- I was contemplating taking my vehicle to the dealership to complete the 30K miles maintenance, but the cost for what's listed in the maintenance guide did not make sense to me, not even sure if what's listed will be completed anyway by the dealership so I decided to do this myself, this is what this video is about.
You’re right about the oil level being between the two dots. With a cold engine, I would set it just about a 1/3 of an inch below the upper dot. Check your engine oil with a fully warmed up engine on level ground and with the engine off for at least 3-5 minutes ( like after pumping the gas ) take two measurements just to be sure. When refilling the oil after at the end of an oil change put just a little over the 4 qts in this engine’s case and then back off the ramps to level the car, wait a couple minutes and check the oil level and add as necessary. Don’t just measure 4,5 qts and pour it in as it’s possible that not all the old oil has drained out. By the way, on the hybrid when backing it off the ramps, place it in park and wait until the gas engine starts to make sure to refill the oil filter. You’re lucky, here in Canada at my dealership anyways, an oil change is over $200. I only get the dealership to do the oil while it’s under warranty not because doing it yourself would void the warranty but because the dealership may say it dies void the warranty. When using an aftermarket cabin oil filter remember the OEM Toyota cabin filter has the arrow pointing “ up” while most aftermarket filters show the direction of air flow which in the Toyota’s case is down which is what you correctly did with the Bosch. Don’t buy Toyota Air filters online unless it’s from an Online Toyota Dealership Parts site. There’s too many knockoff “ Toyota “ filters online. Here in Canada a Toyota oil filter at the dealership costs $10-$12, an air filter is $28-$40 depending on what vehicle it’s for. Genuine Toyota Oil is made for a Toyota by Mobil 1 but to Toyota’s specifications ( additives ). I would say that the Mobil 1 Advanced Protection oil is likely the same or very close to the same oil. A 4.78 litre ( 5 US quarts ) jug of Mobil 1 Advanced protection oil in a Canadian Walmart costs $54 but goes on sale from time to time at $34. My first oil change cost me over $240 because they changed the cabin air filter ( $45 Canadian dollars ). That was at less than one year old from new and they also billed me for 1.5 hours labour at $130 even though the car ( also a RAV4 Hybrid ) went into the service bay at 10:25 and was out again at 10:59 am. Supposedly as well as changing the oil they checked the brake pad thickness, tire treads, wiper condition, fluid levels ( they topped up the windshield washer ) checked the drivers floor Matt, light etc. Toyota calls for oil changes every 16,000 Kim’s which is 10,000 miles. On a Hybrid the engine isn’t always on as you’re on the electric motors for maybe 15-20% of the time, but 10,000 is too long so I “ secretly “ do a change myself at 8,000 Kim’s ( 5,000 miles ). Our dealership offered us their own personal warranty on the engine for the Life of the car IF!!! the oil changes are all done at the dealership. I don’t look forward to possibly having to have to use that warranty and hear how I dont qualify plus I don’t want to pay $200+ for an oil change after the Toyota Warranty ( 3 years )is up I will likely be doing all my own oil changes. Interestingly we had a 2011 Sienna that took 6 litres ( about 6 US quarts ) of 0W- 20 synthetic oil and I never paid more than $75 ( Cdn dollars ) for an oil change at a Toyota dealership. Also with that vehicle with them inspecting the air filter, they didn’t say the air filter needed to be changed until the vehicle had just under 60,000 miles and on our 2017 Highlander they also never said the filter needed to be changed but I’ve just done it myself a month ago at 65,000 miles.
I have a new 2024 RAV4.. Took to dealer for oil change only @ 800 mi (to get rid of break-in oil).. Got home and checked oil level (cold).. Assuming the two marks represent 1 quart, it read 1/2 qt. high (over filled)..
Went back to dealer and was told it should be measured hot after shut down (which measured to top mark)..
Got home, looked it up in owner's manual. Owner's manual states, "Warm up and turn off the engine, wait about 5 minutes, and check the oil level".. Following these directions, it read almost 1/2 qt high (over filled)..
That said, I want to make 3 points (Going by the manual):
1. You miss stated that you should; Run engine for 5 minutes and check (incorrect)..
2. The dealer was also incorrect.
3. Given the nature of the A25A engine, to get the most out of it, one must be almost annal in following maintenance intervals and procedures.. This is made more difficult by Toyota giving a 10,000 mile oil change interval (to conform with warranty & service agreement) when it should be 5,000 miles, and confusion over how to read the oil level.
Personally, I would rather be 1/2 qt low than 1/2qt high as I believe over filling oil will result in undue stress on seals and gaskets. I will maintain my oil level @ the top mark cold. This requires an extractor after dealer maintenance.
