    Hi Gary. I really liked your Flower to sow in August. I live in Mississippi right on the border of Zone 8a and 8b. I don't know if my Zone 8 is the same as your Zone 8 in the UK but I do grow some of the flowers you mentioned for fall here. I am also planting three types of Nasturtium, Chamomile, Larkspur, Delphinium, Feverfew, and Lavender.

      I think that the zones are quite similar in terms of growing conditions although you may experience a slightly average temperature in Mississippi compared to obey hear in the UK, although we did have temperatures in excess of 40 degrees centigrade last year for the very first time! Kind regards. Gary

    This is a great video, packed with advice that those new to growing flowers can learn from. How about another video looking at the same, or similar plants and showing how we can collect seeds to sow for coming years? Although I’ve been gardening for years I have still to learn how each type of seed can be collected, stored and then germinated. I’ve managed to grow calendula, French marigolds, lupins and sweet alyssum from my own seed, I have failed completely with hollyhocks, edelweiss and sweet Williams. All constructive advice will be very welcome!
    PS - Bellis make great additions to the garden.

    Hi Gary. A refreshing change to have a video to watch on flowers rather than just veg. I have Violas as well as Pansies on the go at the moment and Wallflowers. I also have Foxgloves I am growing in trays as well as some in the garden that have self seeded. As far as Forgetmenots are concerned I have had these in my garden for many years and they self-seed every year. I must admit they do tend to be a little too invasive so I get rid of quite a few seedlings during the summer months just to keep the number of plants down to a manageable number and then I move the plants around n the autumn as required. You seem to be getting a lot out of your garden, both veg and flowers. Hopefully you are not missing your allotment too much. All the best. Trevor.

    Thank you Gary. Very lovely mix of things to get sowing. I'm in the process of pricking out my winter pansies and violas - I'm using the cool wave mixes, as they do so well throughout the winter and the trailing varieties are lovely over the edge of baskets and planters. I'm experimenting with ornamental cabbages this year too, which are growing well indoors at the moment, to protect them from pests. I just need the colour in the winter, to brighten up the patio. Happy planting!

    Thanks Gary I have many of these either in my garden or I’ve got the seeds, the one I’ve not heard of but I absolutely love is nigella, the colour and shape is so beautiful. I don’t tend to grow my flowers in rows, I do a more scattered approach, just because it’s a bit chaotic which is like me, and doing all my vegetables in rows I need some chaos. The majority of my flowers are actually perennials though. X

      Nothing wrong with the scattered approach as I’m sure it produces a wonderful display. Even though I try to take a more planned approach it often still looks random which is quite strange! Kind regards. Gary

    I would like a few tips on how to sow and germinate the seed as I’ve been unsuccessful with some in the past. They’ve germinated but then I’ve lost them when the temperature changed. Should they be covered or left open.

    • @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
      @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for your comment and high is greatly appreciated.
      I usually sow my flower seeds in small quarter trays. I add the compost then give it a good soaking before I add the seeds and then cover with a think coat of compost.
      I then put the seed trays in my mini greenhouse and wait for them to germinate. I keep an eye on the compost at ensure that it is constantly moist, but not soaked. As the seedlings start to get slightly larger I will water them more regularly but always with a fine spray rather than a watering can. I will eventually thin out the seedlings and put them into cell trays when they are large enough.
      Finally, always check the back of the seed packets as some flower varieties require higher germination temperatures, so they will either need to be in sunny position or possibly started in a heated propagator. I hope this helps. Kind regards. Gary

    • @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
      @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much for your question Andrea which is appreciated.
      The best time to plant tulip bulbs is typically during autumn (Fall), ideally between October and November. This allows the bulbs to establish their roots before winter and bloom beautifully in spring. I hope this helps and kind regards. Gary

    Hi Gary, Do you not collect your seeds? I must have a kg of seed heads from my Calendula and I didn't even plant any this year, they over wintered in the garden, plus new ones grew from the seeds from last year too.. I have also kept my Poppy seeds and will keep my Nasturtium seeds, which I will volunteer them to places around me and about that may need some colour. My mother always told me to collect the seeds of my favourite flowers rather than buy.
