  • We visited St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach Florida to check out a major beach renourishment project underway around the area by the Gulf pier. There is a huge mound of shells that we really wanted to see and it was well worth the visit! We were lucky to talk to an employee who explained the renourishment process, which is quite fascinating. Especially the shell conveyer belt! They pipe sand from a rig offshore through a submerged pipeline to the beach where machines sift out the shells, leaving only the sand. The most interesting sight to see is the mountain of shells in the parking lot. The shells are taken to a conveyer belt where they ride to the parking lot and are eventually put on a dump truck. The county will use the shells for roadways and other future public project reuse. A lot of people want to go through the shells and take them home, but unfortunately that is not an option.

I have a question. Law says you can’t take a living shell off the beach but yet they are killing all of them during construction?! Doesn’t seem right

The county took the shells. They wouldn’t let us look through them.
