It's not necessarily music, but vibrations. It's difficult to say how much of music is actually understood by other animals, but we do know that some birds understand it because they can hold a beat, match notes, and sing harmonies. Scientists theorize this is because they also have a "language" center in their brain, which many other animals do not.
You are not "just imagining" that either. I would have preferred they edit out all the unnecessary blah-blah-blah humorous commentary and just spend more time showing the Rhino listening, feeling, reacting. Humans can remember what music actually is by watching Rhinos. I wonder if animals are listening to the musical sounds, or honing in on the inner emotional musician telephathy? Or Both? ...Musicians have to 'tune in' to play well with each other, but rarely realize thats what they're doing because it just feels so natural and normal.
I absolutely love that they shaped their entire performance around Tensing's reactions, trying to gauge what she might enjoy. Feels rightfully respectful to such a magnificent creature 💕
Holy crap... Why does zoo's not let classic musicians practice their art more often around the animals? Free ticket for the musicians and win for both zoo and the animals. This is like the perfect arangement.
I was once at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium on a day when they had opera singers giving a concert in a room off the tunnel under the polar bear pool. I couldn’t see the reaction of the animals but have often wondered.
How eloquent was the pachyderm zookeeper! Such insight into the rhino's mind. It was touching that she was delighted to be close to professional classical musicians. And the lovely musicians seemed to connect with the rhino.
We play lots of (recorded) music at our house, and the cats and dogs often listen. Mozart is definitely the cats' favorite, particularly the bright, "twinkly" pieces with higher notes. A couple of them will come whenever Mozart is playing. I can tell when the animals are listening to the music, as they sit or lie a few feet in front of a speaker instead of in their beds/usual spots. Occasionally they form a little two-species arc, a semi-circle of furry music appreciators. This is many different animals over many years. If some cats get too rambunctious, I put some Mozart on.
I sit in the pasture some Sundays and listen to music with my chickens. They definitely prefer classical. They gather around the whole time and listen to the program, then wander off when the talk program comes on!
not as intelligent as us, but yes. They don't really like crazy music genres like eloctro the way we do. But in terms of what we thought before, yes. Very. And that's so lovely.
There was a study done once on premie babies and the effect of music on them. The babies thrived when live harp music was played for them, but recorded harp music had little or no effect on them.
In the neonatal intensive care they play real hard rock and the reason for that is it keeps the baby's heart stimulated so we keep the babies alive in the neonatal into care unit and my son was in there for today so I KNOW
I have never seen a rhino up close before and gotten such a great view of that lip! It’s almost like a monkey’s tail! Btw, bless you people for brightening up that rhino’s day! ✌🏼💖
I think they entertain for us on a daily basis ...we should entertain for them if possible. That's the least we could do for what we have demanded of them for there life time. Kudos to the Denver zoo and this symphony for stepping up !
You’re often going to see this, especially in the wild. The keepers either cut them off, or they dye them pink....so as the ivory is useless to poachers. Sad, isn’t it?
@John Barber You obviously have NO idea what rhinos are supposed to look like. And yes, they are poached for their HORNS, too. And leave God out if it!
Although I've only been to see the Colorado sympathy once and been going to the Denver zoo since I can remember I can honestly say that you are cool people for doing such a cool thing for our awesome animal's. I really want to see if you played for the apes so I will subscribe. Thank you Colorado sympathy ❤️
Music brings joy. It’s food, literally, for the soul. Doesn’t seem to matter if you’re a human being, or a rhinoceros, elephant, or a beluga whale...it seems to touch their souls.
That type of enrichment should be done at every zoo! Plus, selling advance tickets would be a wonderful fundraiser for the Zoo. Between feed, medical care & staff = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Art class Next! 🎨
I love that yall used different songs and different types of music for each ones. So far, the music yall chose fits the animals perfectly and I can kinda see a Fantasia thing in my head as I'm watching
Love all these musicians taking the time to play for animals. I've been watching different musicians (professionals and amateurs) and the reactions of the animals to live music, it's truly awesome. Animals really do have souls.
My brother-in-law, a cellist, recently retired after 34yrs in the Colorado-Denver Symphony Orchestra. He also retired as principal cellist from the Colorado Central City Opera Orchestra after 25yrs. What a great collaboration of animals and symphony. Good job everyone...please make it a regular thing. Super terrific marketing for both entities as well.
This was a perfect end to my day. It started with meeting my hairdresser's dog--I'm never sure what to expect--I'm always happy when they let me pet them. And, I love seeing anyone enjoying music especially, animals. ❤ Thank you.
Music for the animals makes sense. I know in Portland Oregon zoo the elephants can chose to stay out on concert nights and they will hang out down by the stage and listen. Anything to engage the animals in our zoo’s
This is wonderful! There are other clips on YT showing a similar response with other animals. Thank to all the musicians who provide entertainment for the animals. Wish it occurred more often,
Enrichment occurs every day at these accredited zoos and it’s always different. Since I volunteer at a similar zoo, I don’t always see the animals interacting with the enrichment, but I often see evidence of it that they did.
So interesting to see what Tensing seems to like and not like. I hope that the Denver Zoo and the Colorado Symphony continue experimenting with music and different zoo animals. 😊❤
Loved the video, would be even cooler if the interview wouldn‘t be played simultaneously to the music. would love to hear/see the full concert without the constant disruptions.. :)
They should play Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf for her. It has lots of variety in it and is suspenseful. I think an animal would really respond to that.
It's always interesting when a rhino wants to "smell the whole package" to "find out what it's all about", especially if classical music is being performed in the LIVE situation.
I'm thankful to see an oboist that's not Peter Cooper. Had the animals been capable of such thought, they'd likely agree! On a serious *note* this was a neat experiment. I love the interactions between animals and musical instruments!
I'm more than certain that they like the music. I remember watching a few videos played to cattle. They really seemed to have calm reactions to the music from an accordion.
how SWEET she'll probably miss them very much if they dont visit OFTEN THANK YOU COLORADO SYMPHONY or ANY SYMPHONY musicians or even just ANY MUSICIANS AT ALL because yes ANIMAL LIVES MATTER TOO THANK YOU ALL

The musicians dressed for a concert. LBD, suit and pearls. Awww!
That is sweet. Thank all for taking the time to enhance the animals lives

You mean math
Mathematics is a universal language, but considering that music is math, I agree.
Music and love....

Wow she really liked that! She was moving in time a few times and following instruments with her whole head.
Wonderful.
Yeah I noticed that too she ended going up just like they did when they went up on their very last note...It was awesome ‼️

Yeah and fewer depressed animals.
Well, I'm not exactly sure zoos have any rule forbidding classical musicians from performing.
Or set it up as a public art display and have patrons throw money at them both splitting the $ (profits/donations)
I was once at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium on a day when they had opera singers giving a concert in a room off the tunnel under the polar bear pool. I couldn’t see the reaction of the animals but have often wondered.
Exactly Classical music needs to be presented outa the Box more often.
They need to get some musicians to play for the elephants, too.
The Colorado Symphony has played for elephants. Search for it.
There is channel where a guy plays for them in Thailand
Check out 2 elephants listening to a didgeridoo - they dance and wail and growl with it.

Rhino is so damn cute, ,,,,love these musicians
Love how they dressed for the occasion!
