- Hi and thanks for watching. This video covers the most likely issues with a standard Whirlpool-style dryer, that cause it not to heat and dry your clothes. If you're getting heat but things are still damp, you may have air flow issues in the dryer or in the venting, so check that as well.
We will check the hi limit thermostat, operating thermostat, cycling thermostat, timer, and other general issues common to Whirlpool dryers not heating.

Due to lots of comments about the thermal fuse, the following note will be pinned to the top to help folks. The thermal fuse on electric dryers is not on the heat circuit; it is on the drive circuit. This means that if the thermal fuse is bad, the dryer won't start at all. We have another video on electric dryers that don't start. Good luck!

Just fixed. my dryer. Based on your video analysis I determined it was the timer. Instead of buying a new timer I saw someone in the comments mentioned that the contacts might need to be cleaned. So I took the timer apart and noticed that when I spun the dial one set of contacts were not touching. So I gently bent the copper contact so it would touch at the appropriate spot of the dial spin and the dryer was back in business. Plus I super cleaned it when I did my evaluations and Nnow it works like new. I WIN!!! Thanks for the good video.

Best, most helpful comment on this thread! I wish you could upload pics also so folks could see the contacts. But I took the timer apart, and sure enough, the copper lead from the same exact problem lead (red wire) in this self-help video was slightly corroded! It was kind of flaky and gummy! So anyway, I cleaned and scraped the contact pellets on each of the leads in the timer and WAH-LAH! It gave continuity! Put everything back together, and HEAT!!! So thank you, this repair costed me nothing but about 1.5 hour of time disassembling, checking continuity of items from this video, cleaning the timer lead pellets, and putting it back together! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! TH-cam is an awesome tool!

I bought all the fuses and everything and new heating element plugged it in hoping for heat and still no heat so after me working on appliances a little bit in the past I figured the last thing it would be is a timer it's a 2002 model roper so I mean obviously it's got age on it so I'm going to check it to confirm or not confirm. I can't thank you enough for this video! Our dryer was spinning fine but stopped drying and heating up a MONTH after warranty expired! I was was like "Aww... F*#^!!!" I had absolutely NO IDEA what was inside that thing! I was was looking at a $200.00 service call (just for the VISIT!)
Turned out the wire to the heating element crimp connector was bad. I took it off, cleaned the wire, put on a new crimp connector, and was done in an hour and a half. (And 45 minutes of that was spent going to Lowes to pick up the crimp connector and some electrical tape!
All said and done, I fixed my dryer (something I NEVER thought I could do) for less than $15.00

Watched this video and took my multimeter over to find out it was a $17 thermostat. I let her buy my lunch. (Burger no fries or drink)

Switched a gas stove to 220v by capping gas line and running new power from panel.
Replaced breakers in two houses.
And removed half dozen sebaceous cysts from my body.
Currently watching videos on molar extractions. (Might leave that to the pros though)

Brother i owe you a big one!!! My dryer has been killing a heating element ever 11 to 14 months but this time it was the safety thermostat. I took the lint shoot off and it was almost completely stopped up coming out if the drum and from there to my outside exhaust was matted about an inch thick. I praise god it quit when it did and the safety worked as designed cause i was headed for a house fire. Thanks man. YOU SAVE MY HOUSE AND MY FAMILY!! I did exactly as he instructed and it worked just like he said it would. The part cost me $11 on amazon, took 2 days for it to arrive and 15 minutes to install and test. I got heat immediately. I appreciate this guy.

We have a whirlpool electric dryer. I am certified in hvac, and I also worked electrical maintenance in heavy industry. I was leery about taking the dryer apart to troubleshoot everything. Your video is very helpful since I never did much work on appliances. Thank you for the procedure and explaining each component's function. You helped me a lot here. I'm retired and recently lost my motivation to do this kind of work. I got bitched out tonight since I've been letting this go. The machine heats but the heating is poor. First thing I'll check is for lint build up. Like I said the machine does dry, but the clothes are damp sometime at the end of the cycle. Might bet on lint build up..

These older mechanical dryers are really the best ones in my opinion you can easily fix them yourself and they last longer
With your very clear step by step approach we were able to test and determine that the thermostat was bad. Ran to the parts store, bought the kit and replaced both thermostats. You saved us hundreds on repair or replacement. Thank you so much!!
I just want to say THANK YOU for this video!! I had no idea what I was doing but after watching this, I went and bought a meter and figured out that it was the top thermostat and had it fixed in 30 min. I probably paid to much at $35 here in town rather than the internet for the part but I'm a family of 6 and can't wait around for parts to come in the mail. My dryer was only 26 months old so it was really frustrating but I saved a ton of money because of this video. Thank you!!

