Did this to my new 2022 rav4 with the standard 6 speakers and was happy I did. Replaced the front dash and door speakers with JBL Club 3020 and JBL Club 6520. Used wiring harnesses from amazon. Did not use an amp and found the sound was much better. Lots of people suggest an amp, and I did not want to get that deep into it. I am glad to say it sounds great without and gives me all the audio I need.
Both JBL boxes state "high sensitivity for great sound even with factory stereo power" and it is true.
I was not a huge fan of taking apart the door or drilling the rivets (high risk of scratching and something going wrong) so if you are not super handy, you should have it done professionally. The dash speakers are super easy

I changed only the dash speakers, replaced them with jbl 3020. I installed the bass filters included with new speakers. The sound is better but the problem is that the dash speaker now sounds louder because JBL are 3 Ohm and very sensitive compared to the Toyota dash speakers wich were 4 Ohm. I don't ear the front door speaker anymore, most of the sound is coming from the dash. To correct this, I am planning to add a 1ohm resistor (20 W) to the dash speakers to decrease their volume.

Everyone's perception is sound is different. I enjoy the difference. Some may not. Would be good to add an amp to provide more power.

    • @Rav4Gen5

Without an amp, you lose bass. This was the case with many people. If you want to upgrade the audio on a budget, only do the dashboard speaker and add a subwoofer.
