- They are one of the world's most loveable creatures, but would you recognise them without their distinctive black and white coat?
This video reveals the life of a giant panda from the second it is born. And not just any panda..... these are the world's only surviving panda triplets!
In 2014, giant panda Juxiao surprised and delighted panda lovers everywhere when she gave birth to the the triplets at Chimelong Safari Park in Guangdong province, China.
17,000 people visit to see the pandas every year.
Fast-forward 2 years and Meng Meng, Shuai Shuai and Ku Ku are celebrating their 2nd birthday. From birth to today, it’s all captured on camera.
Meng Meng, the oldest and only female, is the quiet one and the chubbiest as she is the least active. Next comes Shuai Shuai who’s a lot more mischievous and loves to wrestle with his siblings.
Ku Ku is more chilled, but him and Shuai Shuai keep each other trim through lots of play fighting.
Why are these pandas such a big deal?
Firstly, there are only 1800 pandas left in the wild. Panda breeder Chen Shu Qing explains the difficulties they face with mating and how she helped keep the triplets alive in their early days.
Secondly, in the wild, a mother can only raise one cub, meaning that only 2 of the 3 cubs would have survived to adulthood.
Aren't they just adorable.

Panda moms are so big compared to their newborns. It is so amazing how gently they handle their cubs.

Mother pandas often accidentally kill their young, thats why they usually have to be separated until the babies get a little older and wont be straight up accidentally crushed

The triplets are named Meng Meng (“Cute”), Shuai Shuai (“Handsome”) and Ku Ku (“Cool”)
When the mom lies down after a delivery for some rest the third panda pops out and the mom is like “what the hell where did you come from ! “

Charlina Konwar : when I first began working as a hospital materiality nurse in the early 1970s, we didn’t have fetal monitors, nor sonograms, nor several of the other modern equipment commonly used in Labor And Delivery rooms now. We used a fetascope to take the unborn baby’s heart rates. It was surprising for all, when a woman delivered her baby and then suddenly started to have a second hard labor and deliver the second baby. No idea at all that there there were two babies to be born. One time a woman’s husband hoped for a son as they had three girls at home. His wife had another girl and he was really nice about having another daughter. The doctor looked at the woman and her husband and said “there’s another one”. The husband actually said “another what”? Just as he said this, the doctor held their new son up and the husband ran out of the room shouting that they had a girl and a boy.! It was wonderful to see the joy they were feeling.

The panda breeder looks like a proud mom herself. Her smiles are full of 💕 love, she’s so lucky to have the triplets. I think pandas are the cutest babies, they are so lovely and cuddly. They’re fun to watch as the get older and play. They’re wonderful and beautiful.
The Chinese are doing a stellar job in bringing the pandas back. However, creating enough wild space/land for these pandas is a problem. The forests are being cut back further and further. There are areas set aside, but they're very far apart from each other. Inbreeding in the wild populations is a very real problem. However, I have faith that solutions will be forthcoming. The pandas are a symbol for the Chinese, and are much loved by the Chinese and the entire world. I truly hope we come up with solutions to our ecological problems and protect our wild spaces and the animals that live in them.
Wolong national nature reserve is very well protected and dedicated to wild pandas in Sichuan province, China.

What I find so incredible is how energetic and robust ALL 3 cubs are immediately after birth, squirming and thrashing around. That must have been an incredible relief for both Mama and the keepers.

What the Chinese learnened from learned from panda beedimg can help other species. They are now introduing pandas living into natural habitates.
Yes, the programs started about a decade ago and they called it "panda university". They chose specific pandas which were super cautious and less curious. Then they raised these pandas with minimal human interaction. For me it's pretty rough for these selected pandas but It's defiantly a good move.

Question...did you completely take all of the babies away from Mom or did you allow her to care for one at a time? If not, how is it that Mom knows and wants to care for the babies when you reintroduce them to her? Is it a process? Thank you once again for sharing this great and informative video.
Hi Erica! Thanks for your comment, we're so glad you enjoyed the video. The triplets were constantly rotated with their mother so they were all able to spend some time with her. Chen Shu Qing, the breeder, suggested that without their intervention, there wouldn't be enough milk for all three cubs. If all three pandas were left with the mother constantly, she would naturally pay attention to the strongest cub and neglect the weakest, which is why they need to be rotated.

She said they let mom take care of one at once, because pandas are not capable of nursing multiple babies. Then every five days switch to a different baby, and rotates.