This is what happened to our dryer. I borrowed a multi-meter, followed your instructions. My test showed that the timer switch was faulty. I bought a new one and installed it. Dryer now works like new! Thank you so much for this video! You saved me a bunch of cash.
Thank you so much @Byrd appliances! I am a DIYer but had no idea how to diagnose and fix my dryer. When I got to the timer and discovered an open circuit I was so relieved. After I replaced it and tested the dryer....HEAT! I am thrilled. Thank you again. Saved me $150 on a service call, or a new $600-700 dryer.
Thanks for the video. I just found the same issue, all my sensors and coil checked out, still no heat. Used this video to trace it to the timer. Pulled the timer out, and discovered, you can pull it apart. Remove the two screws holding the winder clock in place and carefully pull it and the cover plate off. You now have access to the contacts. I used a small jewelers file, much like an old school points file. An emery fine emery board would be ideal. I found one really worn contact, and another from a lesser used setting that was also not making heat. Cleaned them up, blew out the metal filings and put it back together. It's working again.
Mine is a Whirpool WED5200VQ1 model for reference. My timer unit looks very similar to the one in the video. Thanks Byrd Appliance for the help. I understand you can't open a part and show how to repair for liability reasons.
File those contacts at your own risk, and blow out those filings, even with just a puff a breath, and don't fret. These worn contacts can be refurbished. Worth a try before a $80-$100 timer part change in my garage anyway. Still testing, verdict not out, but those contacts are now much cleaner and making contact and my dryer has heat again.
Mine is a Whirpool WED4800XP0. The timer and connections looked just like the one in this video. My red wire contact had no continuity just like this video! I took mine apart also (careful to take pictures of everything when you take it apart in case something drops out). Very easy. Sure enough, the little pellet contact for the red wire was slightly corroded and gummed up! I cleaned it with an emery board and scraped it a bit with a utility knife. Checked continuity, and it was working again! Put it all back together and now it has HEAT!!! This video and your (and others) comments about disassembling the timer are GOLD! Should save a lot of folks a lot of money on either service calls or a brand new dryer! Thanks for posting your experience!
Fantastic video! I never would have thought the timer was the issue, but sure enough it was. To better confirm the diagnosis, while measuring the resistance across the timer terminals, I moved the knob forwards and backwards until I caught a section of the rotation that was conducting across the terminals. In that position, I reconnected, fired up the dryer and sure enough heat worked - and as soon as I rotated the knob (still in heat cycle) the heat turned off. For this kind of intermittent heating issue, I'd suggest rotating the dial through the cycle while testing the continuity to be sure the timer is truly OK.

Mine was the upper thermostat. I fixed my own, thanks for this video, I fixed my drier for 14.75.
This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
A Thousand Thank Yous! I( suspected it was my timer, because the problem initially affected the 'High Heat - Timed Dry' area of the dial, then it stopped heating altogether. Took me 5 minutes to pull off the back, and another 5 to diagnose in the exact same order as the video. I ordered a replacement from Amazon for $60. Installed it in two minutes, and am now good to go. Such a relief that I don't have to pay for a new dryer or a repair visit. THANK YOU!!
Of all the videos that I have looked at. Yours is the only one to check the switch on the timer to the heater. I had run out of options until I found your video. Thanks a bunch. I took the timing switch apart and found the point for the A terminal had been arcing. There were arc marks inside the plastic case for the timer.
Saved me a service call and probably a new dryer. Tested with volt meter, the high limit was out, replaced and immediately worked. Thank you!!
After buying the heating element, thermal fuse, both thermostats and still not working...I was at my wits end. Saw this video and went and got me a multi meter and sure enough, my old parts were good! And my new ones as well (obviously) but it was the timer! Thanks for the video!

In this video, the best thing to note, is that breakers can fail (half aside at a time), so if your unit is only seeing half the voltage, it will only perform half of the job.. Like spinning, but not drying. Always make sure your breaker box is up to par, before you go throwing parts and time at an appliance repair. Otherwise you could be running in circles from the start, if an old circuit breaker, proves to be the issue.
I'll make sure that I have a solid 240 volt output on it. I have a 240 volt light bulb that I could use for this test.

Glad I found this video. This is one of the very few that mentions the timer. I unplugged the wires and tested it and it said the switch was ok. I was frustrated because I had tried everything else. For the hell of it I plugged the timer back in and tested it and it worked! Maybe the plug had just become a bit too loose from many years of shaking?

I would find this video even better is the hand didn't block what what the multi-meter prongs were contacting. Thx! My timer arced at high heat connections so I replaced it and I also replaced the high heat thermal fuse. Before I plugged the dryer up, I watched your video and saw that I had connected the high heat thermal fuse wires backwards. Thx to this video I realized this and reconnected correctly hoping to avoid burning that fuse out again.

Thanks for the vid! I'm an appliance repair apprentice,and these vids are extremely useful! Another trick to getting those nasty plugs/connectors out, is to poke something small/round into the small hole on that connector..they come out extremely easy once you do that. Works every time

I started by changing the little parts in the back and the thermal fuse, dryer didn’t work till I changed the stuff on the gas valve.
This guy make it look really easy.
My concern was getting the belt back on, so far so good, hasn’t slipped off yet.

