- Jewish Holocaust survivor, Henia Bryer, was born in Kielce, Poland in 1925. She survived the Radom ghetto, Auschwitz I concentration camp, Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Krakau-Plaszow concentration camp, Majdanek concentration camp, and Radom-Armee-Verpflegungslager concentration camp. Henia was liberated from Bergen-Belsen by British armed forces.
In her 1995 testimony, Henia recalls the experiences of women during the Holocaust, who were torn from their families, stripped and shaved, forced into sex slavery, and tormented by female SS guards.
“They selected 100 young women and they were beautiful. Each one of them was prettier than the other. And we looked at them and we couldn't understand what was going on there. They were well dressed and they seemed to be well fed, and they were beautiful, each one and one. And eventually we found out what was the story with these girls. [...] They were working in a German brothel. They used them for the soldiers that came from the Eastern Front. That was their work.”

Mrs. Bryer, your erudite and articulate testimony of your life, during those horrific years, is deeply moving and disturbing, and should be shown to Grade 7 Students everywhere. I will forever be astounded by Survivors, who were forced to endure trauma upon trauma, and to do it while cold, starving, beaten, and often infested with lice. I am so glad that you went on to marry and raise a family - you and your husband look like Matinee Idols in your beautiful Wedding Photo, and as a mature woman you are incredibly beautiful. Thank you for sharing your important story - those in positions of power must NEVER FORGET how fascists were allowed to destroy the leading democracy in Europe, and turn it into a killing machine. “Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it”. Thank you again Mr Spielberg! This foundation may be your most significant work. My deep appreciation and interest. I started experiencing these survivors accounts during Covid lockdown, and ive found them to be important to me. Im an 82-year-old grandmother and few things beyond family mean anything to me now. I feel transported by the transcendence and power of these survivors heroic stories. And i recommend them to everyone. I get impatient with how folks tend to turn away from this content. Recognition of the Holocaust and its relevance today in these scary times is crucial.
I agree 100% ! Years ago, I bought every book about those evil times to educate myself !!! Why weren't we taught this in schools??? Never, ever forget😢

I used to work at a bank with an old polish lady and every Friday she would eat an entire smoked fish for lunch. All that was left was the bones. And the stories she would tell. She was a Holocaust survivor. She proudly wore her tattoo. Bless her. She taught this young hillbilly girl so many lessons.

She is such a well-spoken and polite woman. The way she tells her story with a matter-of-fact tone reminds me of my grandmother's storytelling about her time in a Ukrainian ghetto. My grandmother was only six when her family was rounded up, yet she remembers every detail as if it happened yesterday.

To endure and see such cruelty must have been more than one could imagine. Human resilience against evil is profound. We pray this type of cruelty never happens again.
Very well done, the interviewer did a great job interviewing this survivor. I have watched a few of these and this was the best one by far. Mrs. Bryer is very well spoken strong, feminine woman. Thank you for sharing your story. I used to live next door to a a very nice Holocaust survivor in Michigan USA, she was a Ukranian jew, she had a tattoo on her arm also.

I give the interviewer a A+ 🤩 even though it’s heart wrenching the things that happened. She was able to tell it in such a way it made it much easier to hear. The interviewer did an amazing job of letting her tell the story. I wish he’d do all the interviews.
I'm very thankful Henia is able to tell her story. It is important to the world and I am glad it is preserved. I am impressed with the strength of her soul that comes through as she talks about her life. She only broke a little talking about her older brother giving up his coat.
I just googled this lady and I think as of last year she was still alive and living in Cape Town..

Re: 1:42:15 We children of Survivors were affected whether our parents spoke to us or not because THEY were affected, and that affected us even though we didn't know WHY their attitudes toward various things were the way they were. I never even heard the word "Holocaust" until I was in sixth grade when a friend of mine told me about it. (PS, I hope I spelled "affected" correctly for the context ; ) ).
Hi Susie, well said and observed. I have watched many testifies with wonderful post war stories and I'm so impressed how 'normal' many survivors were able to raise their families. I have also heard their children praise both parents for the way they were raised whether knowing or not knowing. G-d has certainly showered His blessings on these wonderful survivors. 😊

What distinguishes these Sho'ah accounts is that they are very factual and forensic. They avoid emotion and concentrate on facts. I am Roman Catholic but own my debt to Judaism.

