I don't know why the title says "Eric Clapton cream" but there were THREE members of cream. The phenomenal drummer Ginger Baker and the awesome bass player and vocalist Jack Bruce.
Yes, ironic, isn't it...? Seeing now that he's the only member still alive....
I always thought of Cream as Jack and Ginger's band with Eric guesting on guitar.
With the level of cringiness on that video (all the Ill, Im, Ive, Its and the embarassing attempt to put the guitar riff into words), I'm not at all surprised by the cringy video title.
Ginger Baker was completely unique. A force of nature, as befits his moniker.
Because in a commercial sense Eric Clapton is the name most known by the average music fan. Yes, Bruce and Baker are just as proficient as Clapton on their instruments and legends as well. Still, ask most people and they won't know the names Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker but they will definitely know the name Eric Clapton.
No missing that iconic opening riff. Cream was short lived but has a big place in rock history.

It's also one of the 4-5 songs that guitarists back in my day, first learned. Smoke on the Water was #1. Hey Joe was up there too....
Could is the operative word -- and I have every faith that...with enough dedication...Lex actually COULD play that riff...if she wanted it hard enough.
The riff is pretty easy. The solos might take a little more work, but who's going to play drums like that?

Brad was spot on in his assessment that this was ahead of it’s time. Cream pretty much set the music world on fire with their short burst of creative output between 1966-1968.
The world had heard nothing like this before; the tones and compositions, most certainly serving as a major influence on a young and upcoming Black Sabbath, who debuted in 1970, hot on the heels of Cream’s disbandment.

Don't completely agree. Cream was a great group indeed, however, their sound was certainly heavily influenced by Hendrix and the Experience. Even though Cream formed shortly after the Experience Clapton like most other key figures in the British music scene had heard Jimi play live in London throughout 1966. They knew him well by that point, and as stated, Jimi was really the one who invented this heavy, distorted sound.

Most people don’t notice but the vocals are split between the bass player, and then Guitar Player (Eric Clapton).
It’s singing alternative verses. It gives the vocals more texture.

i just came to say this, to see if Brad and Lex noticed. Very subtle and i admit ive had Cream albums for many years and only just now after all this time noticed Eric Clapton slip in a couple of lines between Jack Bruces.
Wtf how can you not notice both singers. One guy is a legit singer & the other guy (Clapton) sounds like someone they just pulled off the street. Plus they both sing together in some parts.

Brad is right. Cream was a power trio that brought an all new sound and energy to that era. Definitely one of the top bands of the late 60s that included a plethora of Hall of Fame bands. Each member was at the top of their craft when the band formed-hence the name “Cream”
This is the first riff that my daughter learned how to play when she first started playing guitar, no doubt you'll be able to learn it , Lex👍

Cream was a huge influence on ALL the heavy rock bands that came after.
Cream really were ahead of their time. As all three were already known musicians, they were the very first "supergroup" -- a term that was originally coined to describe them. And they made a huge mark, despite the short time they were together.
Yes, it was ahead of its time, that was 1967 and the Summer of Love. Sabbath was influenced by Cream I'm sure, Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience had a profound effect on hard rock for sure.
Cream was awesome both in studio or live, they would use their songs as starting points for imrov hard rock and blues, even a little jazz, jams that were ground breaking. Try the live version of Spoonful and see what I mean. Enjoy. 🎸

These 3 guys created some of the best music in rock history which considering they only existed a few short years and two of them couldn't stand each other was some achievement

This was THE song on AM radio in late '67 along with Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses & SWLABR off the Disraeli Gears LP -- if the radio station was trying to be all psychedelic and progressive. We were migrating over to early FM around that time.

I first heard Sunshine of Your Love in 1967 and the first time I heard this Cream song was a new sound to me, 3 piece power rock band with Eric Clapton on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass, two vocal harmony and Ginger Baker on drums. Cream had a good run from 1966-1968 and wished they could have taken the band further. Thank you for sharing! - Bob

Such a HUGE change from 1964. This rock music is for adults, not for teens. It's experimental and it conveys feelings. It's not specifically for dancing.
Good reaction and observations guys! Yes, this is basically a blues progression, dressed up with a catchy riff, and played LOUD! This was at the beginnings of LOUD rock, 1967. Hendrix was hitting at the same time, and this music would eventually morph into Black Sabbath (and many others!) in a year or two. Lex, that riff is simple…but as BB King once said, “Simple don’t mean easy!” 😁👍🎸
Yes these were the Cream of the musicians working in the early 1960s when we were teenagers. Eric Clapton lead guitar and some vocals was coming out of the the very popular John Mayall's Blues Band and the Yardbirds, who were hard -working bands . Jack Bruce on bass was classically trained and was also a fearsome lead vocalist. He was in Manfred Mann for a short time too. Ginger Baker was coming out of jazz and blues and no one could touch any of them as musicians until Hendrix popped up on the scene.They blew the doors off!Every little teenage garage band got into this riff back then and got as big a set of amps as they could afford. My friends had a little blues band playing this at a few gigs.This was inspiring stuff. for budding musicians and it was new!.. it set off heavy rock but no bands had this kind of finesse and musicianship.....just three great albums and some amazing concerts until they went their separate ways which is another three stories right there ...each one of them had a great catalogue but only Clapton survives.There was a massive final concert and then many years later a reunion concert in 2005 th-cam.com/video/cYYeM_t6b5c/w-d-xo.html..both worth getting into .