Well done with parts #s..Be advised; additive pack is different in Toyota & Mobil One.
Always have the vehicle on level ground to check the oil
We have a 2019 Rav 4 LE AWD with 119,000 miles. I replaced the air filter only once to vacuum and reuse it. The TCCN recommended 30,000-mile maintenance for the Transfer case and rear differential drain and refill. It's good practice to clean off sediment from drain plug magnets earlier from the factory.
Yes, I agree. Mine is a little over 40,000 miles right now, and I'm planning my transfer case and differential oil drain and fill soon, I like watching TCCN videos too, detailed to teach, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers.
@@WheeNC-DIY I didn't know TCCN missed the 30,000 mile maintainance shop did it at 70,000 miles everything then again myself at 119,000 miles. Cheap $112
Add in the Transfer Case and Rear Differential fluid replacement that I just did on my 2019 Rav4 Adventure at 30k miles. Dealer wanted $700 plus tax. I did it for about $100.
Good information, I don't remember these two listed in the maintenance booklet for this milage interval, will keep this in mind for sure, thank you for watching.
Which fluid did you use?
@@FindingIsaac Toyota Differential Gear Oil LX GL-5 75W-85. The stuff isn't cheap either. Even the replacement crush washers were around $4 each and you'll need 4 of them.
@De-Centralized I think it's a different fluid for hybrid Rav4s. Toyota ATF-Ws
Our 2019 Rav 4 LE AWD last week cost me $112 the Toyota dealer said I could substitute Valvoline Full Synthetic 75 w-90 GL5 for $12 qt instead of OEM $85 qt for front & rear diff.
DIY is the way to go. Just changed the alternator and hydraulic power steering pump on my Honda Pilot and saved a bunch of money. Also have a 2020 RAV4 that I do all the maintenance on. My 1997 Honda Civic which I’ve done the maintenance on since I bought it has 300,000+ miles on it and still runs like a champ.
Hi, I agree, I also have a 2008 Pathfinder LE V6 4WD that I've been doing required maintenance on for a while now and plan to continue and keep it going as long as possible. About 18 months ago, with help from my friend, we replaced the spark plugs on it, and that was an involved job, but saved a lot of money and was done properly with genuine parts. One thing I hate is the 15.5 miles a gallon that it gets using the recommended premium gasoline, wish it got something in the upper 20s but it's a big engine, cheers.
Impressive deal on the consumables! The task list does seem like it's managable DIY, but I would still ensure that a trusted mechanic does have a look at my car from time to time, just in case I have missed something important, especially if the car is relatively new to me. That's also why the maintenance log mentions so many checks.
Thanks, I am here bec a friend ask me to do an oil change on a RAV4. Please be safe the chocks should be placedat the back of the two rear tires. If something happens the car will roll down not up. I also make sure I inspect and check all the boxes on the maintenance check off list. It’s there for a reason. Since you are going to inspect the brakes might as well rotate the tires
Hi, yes, I do have chocks actually on both sides of the tire, The video only shows one side. Thanks for pointing it out. I do tire rotation with each oil change, which I do at 5000 miles interval. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers.
Ramps are a good investment.
Toyota oil filters are made by DENSO.
Not to be criticle but if you are going to use Blocks you need to put them in back of the wheels.
Hi, thanks for this information, I do use tire chocks on both front and back of each tire. Maybe it was not showing in this video, appreciate your comment, have a nice day, cheers.
After a few bad oil change experiences at the dealer I decided to do the same on my truck and car. It’s just a bunch of kids that work the express lube side . While some of them are good the majority don’t give a damn. They left oil all over my interior , didn’t clean up the spilled oil on my valve cover. Just a mess . Dealer charges me 87$ to do an oil change on my tundra and it cost me about 65$ so not a huge difference but at least I know it was done correctly and neatly.
Hi, I agree, my main concern at the dealership is if the job is done correctly and with good parts, doing this myself guarantees quality parts and labor. My dealership wants $95 for an oil change on my RAV4, doing it myself costs around $30 to $35 including genuine oil filter and Mobile One 0W16 fully synthetic oil, I do mine every 5K miles, saving me $60 each time. I do tire rotation at the same time as well. Thanks for watching and your comment, cheers.
there's a procedure maintenance mode that switches the engine one on this hybrid search on youtube.
Hi, thank you for this information, it is appreciated, cheers.
@@WheeNC-DIY you welcome brother
Being over the second upper limit oil dot on the measure is overfilled, it should be midway between the two dots only. The dealer is talking rubbish about being over the higher dot level.
