Here's a general guide for getting and holding combos: For starting combos, you can either get the first hit on your opponent with the "right" spacing, or you can hit-select them. (Allowing them to hit you first, then hitting them back while you're still in the air.) For holding combos you need to maintain 3 block spacing. Get much closer than that to your opponent and you'll enter their range. Release and re-press W key to maintain that spacing.
