  • It is a pretty debated topic on whether its better to start larping as a player or as npc. So In this video I will give you some reasons for and against either of them, so you can decide what fits you best as a starting larper.

What do you think? Is it better to start as NPC, player or is it something else?
As usual, small disclaimer ;) larp is different around the world, so things I say in this video don't have to be true for every larp. For example I know of some German larps where you also have to fix your own costume as NPC. So as always, do check the available info of the larp you want to attend!

For my *very first* LARP I bought an npc ticket because I had no idea what to expect and what play style I would like. This turned out really cool for me, we had some of that lovely down time waiting for players to show up so we spent the time doing actual training in sword fighting! I also got a good understanding for the lore and used some of the meta info as a reason for my character to have heard rumors from the land which caused her to venture out from her sheltered life 😁 I've learned enough about my play style that I don't think I'll ever full time npc again, but it really was the best way for me to dip my toes in ❤

Yes! That sounds like a great introduction to larp. Knowing some of the lore through npc'ing before making your character can indeed also be a really nice thing for that extra bit of flair~

"The backstage is on fire." That definitely sounds like the average larp...
My first larp event I started a character as an NPC. By the end of the event the N had fallen off my tag, and I ended up playing that character for the next 6 or 7 years or so. "You don't have to dive into everything immediately." ... What witchcraft is this? ;-)
I generally prefer fully immersing myself in a character, so for me most of the time playing is the way to go. I do/did NPC at some events, but over time I tend to find myself drifting towards the playing side whenever I hang around the same larp for too long. I enjoy bringing someone else's idea to life, and have had some really good times with that though, and you can still bring life to a temporary character. You just get to explore the character less over time, as you more often than not don't tend to play them for extended periods of time, or multiple events.
A nice thorough analysis though. I initially was surprised that the concept of a DPC (Directed Player Character, for those who don't know it, generally a character who is mostly autonomous, but with an 'agenda' that can be guided by the organisers) but that is unlikely to be a niche that a first-time larper ends up in, unless they're specifically invited by someone they already know in the organisation. And then that will probably be more guiding for your choice anyway.

It is pretty much the same for me, I started as an npc as well, and after a few years drifted more to the playing side. Though I do have larps where I love the monster concepts so much I'd probably never be a player character.
And I considered talking about dpc's but I don't think they are used very often, and would complicate the explanation a bit, but yes, it is definitely an interesting concept.

Where i am from most LARPs require a certain amount of games played as a PC before you can NPC. The reasoning is if you mess up as a character it affects you but if you mess up as an NPC it affects the other players. they also want you to get used to the envorment, rules, feel of players etc.

Interesting, I have heard it as a recommendation by some, but never as a requirement.
