He's turning 13 in a couple months and it's really hard not being able to see him everyday like I used to. I LOVE that little fella, but as a dog owner/lover you can't help but think of the day when he'll no longer be here.

My golden passed back home while I was in college. Strangely I feel more guilt about not being there for her than for anything else in my life. I've lived a principled life I guess.
I don't know what I could've done differently. I was broke and trying to get out of it. I thought I had more time.
I drove back home to bury her myself. I buried her in her blanket and with her latest favorite toy.
I haven't owned another dog since. Until I can be unquestionably there for a pet, I won't have one. I just watch videos all the time.

"It's amazing that our totally different lives overlapped!" ...what a beautiful quote! 😍🐾
Talking about beautiful... we love all the details in this video (Thor in the intro, wiggling labs on the chart and all the paws on the lifespan curve) and the "How to help your dog not die" chapter at 7:18 . In our film studio, there are always furry friends around, who wiggle around the office. Dogs are just great company, no matter if at home or at work!
Let's make their life as long as possible!

Once I head that the reason we become so attached to our dogs, sometimes more than to humans is because with humans it always gets messy, but with dogs there is only love. And I do believe that. I'm on my third dog that I'm taking care of since he was a puppy and I've love them all so, so much, but in such different ways, they all had such different personalities and I'll forever be thankful for each and everyone of them. My current pupper is at least 50% of my mental stability. :D So yeah, we don't deserve dogs, but only a fool would give them back

its actually just classic enabling. dogs don't understand complex emotions like love. they are pack animals. its typically depressed individuals that gravitate towards comfort dogs rather than work/herding/tool dogs. easily explainable, difficult to swallow.

My parents got me a dog when they adopted me at 3 months old and it lived till I was 32 he was a Heinz 57 and stayed outside his whole life and got table scraps all the time. my parents would get so mad at him for chasing the chickens around, so my dad did this twice, he drove the dog between 30 and 40 miles away and let him go, the next morning he would always be right there on the deck waiting for me, was the most loyal animal I ever had.

Why did I jot think I that I was gonna finish this video with tears in my eyes?
Only adopted my baby a few months ago, she's about 1yo now. Never thought about it when choosing her, but she is tiny and at that time I looked for a small dog to hopefully be easier to relocate to another continent, and maje her happier living with me in a small apartment, but knowing that smaller breeds live longer makes me feel better because I can't imagine losing her.
We have another dog in the family who just turned 10, and for tge past couple of years he started looking older and older very quickly. It's hard seeing that because it's a constant reminder that we don't have our whole lives with him and it's heartbreaking. We just had to say goodbye to an older dog(~20 we don't know for sure) two years ago and I went through tge worst time of my life at that time, he was like my child and helped me learn so much. We adopted him 2 years prior and he was already old so we didn't know how long he has but gladly we got to spend a couple of years with him and although the last half year was hard because he got very sick and old very fast, I'm happy we had him and wish I had him the entire 20 years.. Its truly heartbreaking that dogs live so much shorter lifes than us💔😢

My dog is turning 13, And I was starting to think about that. About how hard i'ts going to be when she'll leave to doggy heaven. And I realized that if dogs lived longer lives, like 20+ The separation would be even more difficult, making it unbearable. So in a strange way, I wouldn't change the longevity. I just enjoy every single moment I can with her and prepare myself that my trip will be longer without her. 🐕

The other way to think about it is how slow humans age as infants. Most animals are up and running within minuets to weeks at most, humans take months to years. I know puppies can be a pain at times, but I would not mind having to put up with a puppy for 2+ years if they lived twice as long as they currently do.

