  • Breaking Barriers: Women in Parliament celebrates the progress that has been made towards gender equity at Parliament. We've made significant strides towards achieving gender parity - for the first time, our parliament has a 50/50 split of men and women. In this video, Commonwealth Women Parliamentarian NZ Group co-Chairs Ingrid Leary MP and Nicola Grigg MP, and Green Party spokesperson for Women Jan Logie MP what they think about the challenges women have faced, the progress that has been made, and how we can embrace equity.

    We achieved gender equality years ago in NZ.
    - The pay gap is not a result of women being played less because they are women, but because women on average make choices that lead them into jobs that pay less (not as many women are keen on being tradies for example. Which I know because there is one woman in my Electrical Course).
    - Equity is a substandard virtue compared to equality. Equality allows anyone to do anything, getting ahead and falling behind because of their own choice. Equity forces the hyper-achievers to achieve less and pick up the slack of others. Equality allows for anyone to be an MP regardless of gender or race, but equity demands that 50% be women and 50% be men, which is unreasonable. The best should be made MP's regardless of their gender.
