The Best Dragon Ball Z Home Video Releases - DVD and Blu Ray

  • Funimation and Toei Animation have released so many home video versions of Dragon Ball Z from VHS tapes, DVD (including the dreaded orange bricks) and on Blu Ray with often mixed results. I recently picked up the complete collection on DVD that were released in Australia in the early 2000s, some of the Dragon Box Sets as well as the Blu Ray Level set (which is incomplete).
    I give my opinion on why I think these are the best releases we have had so far.
    I also explain why I prefer the original Funimation dub over DBZ Kai.

    Starting to believe that Toei and Funimation are doing this on purpose. Why would they ever release a perfect series when they can milk the franchise for a lifetime of releases?

    The Level sets are like the Ocean-Pioneer movies, a sad preview of what could have been.

    Right now, I'm only collecting the mangas but planning to buy the anime series on DVD or Bluray. Still can't decide between the Z or Kai releases though. I love how they kept Kai closer to the original material without the fillers but the soundtrack in the og Z series was so much better.

    • @unboxingthepast
      @unboxingthepast  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you're going to binge it then Kai is the way to go! I personally don't mind the slow pace of the original and some of the fillers are great imo 😅

      @b-rexandspidey ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@unboxingthepast That's the thing. Both Z and Kai are good so it's really hard to choose. With Z, yes, some of the fillers are great. I especially love the episode where Goku and Piccolo had to learn how to drive. Also, I grew up with the Shunsuke Kikuchi score so that is also a +1 reason for me. To be frank, I watched the whole series two times already. Once in Hungarian and once in German. But my wife also got interested in Dragon Ball so, yeah. That is why Dragon Ball Kai is also a good option, mostly for being shorter but still interesting for the newcomers to the series.

    If I'm remembering right, the single dvd releases are the only way we can watch the original Toonami dub as aired on TV in the late 90s/00s. Any further releases after that had all new dubs. Those are the ones I'm collecting and I have all the Dragon Boxes as well. The levels sets would have been a near perfect release. Too bad it was canceled.

    I have noticed that the dragon box does have a tiny crop on them compared to original/ levels making them a tiny bit wider than 4:3. If they finished the levels version that would have been an investment for the future even resale a 4K version of them (assuming their raw footage have greater resolutions).
    But unfortunately my favourite anime of all time is the messiest of all.
    Hopefully they still have the originals digitised somewhere and didn’t lose them because that would mean that at some point they will release a definitive edition by using AI; even the cost of production will be low.

    I own all 7 dragon box sets i got them pretty cheap for 50-75 for each box so i am very happy to own it.

      @@unboxingthepast well not just the music the original dub is better. when i was watching the dragon boxes i really started to notice that the sounds like screaming noises of pain was a bit different then in the first original dub and in the dragon box releases in a lot of short scenes a lot of sounds are missing.
      when it was released in my country and i rewactched dragon ball z four times on cartoon network and i never got tired of it i love dragon ball and dragon ball z.
      Unfortunately i dont own all the 2003 dvds yet because theyre quite expensive and hard to find in good condition but i will not stop until i have all of them. Dragon ball fan for life since i was 15 and i am 40 now.
      I'm not just collecting the dvds but i also own 2 vegeta statues: tsume majin vegeta and temple studio vegeta statue.
      I dont collect a lot of dragon ball figures i only collect the merchandise that matches the look of the characters and that are a nice collection item. I'd rather have something expensive and beautiful then a crappy figure that doesnt look like the character at all.

    You didn’t watched Kai because Bulma VA wasn’t there that’s nothing. Mexico Dub for Kai they got rid of Goku, Vegeta, Bulma and many of the main cast because they were asking for fair payment. They changed all the voices and Kai crashed and burned in Mexico because of the company decision. Latino is the best dub above any other so shows the power and nostalgia those actors imprinted on fans.
