  • Welcome back to the Beginner's Guide to Sewing! In the last episode of our series, we're moving on to bust adjustments. These are crucial to learn, but they are notoriously difficult to teach yourself. That's where we come in.
    In episode 20, we go over everything you need to know to do a full bust adjustment and small bust adjustment. We teach you how to do the measurements, calculations, and how to taper the adjustment to match the remaining pattern pieces. We've removed the guesswork so you can easily practice on your own patterns. Your clothing will fit better and look better on your body.

    The tutorial was so good but, beyond that, you are just a delightful human being. The highest compliment I could give any tutorial or podcast is that the host is 'palatable', because 95% are UNpalatable. You, my dear, are very much palatable. Love your videos, love your store - you make me want ALL THE FEET, and I barely sew. :)

    Thank you for this excellent tutorial, I was struggling with the fit of my home made clothes as I am only 5ft2in and a UK size 12/14 on the waist and hips but have a 32G bust I was opting for making a much larger size than I needed just to fit my bust into it then it was too big on the waist and hips, with this full bust adjustment I will be able to make my clothes fit properly everywhere!

    This was the clearest video on FBA I have found! Thank you so much! I've got a 10" difference between my under bust and full bust measurements, so almost every pattern I use I have to adjust. After having grading patterns up a size or two not work, I think this is just what I will have to start doing.

      Wasn't she amazing?! The highest compliment I can pay anyone doing a video or podcast is that they were 'palatable'. Next is that they're a good teacher (if it's a tutorial). Whatever entertaining or jazzy or cute is on top of that, is just a bonus. I did become a fan and I did subscribe! Fabulous. Thank you for teaching this so well. I put off sewing anything for myself with a top half because I didn't want all the muss and fuss over a FBA. Now it makes total sense. I also appreciated you showing how to use the curved ruler for a couple of different things. Thank you, Ms. Sewing Parts Online! XO

    Hi! Thanks for replying to my message so quickly. The pattern I am making the shirt/blouse from is a McCall's 2094 (1999). It's not just the shoulder seams that don't match up by the way, if I place the bodice pattern on top of the back pattern the side seams of the bodice stick out so much more than those of the back due to the increase in width resulting from the FBA and the larger dart. (Sorry I posted this reply more than once - didn't know where to put it - not done this sort of thing before).

  • @evelynr7069
    @evelynr7069 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yesterday you replied to my question (regarding getting a negative number with SBA adjustments with a larger waist) with another question. I answered that my numbers are 37.5 for High bust, 41 for full bust and 39 for waist. I would really appreciate hearing a response to this as well.

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Evelyn! I wanted to double check before I responded. The negative number makes your adjustment a bit more complicated. It has been suggested that you would better benefit from this method: www.sewalongs.com/hawthorn/hawthorn-full-and-small-bust-adjustments
      Or you can try to wing it and use the negative number as a starting point for your adjustment as outlined in our video. Good luck!

  • @danghouston
    @danghouston 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thank you for your video. The bust adjustment video was super!! but I have a question, when picking a size for blouse/dress patterns. I am a little confused (sorry) If my waist measurement fits a larger pattern size( large) than my bust measurement pattern size,(med) I should pick the pattern size that fits my waist and make a small bust adjustment? Or should I pick a pattern size closest to my waist measurement and do a large bust adjustment to the pattern?

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      angie g Hi! Pick the pattern size that fits your waist, then go from there. So, if your waist is a large, but your bust is a medium, you would do a small bust adjustment. I've had to do that a few times myself. Good Luck!

    • @evelynr7069
      @evelynr7069 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My measurements are almost exactly the same as Michelle C and I haven't seen any answer to her dilemma. She ended up with a negative .5 for a small bust adjustment. My H.B. is 37.5, my F.B. is 41 and my waist is 39. Since my waist is more than my H.B. it seems I should do a SBA, but the math comes out with a negative number. I thought your video was brilliant and would like to follow the info. Please reply to our dilemma.

