Sykes' solo on the 1987 album version is one of the most electrifying guitar solos of all time. It sounds as exciting today as it did 30 years ago. He was in a class of his own. Too bad he and DC never truly got on.
Girl, look how you talk about Vivian Campbell, have more respect for this phenomenal guitarist. He was nothing less than the best guitarist who ever went through the DIO and one of the best virtuoses of that glorious time in their career. Vivian manages to do everything Sykes does with equal talent but in his own way. His playing style and version of his Whitesnake solos are as sensational as Sykes'. Stop being a Sykes fanboy by belittling the other guitarists.

@@armandoaraujo6128 are you kidding me 1 I dont care what kind Of Strat you have this song and 87 album was recorded with mostly Sykes Black Beauty Les Paul and some solo Sykes 60s Fender Strat, Sykes used Mesa Boogie amps these two guys with their Strats, Marshal amps and there Technique Style have different sound. You have tin ears if you cant tell the difference plus Vandenburg butchers Sykes solos you just want to Cry and Campbell he was good with Dio he shouldn't have left.
I seen this tour back in 87 or 88. Loudest concert I’ve been to. Probably why I can’t hear anything above 12 KHz now days. Can’t get enough of Aldridge’s drumming. One of my all time fav drummers!

I think that was a great solo by Adrian. No one will ever match Sykes' solo, but it was tasteful and fit the song. Vai's solo on the 89-90 tour was great as well...just different interpretations. Too bad Coverdale has never released a live album from this tour. This was the band that hooked me to rock!

Lovely intro. Very instinctive and natural guitar playing. Does Vandenberg's wild vibrato really make him better than Campbell, no I love the contrast. I think Campbell is paying more attention to the subtle harmonics in the feedback for instance. Two different players! Coverdale's voice sounds very 'thick' from some heavy touring, kinda like it!
@Tspsoldierboy / I saw them in Richmond Va nd Viv got held up in customs with passport issues and they had to play the gig without him, just Adrian Vandenberg. I was disappointed to say the least as I was a huge Viv/ Dio fan. Saw them the next night in Roanoke and Viv was there and saw them 3 months later when they started to headline! Amazing! Saw them 3 times in 90 with Vai as well.
They never played the solo in 87'. When I saw them, they jumped right into the middle of another song. Such an iconic solo, why would you skip that? I know Vivian could play it easily. Just learn the solo.
Vandenberg asolutely dominated Campbell on this tour. He playing was spot on. Then came his injured wrists. I have a Whitesnake bootleg of this tour and Vandenberg owned Campbell on the disk. But he never played on Slip of the Tomgue, which he composed all songs for.
I’m from the 70’s, so my favorite guitar players are from that era. Seems these 80’s guitarists were primarily about speed. An unfortunate Van Halen legacy, though not knocking him. I do think Sykes was/is pretty good though.
I hope John Sykes made a fortune from this album. I greatly admire Steve via, but even he couldn't save Whitesnake from the uninspiring commercial hell without Sykes!
i've heard that rudy sarzo's mic isn't even on - that he can't sing at all, he just supposedly "looks cool workin' the mic." same thing when he was in quiet riot. if you pay attention, you can never hear his voice. helluva bass player though, and a super cool and nice guy.

Frustrating for the music fan who likes how a band sounds. Look I've been wearing a patch on my back for over 25 year's in an M.C. we get pissed off at each other and sometimes we brawl and knock the shit out of each other. But when that's done we go back into the Clubhouse have a beer together and we are brothers to the bitter end. If anyone thinks a musicians ego is bigger than a bikers. Then you've never met a real biker in your life. Families fight, but generally at the Coda, musical end, we're still a family that would literally die for each other. Just as we did in the Military. We've never worn make up or teased our fucking hair. Point is, when most band get together they are brothers inseprable, but bands generally break up permanently after fights. Quite the opposite. Salute.

Erm Crying In The Rain is actually a new version from a previous album same with Here I Go Again, also Fool For Your Loving from Slip Of The Tongue. Amazing how The Sykes fans seem to have completely wiped from history Bernie Marsden, Mick Moody and Mel Galley. Yes Sykes is a great talent but most musicians are so don't knock musicians just cos they have different styles. Yes some are not the right fit for certain bands. There is a John Sykes Live In Japan CD and he does some of the songs he recorded on 1987. He's a decent vocalist too.
I just have to say something to all the guys who do not like some parts or any of these solos, Whitesnake was opening for the Crue on this tour and did not have much time for anything. I have never seen an opening act do a guitar solo before or since. And trying to compare almost any guitarist to Vai is pretty stupid! Take this for what it is. I just wish Adrian could still play. I was 18 when I saw this tour and it is still the first opener to kick the headliners ass i have seen.
The Saints and SInners version is great, but the Sykes era1984 tour version is still the definitive version..in fact the 1987 album version is pretty much a facsimile...Sykes defined the song even if he didnt write it

Couldn't agree more. Saw this tour in San Diego. If I had to do it all over again I would have left after Whitesnake and headed down to Tijuana and started partying two hours earlier than what we did. To this day Motley Crue is the worst band I've seen live. Hell I even saw Leann Rimes once and I would see her again if I had the choice between her and Crue!...
Would have loved to have seen Sykes and Vandenberg together that would have been awesome. Someone commented all about speed.
