby = making videos when she's sleeping)
Games Workshop = $$$$$
Plis make more videos of 3 minutes 😭
I make one a week at least and have done since the channel started. So ok. Some topics take more than 3 minutes though
@@3MBG Thank you, I really like those videos!!! My favorite was 100 games in 3 minutes! *Suscribed*
Man I though you mean the best workshop board games to Tts, not some minis games good I hate minis
Maybe next time :)
*Thumbnail has Games Workshop logo on it*
*title is The Top 10 games workshop board games*
*The intro talks about how the miniature games are excluded*
*Half the games mentioned don't have miniatures, or have less than 20*
Honestly mate, what the heck.
