How an Engine Works

- Here's how a car engine works to power your car!
The internal combustion engine converts gasoline fuel into rotational energy used by your car's transmission to power the wheels. Most vehicles situate the engine at the front of the vehicle and come in various configurations such as the "inline" "Boxer" and "V" cylinder arrangements.
In this video, a 3.5L VQ35DE Nissan Infiniti V6 engine from an Infiniti G35 is stripped down and taken apart piece by piece to explain what's inside and how it works. There are 5 main sections to a car engine, starting at the top with the valve covers, the engine head (with camshafts), the engine block (with pistons) the crank case (with crankshaft) and the oil pan. Here's a video on how the engine was removed from the vehicle:
• How to Remove a Car En...
The fuel-air mixture begins its path from the air intake into the intake manifold. More information on the air intake can be found here:
• How an Air Intake Syst...
The air makes its way into the combustion chamber as the piston is on its down stroke. As the piston moves up, the air-fuel mixture begins to compress as the valve timing closes the intake valves. The spark plug fires creating a small explosion in the cylinder, pushing the piston down creating a clockwise torque on the crankshaft due to its offset with the connecting rod. This process is repeated six times through each cylinder and its firing order is offset to reduce vibration and smoother engine torque output.
The tear-down procedure starts with removing all the engine accessories (such as the A/C compressor, alternator, power steering pump, cooling circuits and brackets). Next, the timing cover, engine oil pan and valve cover gaskets are removed to demonstrate role of valve timing on the top half of the engine. Once the head is removed, the pistons in the "V6" arrangement can be clearly demonstrated, followed by removal of the crank case and crank shaft with bearings.
For a 4 cylinder explanation, see a Toyota Corolla 1ZZ-FE engine being torn down here:

What a toothbrush you used in this video?
Haha! Don't use your brother's underwear! Super informative video! Great job!

I want that toothbrush. I don't have any real teeth left, but I want it.
Lets start an auction. I bid $10 for the toothbrush. In an "As is" condition.
I've learned so much more from a toothbrush since I found your channel than I did when I actually went to school for this stuff, haha
That’s pretty sad lol
Thats the reality...
What did you study?
Probably true

@@speedkar99 My i20 ignition coil pack has 2 high output terminals which is drive by 2 wires connector. However, one high terminal is giving less spark than the other. I checked for resistances too all ok in primary and secondary circuits. Why being controlled by same primary coil, less spark is produced in one terminal??
All the brother’s underwear, toothbrush, bed sheet, wife’s dress, etc. crack me the hell up hahaha. Besides that, your videos are the best ones that I’ve found to help me understand how cars work. So much information and easy to understand. Plus I really like how you demonstrate how certain things work right then and there. Keep doing what you’re doing! P.S. kudos for also never stuttering or saying “uh” or “um” like a lot of other people. 👌🏻
Thanks I'm glad you appreciate my work!
speedkar99 very much appreciated! Thank you for doing what you do 🙌🏻
Many years of engine mechanic's knowledge and experience in 17 minutes! Excellent!
Maybe Gunk should make some "oil wipes" out of woven cotton.
Im no mechanic and don't have experience but yeah it was quite alot of information in 17 min 😁
Im sure they have other wipes, these ones are best used for cleaning carbon/oil deposits than soaking up oil
Unbeatable, condensed and comprehensive. Instructive capacity shows genuine knowledge. Firsta class talent!
Thanks
Not only last time you used a 4 stoke engine to show how simple it is but also a different type of engine so our eyes can get used to it. DUDE ARE YOU A LOST UNIVERSATY GEM? WE NEED YOUUUUUUUUUUU.
I wish my mechanic teachers explained as good as you do. I'm a diagnostic technician and I still enjoy your videos. Even though I'm very well versed with engines or vehicle components for that matter. I think we take vehicle repair and parts for granted.
Agreed ! It's not easy to teach someone engines if they haven't had exposure.
What perfect timing. I just picked up a 2v 4.6 out of a 2000 mustang so that I could use it for teaching my 9yo how an engine works. I was going to use one of those visible v8 model kits, but I got the long block for $50. Bonus: I can sell the heads for $150 after we're done. Now this video will make a good theory lesson before we get to lab.
That's an awesome way to teach your kid, by actually feeling and touching the parts
goddamn I wish you were my dad