    • @barbf8628
      @barbf8628 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm here with the same, if I went with the waist, the shoulders would be huge, because I'm an "H" shape. other blogger's advice has been to choose the high bust measurement and do an FBA. this seems more intuitive, and worked with the first time tried it.

    I know this is an old video but I'm hoping someone still reviews the comments. There is a mention that if your waist puts you in a larger size then you should go with that size to start and do a SBA. Ok, that sound reasonable because I've never had luck with FBA. Back / waist are always too tight using that method. So when I plug in my measurements into the SBA method, High+2-Full / 2 I come up with something that I can't work with. High is 38+2=40-Full of 41 40-41= negative 1 divided by 2 = negative .5 So, what should I do?

    I get your instructions. I calculated my FB 43.5” - UB 36” = 7.5” divided by 2 = 3.75” bust adjustment. You said to pick the pattern size based on your waist size which is 36”. Somehow, when I follow these instructions I almost nail it, but the top is too snug and that is without the darts being sewn in. Are my calculations wrong? I wear a 38DD bra size.

    Just curious as to why you are opening the side dart and adding unnecessary bulk to that area for a fba. If you close/rotate the side dart to vertical dart you can slash pattern from bust point to shoulder tip and increase pattern by 1/4 inch (per additional cup size needed) adding additional length to center front.

    Such an informative video! Really great job! Just one question/comment. If you have that dart at the waist for the SBA, why are you adding the fabric back on at the side? If you have a dart there, you aren’t actually losing anything from the width, the dart just gets smaller, but the waist will stay the same. I get it if there is no dart and you are doing an SBA, to add the fabric you are losing at the waist. Maybe i missed something.

    Why are these all for dart patterns??? I dont sew patterns with darts. But my bustline is always up near my dam collar bone i am super long from shoulder to bust apex but im short waisted and 160cms short. Am i meant to just lengthen the bodice of patterns then? Or still do a FBA but without darts? I wear and make loose tops but my full bust is too high and my waist on pattern is sitting under my bust 😢 why are these adjustments for these patterns only. I want to adjust a magyar sleeve/kimono type top bodice pattern without arm sleeves being even bigger.

    Hi Sarah, Just found this video and love love your energy and the specificity that you bring to this video.I have a question I hope you'll have time to answer. My waist measurement always brings me to a larger bust so I would need to do a SBA. I noticed you never mentioned the back bodice. It doesn't need any adjustments am I correct? Have you done a tutorial for both bust & waist adjustments? For example, what is the bust is 6 inches larger and the waist 5 inches larger. Would you then do a SBA & a waist adjustment? You would then need to include the back bodice and adjust waist there as well to distribute the 5 in reduction? Am I sort of on the right track?

      Thank you! We do not currently have a video for shoulder adjustments. I recommend exploring TH-cam for some great videos! Here is an example: th-cam.com/video/DXTklfkh2Fc/w-d-xo.html

    I know you said use your natural waist measurement, but I have love handles. Do I use the measurement from my love handles, which is larger than my natural waist? The piece I want to make is a snug bodice. My high bust is smaller than my full bust and my hips are larger than both. Thank you

    This was awesome. Now. My question.
    I have purchased a fabulous 60s dress pattern, but the pattern is a size 10 and my measurements are size 18 (39/32/42) how do I adjust a single pattern into my new size? Help!

      I am glad you enjoyed. I am sorry but I do not have information on the specifics of your project. I recommend checking for additional TH-cam videos on bust adjustments. This is the only one that we currently offer.

      Hi, Casey! Sew a muslin version using this method and tweak the fit while she is wearing the muslin.

    What if your pattern has no darts, and your bust is smaller than your waist. How is that adjustment made?

      There are extra steps that you will need to take to create a pattern with darts. I found a great blog that will help you step by step. helenscloset.ca/2017/03/21/how-to-do-a-full-bust-adjustment-without-any-darts/

    What if you have the large waist and do a small bust adjustment calculation as per instructions and come up with a negative number?