Whenever discussing living longer in a purposely result driven way (rather than a side effect of good nutrition and medicine, for example) I always wonder "should" we?
Humans living a long time means a king or dictator can live longer. Billionaires who control markets won't die as soon. You will need to work longer.
Pets living longer means... What? They don't specifically want to live longer. So it's a very human centric, possibly self centered goal to have
And yes my profile picture is of a cat. I cried when my roommate's cat passed away. I adopted one briefly before having to move in with roommates with allergies. If pets naturally lived as long as we did I wouldn't suddenly advocate pets have their lifespan genetically shortened.
Just not sure what the consequences are of this idea

Yes! I thought the same thing. We can dedicate ourselves to create technologies that will make pets live longer, sure, but should we be interfering in their lives in that manner? Should we fundamentally alter their lives even further just because we don't want to suffer from their passing? Isn't that, the fact that they die before we do, important for us to learn about death? To accept it?

Being a dictator is an inherently unstable position. Imagine dictators the have to manage people with fifty more years of experience and wisdom. Yeah unlikely.

I can count the number of months on two hands that I was not around at least one dog. My first dog was Brandy, a white mix collie. We had to put her down when I was really young. We then got Skippy, which we had to put down when I was just getting out of college. My then Girlfriend, now wife, had a Lhasa Apso mix. We had to put her down about 6 years ago. About a month later, we have our Shihtzu/Poodle mix. A couple years ago, we bought a German Shepard, and both of them get along very well. It's entertaining to see when the Poodle tells the Shepard off. :)
I love dogs, always will love 'em, and I can't think of a day when I'll consider not having at least one. They're fantastic animals. These two I have now are such sucks and so ultimately loyal. It's amazing.

The Great Trap and the Great Reward
The Great Trap is that to be a good pet owner, you must be willing to give totally of yourself, unconditionally, yet knowing that you will have them for a relatively short time.
The Great Reward is that you had them most, if not all, of their lives and that in the end, you were there letting them know that they are, and forever will be, loved.

My precious boy is almost 5yrs old, and I didn't realize that bigger dogs have such a shorter life span until after we adopted him.😔 He is half Saint Bernard, 1/4 Great Pyrenees and 1/4 Mountain Dog. All three are giant breeds.🥴 I just hope that we can love him into living past his life expectancy! 🤞💕

Please don't forget the Dog Aging Project at UWashington, which is enrolling pets now. Professor Kaeberlein would be a great interview for rapamycin, which improves dog heart function and is being tested to prevent aging

It’s also interesting how pure bred large dogs seem to age quicker than mix breeds. My Labrador will live forever though so it’s all good

"It seems cruel that we live so much longer than our best friends." For me, i view it the other way. Because as long as I am still alive, I can rest easy knowing my best friends (in the case of mine, it's 10 cats) are guaranteed to be taken care in good hands which are my family.

My dog is really old...I've had him 13 years, but he was approx 2-4yrs old when I i got him. I'm glad he's able to live to old age because I've had pets die before their time of cancer and illnesses before. And he's small so he might have a few more years left if I'm lucky. But it's still hard seeing him aging so fast.

I realised it had to be curved at the dog park - most of the dogs are near full grown by the time they're a year old, so I figured they're at least in their human late teens. By the time they're 2.5-3 they've filled out and become calmer adults, equivalent to us going into 40s. I was off by a fair bit, looking at the epigenetic trial chart!

My Poodle girl LOVED this video. She pawed me and poked me almost as if she wanted to me to make it come true. She loves to watch dogs on TV, but this one was surprisingly, clearly more important to her. How does she know? Sigh. She's 2.5 actual years old and should last 14 or more if we can avoid some killer disease. Lets hope that pill gets here soon.

I might be alone with that opinion, but for me, life being endless is a good thing. Things come and go, nothing is for eternity. It makes the time we have all the more precious and valuable. Give that I believe a god, I have a different perspective on eternity than others... I don't know... putting so much effort into dragging out the inevitable, when we should put more focus into using the time we have...

We have a friend with Great Danes and they are 12+ years old. The secret is diet of raw meat. Large dogs don't handle crappy diets. Currently I'm doing this with our pet cat. As a side note look into Dr Sinclair's work on aging. One of the key is triggering autophagy, which can be done with time restricted eating. Also restricted protein level per meal can down regulate mTor which also increases life span. One of the drugs in humans that looks promising is rapamycin (5mg per week) to slow aging since its a mTor inhibitor.
