It was not that bad. One has to take into consideration that this was a live performance, the artists are under tremendous pressure with a live audience and television cameras in their faces. I personally believe that it was very well done, despite the awkward embrace at the end.
Sorry, it doesn't compare with the offering done with Audra MacDonald and Nathan Gunn. It was so beautiful, that I can appreciate it down by anyone else. Take a listen, you'll hear and see what I mean.
The voices are wonderful for radio listening, but the visual makes me feel like he's cuddling up w/his mother. Sorry - Audra MacDonald and Nathan Gunn is the one!
Notice how Maria messes up the lyrics at least 3 times throughout. That's a big NO NO when it comes to Soundheim. Vocally she is always special but I don't even find her emotionally involved. In the other hand Julian is just dreamy.
People, listen to Audra and Nathan..they have nice voices but it's a travesty of the song...and there is absolutely no chemistry...Audra and Nathan give me goosebumps everytime...
The show is not written this way. The story is about two LONG lost lovers expressing their heartache for ALL THE MANY Years they could have been together. That's why casting a young man is downright stupid.
Two problems: she's not vocally strong enough - he overpowers her, and the orchestration draaaaags. This duet works better with vitality, nerves, not a slow, paced execution.
Friedman is unique. I can't think of a singer that has the natural ability to be shrill in EVERY register...... Still, distract them by staring strangely into the middle distance....
Yet she is performing at the Proms and you spend your time posting nasty remarks on other people's work. Let us know where you're performing, in the meantime.
when i lisen to this song I CANNOT watch the video becuase it is soooooo awkward witth that age gap and the man is clearly uncomfortable!! But their voices are lovely!
Friedman is a star....always has been always will be!
what I'd give to sound like Julian. Everyhting he does is wonderful!
Never mind appearances, the voices are great and worthy of Sondheim's greatness.
Ovenden's voice in this is superb. Also, this is a concert performance, not an actual production of Follies, the age difference is irrelevant.
Julian Ovenden so marvelous, as always.
He does have a wonderful voice!
WHy are people complaining about the hug? If he's playing Ben, he's not supposed to be all that into her. Doesn't anyone know the show?
You guys are nuts. the hug was great.
Friedman is wonderful, as always.
A heartbreaking duet. I love your eyes Ben.
Can we just talk about Julian Ovenden's voice? It is spectacular!
@Judill Your remarks reveal more about you than the performance

@cpoppins I am not surprised that she messed up, given the pressure. I have worked in live theater for over twenty years and experienced much worse...
What an adorable HUNK

For the masses, its perfect!
anyone notice 2:39 ? ouch!
The one with Audra McDonald is better but vocally this one is good as well
What's with the mike? Bad, bad...
ALL TWADDLE..........................
@Judill LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
first ruthie henshall and now maria friedman? damn julian loves an age gap lol
The voices are wonderful for radio listening, but the visual makes me feel like he's cuddling up w/his mother. Sorry - Audra MacDonald and Nathan Gunn is the one!
Listen to George Hearn and Barbara Cook
Totally agree - Audra and Nathan are THE one!!

It's a Concert!
Out of context like this, it works completely - and they sing the ass of it!
😎😎😎
It's a concert, not a theatre production. Sung beautifully by both. Some of us can actually appreciate that

AHHH Julian Ovenden is INCREDIBLE!!! To bad the same can't be said about Friedman here....

horrendous performance.......no idea of the book or music.
Stereotypes? The song has context and having a young man sing it is totally silly and this version is so overdone.
Been a lot of concerts that feature Follies music, have you???
😜
not at all
