Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE, is the brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain. When it occurs during birth, it is sometimes referred to as intrapartum asphyxia. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE is triggered by a combination of an interruption of oxygen circulation, called hypoxia, and ischemia, which refers to blood flow restriction.