"Ahead of it's time" ... "sounds like the 70s" ... the distorted "power chord" was discovered by the Kinks (1964), then perfected by Cream, the Who, and Hendrix (1967)... Followed two years later by Zeppelin and Sabbath (1969) ... then the rest of the 70s Classic Rock.
Blue Cheer was also one of the 1st also, but much less well known.

Yes Lex, you could play this riff. It's a very easy riff, and one of the first "real" riffs a lot of people learn. (I learned it on a LONG acid trip one night ;) )
SO popular and easy to play that many guitar stores totally prohibit anyone from playing it in the store. Seriously. They'll literally kick you out for playing it. Also Freebird and Stairway to Heaven and a few more.

This riff is written by Jack Bruce, the phenomenal fretless bass player after seeing Jimi Hendrix in a club in London before he was big in the States. Yes, Jimi Hendrix had to be premiered in America after killing it in London while unassumingly putting Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend in his crossfire. Paul McCartney said that he and Eric Clapton went to see Jimi but didn't want to be seen. Not only did Jimi Hendrix play the song, 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', as it had just been released days earlier, he asked if Eric Clapton would be able to come up and re-tune his guitar! I believe they were spotted. Yes, this riff is iconic and everyone's first to learn whether a bass player or guitar player while introducing off-notes with down-beat notes. Jimi did a great instrumental of this song at Winterland in San Francisco upon hearing of their break-up. Thanks again!
I remember this song coming out about the same time as Hendrix's Purple Haze. Bot so different from what was being played before. Greatly influenced my musical interests as well as those of many others.

High school and college bands have been playing this at football games since at least the early 80's.
The vibrato sound on the main theme was done with finger of the guitar player making the string bend back and forth. This was revolutionary at the time. It became a standard technique from then after.

Jack Bruce....bass & vocals,they were all stars,but Jack Bruce never got a look in sandwiched between Clapton & Ginger Baker.....his solo stuff was awesome.....I'm recommending his solo track No Surrender,cool track,used to listen to it before I took to the Rugby field,motivational!

That WAS a good take, Brad. Cream pretty much redrew the map, introduced the supergroup, even if the term got thrown around more for the follow-up band, Blind Faith, with Eric and Ginger from Cream and Stevie Winwood from Spencer Davis Group, plus Rick Grech on bass.
But the simplicity, directness, the blues with a twist structure, virtuoso playing and undeniable power and passion, conviction and innovation. ..this was the state of the art until someone...the Beatles, Hendrix, or Cream themselves blew everyone's doors off on Wednesday. Always loved that Clapton starts his iconic solo with a melodic quote from 'Blue Moon'. And the drums are unlike anything or anyone else. Hey, who TF ARE you guys?!!

Cream was the first super group. I love gingers Rock bottom drumming and the blending is Jack and Eric's voices and of course the guitar and bass are impeccable and yes it is pretty easy to play on guitar
One of the songs famously covered by Jimi Hendrix when he got bored of playing the same stuff. Did a version on a TV show if I recall. Just stopped playing his own song after a few bars and basically said "forget this boring music, check this out!".
Also, legend has it he played Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band a couple of days after it came out. While McCartney was in the audience no less.

Other than the Beatles, this was the first 'grownup' song I remember liking as a tot, maybe 4 y/o. The lead solo on this is the melody for an old standard named 'Blue Moon'.

1967, aged 16, and I went to the local record store to buy a 7 inch 45rpm vinyl single of Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. And I took it back ! NOT because it was no good. Oh no, it was, and still is , phenomenal. (it skipped a few grooves half-way through the record) Of course , they replaced it ,and i have played it ever since

Cream was sooo deep in the blues. Eric Clapton was such an amazing guitarist that there were signs posted throughout England that said Clapton is God. You may have heard this song if you saw the Vietnam movie Apocalypse Now. If you haven't you sound check that movie out as well especially with surround sound!

Cream are brilliant. I took my Dad to see The Sound of Cream for his birthday a few years back as he missed out seeing the original, which was a cover band made up or Jacks son, Gingers son and Eric’s nephew. I think the best Cream song is White Room in case you’ve not done it.
This was one of Creams biggest hits, Eric Clapton is known as “slow hand” not as easy hand. I will just say what sounds simple might very well surprise you, on how easy it is to achieve……. Lex I’m sure you will spend a great deal of time perfecting this riff‼️🍻🍻

The first few notes let you know this song is going to be a classic. Anything with Eric Clapton will be blues based track, that's where he comes from. When you think of Classic Rock, this song is what you will think of.