TIM great job Thank you I have a whirlpool did the check you showed and it is a bad heating element, when i removed it you can visibly see the broken coils so for $34 i saved over $350! Thank you man!
Thanks for posting! Was able to narrow it down to the timer. I just happened to have kept all the usable parts off another dryer that was very similar, so I used the timer from that one and got mine going again. It wasn't EXACTLY the same, but nothing a little splicing and a couple of incantations couldn't fix. Thanks again! Good video!

My wife told me that the auto dry wasn’t advancing. However, the timer was advancing on the other timer modes, but there was no heat at any setting. It turns out the thermal fuse was blown. Once that was replaced, the dryer had heat but the auto dry still did not work properly until the cycling thermostat was replaced. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for a thorough video. The little demo on the power supply was what I needed because all the sensors checked perfect as well as the timer. I thought the pigtail had gone bad, but it turned out to be one of the mounting screws (black one) holding the pigtail to the connecting plate had lost connection - loose, I guess. Meter showed no power there but full power at the outlet. I would not have considered it if not for your video.

Thanks, straight to the point, with no BS like removing scews. Tuns out I evidently had a trifecta, with one leg of the breaker not having power, the upper limit thermostat out, and the lower thermostat fried to the point the terminal broke off. Reset the breaker, replaced the parts, cleaned of some dust, and the now working fine.

We were about to agree on getting a new dryer when I watched this video. Since it was intermittent, I didn’t bother checking for open heating elements. I played with the timer position while the dryer was running, I heard a slight extra noise, a very faint sound that was likely the element expanding from heating. Sure enough, the dryer started getting hot again. I will probably need to replace the timer. The intermittent proper operation was likely when we placed the timer in a manner to make proper contact and start the heating process. Some issues may not be easy as this one.

I was able to find out that my high temp thermostat was faulting out. (No Continuity) well I’m glad I replaced the thermostat and the heating element like you said. Thanks for sharing. Just bought a new Timer switch and that fixed my Dryer after testing all the other parts you show to test ,thanks to this video. I even have a multi meter from harbor freight I got years ago for free (when they had free things).

On mine the thermal fuse went and the dryer wouldn't start or Anything. 3 days after that the heat completely stopped which is why I'm writing to say thank you for such a good thorough instructive video and I'll be going through these steps tomorrow. Thanks! I was able to figure out my heat sensor was bad from this video. I had changed out my heating element after it broke only for it to not work long and it quit heating again. I did the tests and was so glad to find it was an easy fix

Mine had a scarf shread up and must've created enough lint to keep it from heating up. The lint filter keeps filling up every couple minutes. So I had to take a peek at how this type of unit with the top filter is accessed. Thanks for the vid.

Awesome video! Helped me identify a bad heating element in my mom's Whirlpool dryer - all the thermostats and the timer switch was good, but wasnt getting continuity on the heating element terminals. Opened it up, and sure enough the the wire in the heating coil had broken. Thanks for the help!

this video is very helpful. I didn't know that the heating element would register higher resistance than baseline. other videos said that continuity required ohm reading to be close 0 (or baseline). you saved me $90 dollars!

You saved my butt...I think. I was following your video with a voltage meter. And happened to find some loose screws around where the power cord attaches to the machine. I tightened them up. Then I checked the breaker box and found a tripped breaker. I left the back off, plugged it in, and started it. The element glowed bright orange. So, I'm guessing it was was loose wires and a tripped breaker. Going to run a load of launder and check it out. Thank you.
Great video. I have a whirlpool that dies during a cycle. Even though the breaker doesn't pop, manually resetting it is the only thing that works on getting the dryer working again. It does get heat though.

The centrifugal switch in the motor can easily be tested from the back. That red wire that's stuck at 4:30 comes from the switch at the motor. If you have 120 to ground from that red wire while the motor is running, then the switch is closing properly. Live testing involved so use caution ✌🏼
Can you explain this a bit more? Everything part mentioned tests good on mine, but still no heat.

@@ericschulze5641 Yes, I did. It took me awhile to notice, but where the power cord wires attach to the rear of the dryer, one of the connections was all burnt out. There was another problem with the dryer shaking, and I think it had loosened one of the dryer plug cord connectors causing it to spark. Replacing the whole thing the power cord was attached to seemed complicated (along with fixing the shaking), so I replaced the dryer.
@apizer I'm guessing yours was a GE due to the fact you said it was shaking, probably not worth repair, the cord issue is super common, as a technician the FIRST thing I check is for 220 volts the SECOND thing I check is for burned wires at the power cord, it's extremely common and not from vibration, it's from inexperienced installers ,& could take years to burn off, those screws have to be really tight, almost tight enough to break the terminal block, thank you for responding, PS I ALWAYS check the cord on any dryer or range after repair so if there's a fire I don't get blamed for it
Thank you for the video! My dryer wasn't heating but everything else worked. all the fuses passed and the element appeared good. in your video you said something about checking the outlet volts that if the volts were off it might run but not heat. I hadn't checked that since I knew I had power. Sure enough the dryer had two breakers and only one had been flipped. Put everything back together and it works again!