I could listen to Mrs Bryer speak all day! She's very articulate, and seems unafraid to reveal the horrific details of what she experienced during the war. Even after all of this, she comes across as very soft-spoken and gentle.
An amazing story - really makes you appreciate the lifestyles we have these days.
I listen to these Holocaust accounts because their therapeutic effects are more valuable than gold. Whatever traumatic events that occurred in my life pale in comparison with what these dear individuals endured at the hands of people who were admired, envied, and called "cultured.". As a person of African ancestry, slavery was horrendous, and I hope the Jewish people, those of them who are compassionate, will understand what our people endured for hundreds of years.

Even in 1995 some of these people were still relatively young. Now it's different. You add nearly 30 years to 70 and so few are still with us.

Jahveh bless you and your family, Mrs. Henia Bryer! You remind me of me der Viennese neighbour, Gerda Louise Jackson born Goltz from Reichenberg we met often almost day spending time together. Sie fled with one brother to Cape Town, before she and her daughter Annette returned with hudband Georg Simbrunner to Vienna. Mrs. Jackson also knew the jewish painter in Bloemfontein who invited us when I was AT his house in 1968 with the choir boys. Mrs. Jackson held intensif contact to her relatives and many jewish persons sie knew about. So you help me to understand her feeling involved by jewish people in her mind.

I watch "Schindlers List" and "The Boy in Striped Pyjamas" on occasion and they break my heart.

This video particularly was taken in mid 90s. For Jewish South Africans who fled from Europe amidst holocaust - I wonder if their children and grandchildren end up relocating again in 2000’s and onwards to other countries like Canada and Australia. Interesting thing about ashkenazi Jewish people is that sometimes by generation they grow up in different countries and speak different native languages like Yiddish, Polish and English.
At almost 70 Henia was a beautiful woman who along with millions of other ppl suffered through great atrocities. If she lived she would be nearly 100 years old. ❤

Pity this girl doing this interview didn’t listen more carefully often asking things that this lady had already explained. Several times this interviewer did this. Henia explains the snow was red with peoples blood as they were shot during that notorious death March that we have all heard about, a few minutes later this girl says What was the weather like. She also says where was your mother when it was explained she was left behind & liberated by the Russians. Needs to pay attention & listen more. She did it several times, just plain rude.
How these people survived I’ll never know & there is no doubt that they probably lived with PTSD without it ever being diagnosed & I don’t doubt their children also suffered in many ways.

I did work with polish ladies in Canada . Some speak fluent English some not . According to me They are nice people of course I visited Poland in Soviet Union times .
Lots of Jewish people I know first time while I was living in Toronto some time I talk to them . Even though my background Ceylon Tamils . & stand with Israel 🇮🇱

Why leave this poor woman to talk for a 2hour interview without a break or even a drink for her drying throat? Not kind. She is amazing: we don't know how blessed we are to have not had to experience the horrors she has.
Thay's what you got from this? This was filmed in 1995 and I'm sure if she'd needed water she'd have asked for a break.
Maybe she had breaks but they were cut from the film. I do suppose so
They take breaks. These interviews are done in their homes. When her dog started to bark they cut for a break. You can tell by her hair being slightly different.
There were breaks taken. I could tell from the filming stopping and starting again.
You can clearly see this lovely lady was given a break around the time the dog started barking. It’s obvious because upon her return, it’s clear she had touched up her lipstick.
Luck does not exist. God's Providence is in reality what they call "luck" God had work for you. You are a witness, important work.
My family was from the Radom Geburnia (province), not the town of Radom.
I’ve always wondered if any women who were forced to work in the brothels managed to survive.
Edit: How gratifying that she got to march in the parade for the anniversary of the Israeli state.

I feel somewhat bad about the first portion of what im going to say. Compared to many other testimonies ive never seen one where someone had so much luck. I would guess and say it was most likely due to being deported out of the ghetto late and two her “aryan“ looks. Even in an older age she’s beautiful.
She had a horrific experience; she is just so calm in telling her story.. it must have been hell on earth.
All of the survivors of the camps obviously were very lucky compared to the millions of people who were murdered in them.