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting, it's appreciated, cheers.
Midas can do a lot of things the dealership can do for a lot less.
I wouldn’t trust Midas on a new car.
I believe you used the wheel-chocks the wrong way. When the front of the vehicle is up, the vehicle is likely to roll backwards.🤔
Hello, you're correct, but I usually use wheel chocks on both sides of the tire no matter what I'm doing, so what you see here is only what's visible in video, but I have the same chocks on the opposite side on the tire too 😉. Thank you for watching and commenting, cheers.
As used to be toyota certified machine… we taking good long 5 mins too inspect under the car. 😆
Hi, good idea, except mine has cover protector underneath, I think I'll try to remove it next time at 45000 miles and do inspection as well, thanks for watching, cheers.
Hello, I just came across your video and you are correct. The toyota dealership charges triple. My roommate has a 2020 RAV4 and the Passenger mirror broke. I went to the dealership to ask. How much would it cost for the mirror and maintenance. They were trying to charge me $400.00 for everything. So I bought the mirror on Amazon and put it myself And I only paid $40.00 for the mirror.
Yes, they're trying to cover their operating costs, of course, but for things like routine maintenance and some small repairs, it's best done by one's self, this ensures quality parts and labor at the best price, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers.
How do you keep the engine bay so clean ? I heard that spraying water on the hybrid engine bay is not a good idea. Would you do a video on this if possible. Thanks for the video and the info.
Hi, you're correct. Do not spray water at all inside of a hybrid engine bay, I would say not even inside of an internal combustion engine bay. I usually just wipe clean what I can inside of the engine bay after washing the car with a rag that is wet with the car washing water. This keeps it clean enough. I will take your video idea and work on a video showing this. Thank you for watching and the comment. Cheers.
@@WheeNC-DIY thank you.
People ruin their engines changing oil every 30k. Low compression rings on the piston will shave cylinders. Low compression will be the result. Also excessive oil consumption will follow. Oil change in perfect ( laboratory like condition) may be done every 10k miles. REAL SAFE VALUE IS exchange EVERY 5k.
Oh I totally agree, I changed my RAV4 Engine oil every 5K miles since I got it using 0W16 full synthetic oil, I was just doing the 30K miles maintenance here which includes an oil change as well. If I, in this video, gave the impression of doing oil change every 30K miles I apologize. Please everyone change your Engine oil at the specified intervals mentioned in your vehicle's maintenance schedule, typically don't go over 5K or 1 year without changing the oil, ask a mechanic if needed, I am not one, thank you very much.
He never said anything about changing the engine oil at 30,000 miles. He said change the air filter at 30,000 miles. He said to change the oil at 5,000 to 10,000 miles. If you’re keeping the vehicle for longer than the warranty period do it at 5,000 ( 8,000 Kim’s ). You’re right about the low tension oil / compression rings on the pistons and how more frequent and lower mileage oil changes will help prevent oil consumption issues down the line.
You got hella of a deal ! You are smart with it , if you need any advice i can help !
Hi, thanks so much, I try doing things on my own to be sure it's done properly and also save money, thanks for watching, cheers.
$4 for an oil fiter....in the EU it's $15!!!
In Australia oil filter costs at least $25.
You're really true, they try to make money out from you as much as they can, ac filter at Walmart only $17, they charge me $90, they're so grib off, cheese
Hi, I learned to do many maintenance items on my three vehicles myself to try and save money but also make sure quality parts are used, it's the only way, thanks for watching, cheers.
Car dealer maintenance is too expensive DIY is better and you can put quality oil.
I agree, I was "take it dealer and let them do it" kind of guy, I changed a little over a year ago to doing maintenance myself seeing how much money can be saved, plus knowing exactly what is used in the engine, parts and other items like oil or fluids, cheers.
You look like arabic ❤❤
Hi, yes, I'm from the Middle East, cheers.
People who complain about dealership service are uneducated in service protocol and should not be dealership service customers. You all know better and should do all your own service work.
Hi, I'm not saying I know better. What I'm saying is the cost is super high for something like this. Mine was going to cost me about $400, as you can see the parts were not expensive, so it is mostly labor cost. If I do the labor myself, then I'm saving money. Nothing against dealerships, the truth is they charge too much for simple things, It's a known fact. Thanks for watching, cheers.
@@WheeNC-DIY 3 oil services for $150 at my local dealership…. Which includes oil filter replace… not air filter that you could do it yourself…
I only had bad experiences at dealer service department. I will do my own maintenance as much as I can. Their sales department was top-notch though.
