My aunt was in Berlin during the collapse. Like most women, she never spoke about her experiences, but everyone in the family knew what had happened, just not how often. She was what was then called hysterical, today it would be called post-traumatic stress disorder.

my mum was Austrian ,same with her, when the war ended she was in Germany worked as telephonist in the army her and the other young girls had to make their way home any way they could she never spoke about it other than she hated the Russians said they were never given leave they behaved like barbarians.I am 75 and wish I had asked her questions I now realise how her behavior was sometimes a bit strange ,deep down she was a strong woman brought us up with a good work ethic we never had a great deal but didnt complain .

My grandmother was a child in Berlin during the fall. She told me how the Russians made them keep their apartment doors open or unlocked. My great grandmother disguised her a lot younger then she was (she was actually 11) and my great grandmother made herself look a lot older with ash. My grandmothers elderly grandad was there through some and would shoo the soldiers away when they would come in drunk saying “only old ladies and babies here.” Absolutely get what the SS did was evil and they were monsters, but children and innocent always are the ones that suffer from others crimes. My grandmother also said when she was little she had to stay with nuns while she was very sick and had to be quarantined. She said they were incredibly lovely. When the Russian’s came she found out when she was older the nunnery was attacked and the nuns were murdered and raped. War is sad, anyone that messes with children, no matter what side need to be strung up.

The Eastern Front was pure hatred and fight to the death. We in the West tend to think that D-Day and the Allied advance through France were pivotal. but it was the cauldron in the East that defeated Germany. The price the German civilians paid was horrendous and inexcusable, but it was also inevitable after what the Germans did in their ascendency. One cannot underestimate the animosity the Russians felt for the Germans, an animosity well deserved. I can sympathize with the German civilians who suffered at the hands of the Russians, but I also remember how these same civilians elected and supported Hitler. Actions have consequences.

Now, imagine the husband not protesting and living his life with his wife after the Russians left. It happened to him and to thousands others, it's an act of violence to destroy the spirit of the woman who is raped and the men who can't protect her. It's not just an attack against one woman. When I hear such stories, I develop an attitude or belief that it’s only the enemy soldiers that do the raping etc, but sadly it’s our allies too, and am reminded of my uncle (a New Zealander) who fought in the Vietnam war alongside our allied US soldiers, and he witnessed atrocities committed by these US soldiers of raping the women and pillaging in each village as they progressed throughout the war. My uncle came away when the war ended with such a disgust of the US and wanted nothing to do with anything of the US, for example, my cousins weren’t allowed to watch US tv programs! I don’t know military ways, but it seems ALL soldiers have a right to commit such horrendous crimes against women during wartime, which to me is just diabolical! War is usually started by pathological men and fought by men, yet it’s the women & children that suffer the most!

I’d have to disagree with your statement of woman getting the worst of war. I’d rather be raped than die surely. Also president Johnson was popular amongst woman. A majority of American woman remained unaffected at home while they voted for a president who forcefully drafted American men sending them to their death in Vietnam. Around 60% of women favored Johnson. Yet only 10,000 woman took responsibility for their elected officials in Vietnam.

    • @xman666soad
      @xman666soad 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

You need to understand why high command allowed these things in Vietnam.
A short summary is that because the tours were only 1 year long on average, most combat vets were leaving as new recruits were coming in to replenish.
This lead to a lot of “fragging” if you don’t know what that means look it up.
So in order for the platoon leaders to keep order and prevent themselves from being fragged by their own privates a lot of atrocities were “allowed” but not because USA command wanted that, it was to keep the military personnel from defecting or worse mutinying.
Not saying your uncle isn’t justified in his hate or disgust with those soldiers, but it’s not as simple as saying:
US soldiers were raping women and killing babies.
If those soldiers hadn’t been “allowed” to relieve some stress from losing friends, being on the front lines, fighting an enemy that you can’t see, being away from families, and honestly a lot of them were criminals inscripted into the military to avoid civilian justice, I know of a handful of stories myself of people being taken by military out of jail or prison to avert criminal record.
Yes Vietnam was messed up, we shouldn’t have been there in the first place but imagine how much worse things would have been for the military or our country if some of the things had not been allowed.
There’s only so many times you can hang soldiers for this as punishment before they turn on you.
      They weren’t professional soldiers.
      They were basically mercenaries.

I lived in Germany for much of the 60s, from the ages of 11 to 17. My dad was military and stationed there and when he retired, continued to work there for an agency of the U.S. Govt. I was curious about WWII history and living there piqued that interest. To my mother’s great discomfort, I’d come home from the PX newsstand with paperbacks that were coming out at the time (1961-62) with what I suppose were the early wave of holocaust survivors’ accounts. They freaked me out but I could not stop reading them. It was a light bulb moment for me as a 13 year old that the world could be insanely brutal and I realized if the Nazis could do it, it could happen again in other places. As a result, I could never looked at adult authority in the same away as I had. Another book that I always saw at the PX newsstand was entitled The Big Rape. I was a little embarrassed to browse it at the newsstand, but I finally did. It was nothing but harrowing accounts of survivors of what this woman describes. More brutal insanity from the other side. I don’t know if that book is still in print.

I've never been to war, Thank God! The fact is that this happens all too frequently. This happens in all wars, regardless of your nationality. many time our military leaders ignore this because of the enormous stress put on young soldiers fighting a war that someone else started. I am proud of our armed forces and the Men and Woman who serve. Many times, they are put into a position they may did not ask for or understand. But is important to know that war should not be taken lightly and used only when absolutely necessary such as self-defense. To many time the real reasons of war are not disclosed to the citizens of that country. Leaders' egos are never an excuse to go to war.

This was the education I actually got when I flunked out of college and spent the year just walking through the library and reading. When you read actual accounts of war stories, you would almost think that war is done just so women could be raped. Its said there wasn't a woman between four and eighty four that wasn't raped as the russian army came through. For those wanting to laud america, in 1994 the Japanese government was begging the US army to get out of Japan because they were raping so many girls.
I know veterans who laughed at Saving Private Ryan and then crying when they realized people actually thought that was realistic. You have to SERIOUSLY hunt down war stories, and when you find them, you wish youd never heard them. But you go around youtube and you'll see tons of these stories mostly aimed at other cultures, as if sexual violence never happens amongst europeans and those of european descent.
