Catching Salmon We Can Finally Keep! | 2023 Kenai River Fishing, Smoked & Canned

  • We had been seeing the numbers go up and up for the sockeye salmon down on the Kenai Peninsula and it basically took Levi barely mentioning going, for us to go. We packed up in about 15 minutes and headed 6 hours South of home to try our luck at this massive salmon run!
    We did not fill our limits for the 2 days we were fishing but we did learn so much and had an amazing time. People are helpful and friendly and it was a beautiful new drive for us.
    To wrap this video up we brined, smoked, and canned this very first batch of salmon! As always, we are not professional enough to offer advice on how we are doing these things so please make sure to research before following along in our tactics. We are learning every day!

    I hope you know that you never walk out on it when i recedes and looks like a nice beach. It's Not.
    You two remind me of my husband and I when we moved to Alaska in 1970.
    We loved the Kenai to fish but it looked really high when you were there. Not good fishing and we never kept the pinks, a softer not as good fish as a silver or king.
    You think you were tired then wait untl you catch a 60+ pound King.
    Do somemore reading on life in Alaska for fishing, hunting etc.
    You'll learn it's like no other place you've lived. Good Luck.

      Everyone else fishing also agreed it was super high! But they had a crazy run of 150,000 salmon a day so we had to try. We love it so far. And if I ever catch a 60lb king you can probably just count on it being my funeral. 🤣 thanks for watching!

    Only thing is about pressure canning two stacks high is you need a layer between the two just like you have on the bottom of the canner! great job though!

    We use to can our large trout and Kokanee by just skinning then brining and packing our jars and adding a jalapeño. We used it for salmon patties. Lots shorter time than smoking first. Love yalls adventures.

    The fishing trip was awesome great job filming. I jumped when the fish hit the GoPro. lol
    Now !!!! That's making someone feel like they are there with you.
    Taste a vision is my next goal for you I think I'm right there with your husband wanting a bite of the fresh smoked Salmon

    Last post, but fun watching you two learning.
    Fishing out of Homer fo Halibut wa a yearly thing for us. I caught 101 lbs one it took quite a while to bring in. You don't want one that big 20 30 or smaller lbs is best.
    If you want between fishing and hunting will keep yu in the most awesome food you've eaten.
    Moose is the best, caribou hotdogs the BEST. My husband used o fly across the inlet, catch a silver come home and I'd have the BBQ ready. Good days. I'll leave you alone now but love to share stories of Alaska. ❤❤

      We'll be moose hunting in about a week! We shore fished from Homer the other day but someday would love to hop on a boat and bring home some halibut. Thanks for watching!

      ​@@beccanlevisalaskawe went halibut fishing in Ketchikan and caught a few salmon also. We never did find a way to fix halibut that we liked but the salmon was good 👍. Glad y'all caught some!

    Live in nikiski, you did ok for first time, looks like the first day was the colleges hole, second day not sure if it was swiftwater or airport hole. Colledge hole is typically better downstream from ware you were or upstream from the upper path. Your rod will make a vast difference in hookup too. Many other places to go too without having to pay, you seem to be down home folks,have been wrong before tho😂, i can give you tips on fileting and smoking, not an expert mind ya, just a cranky old ba$/@#d and happy to help young folk

    I really enjoyed this video. I love fishing and it just felt so good to know, that you got 12 dinners out of that trip. I’m not sure where you have to fish to get Halibut but it sure is gooood. Thanks for sharing

    Something to think of is when you cook down the carcasses the juice is a good broth to keep, but the meat that falls off saved along with the broth, can be make into some awesome cream salmon chowder. Instead of claw chowder , salmon chowder.
    Of course you gotta gut it if your gonna boil off the meat.

    Don’t know whether your interested!? But another couple Eric and Ariel from ‘simple living Alaska’ do lots of fishing and food preservation of many different things, might be worth a watch to get some ideas.

    Nice to see people playing by the rules, because there are quite a bit that break them and keep snagged salmon on the Kenai.
    You guys are new, but you seem to have gotten into some good fishing areas and talked to some people, which is a good way to learn. Just don't start in with the ones that rip their hooks through the water, because that is just straight up snagging move and no need to do that. Once you start to learn more, you will start to just know what size of weight you should start with, then looking at the water judging the water depth is where you will start to know what length of leader you should start with. Sometimes you will find that you might have to shorten a leader if you are getting body snags or snags like those two that were released, but sometimes changing up on weight size helps on hooking them better as well. It is also nice to see that you know how to smoke fish and use a pressure canner as well, because a lot here in Alaska will go dipnetting and just waste a ton of fish by throwing it out before the dipnetting opens to go do it all over again on harvesting salmon that they will just let a lot of it go to waste.

      Saw so many keeping snagged fish last year on the Kenai I gave up saying anything. They weren't US born individuals either.

      @@CS-xv6mx I have seen some Alaskans keep snagged salmon, but many out of state people that when I said something about it, I heard, we paid big bucks to visit, so we are keeping all salmon we hook not matter what to take something back home. I said, wow! So you can break the rules because you paid big bucks to visit Alaska, so would you feel it is alright if someone visits your area to break the rules on fishing or hunting because they paid big bucks to visit? A trooper hit one of those groups on one of my trips and they had like double or even triple limits from dropping their fly to rip hard.