Another eye opener from you, thank you sir, am so impressed. Can't believe the water pump is buried down so deep within the block. If the water pump is busted, one might as well chuck the car to the wrecking yard.
Thanks for the kind feedback.
The water pump is accessible from the access cover.
I don't know how to do anything but change my oil. Your video and instruction was OUTSTANDING! I am a school teacher and recognize good instruction. You are very talented! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you found it helpful
level of dedication to teach us is unmatched. thanx alot sir.
You are welcome. I love doing this! So much fun learning and teaching.
You have no idea how much this is helping me understand more with my automotive classes
Hi. Now I understand why the number 10 socket is so valuable! You should keep all those bolt/fasteners, you will never have to go to the store and buy when you round them or have to hack one rusted off. This video shows how important doing an oil change on time is, it can literally save and prolong the life of the engine. 👍
Good point. I have boxes of bolts and fastners after taking apart this entire car!
@@speedkar99 Gotta watch out for those torque-to-yield fasteners, tho.
I love how you still explain how the gas exchange in a cylinder works even, I wasn't really sure lol, I am still learning and your channel is just amazing!
Glad you enjoyed it
This dude's vids are great. Snappy editing and informative, but with a bit of humor thrown in. Good stuff.
Thanks. That's my style 😏
Your videos are so helpful, I’m in tech school and sometimes it’s tough to understand some concepts, but you explain everything so clearly.
Glad you could learn and share with your classmates. What course are you taking?
speedkar99 it’s a one year program that covers all parts of the car and gets you ready for a job in a shop. It’s a lot of fun I get tools and everything and I get to work on actual cars.
Whats amazing is that you get straight to the point and give us the information...
Love your videos, informative and funny!
Thanks!

Your explanations on every subject to do with mechanical engineering is fantastic!!!
Great video yet again. Your explanation with graphical printouts in between the shots is awesome. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, im glad you like the style. A little bit of theroy with practical explaination
Very informative. Can you put it all back together again and show us how to do that !!!
I probably don't have patience for putting it back together haha!
The best teacher on YT thank you
Looking forward for the cleaning process and reinstall component to its start again. Thank you for sharing
Reinstall? Did you see the end of the video...im making a TV stand
You teach very well. Nice crash course. That looks like a well built engine. Probably when Nissan was not owned by Renault.
Thanks. As usual always interesting and entertaining.
Awesome thanks
Love your videos, will be great to see you reassemble an engine step by step.

I'm a trained reciprocating engine mechanic (Army - three schools) back in the day. Thanks for taking that Subaru engine apart - I enjoyed your delivery and knowledge. Is this one of the models that Experimental Airplane enthusiasts rebuild for use in their airplanes? John
Always something to learn on this channel:) Nice explanation on the four stroke cycle. Suck, squeeze, Bang and Blow.
Very true about the 4 stroke cycle 😲
Informative as usual. Thank you for posting. I saw something new in 13:44. Small nozzles pointing up to the cylinder wall. There is one bolt for two nozzles for two cylinders. They must be for squirting oil to the cylinder walls for lubrication. Interesting.
Yep those are oil jets. I'll be detailing those in my engine lubrication video coming up soon.
Thanks for the reply.
Your videos are very well made and very informative.

Lovely to see another great video made by you. Can you show us how mechanics source parts
Im not a mechanic but presumably they deal with a local jobber who buys it from a regional warehouse distributer who gets it from an overseas manufacturing partner
When I get bored I watch your videos, information with humor talk😅🤣
So im the "bored" channel now 🤢
Interesting video, it always amazes me that technology in this typical internal combustion engine.

Good video man, this made me want to become a mechanic, keep up the good work!!😁
Thanks except I'm an engineer
bro you make this look so easy lol, so sic,k thanks i learned a hell lot of stuff
Great vid as ever! I see that this engine is harder to work on than the jaguar x308. Actually I found my old ford Escort harder to work on that the XJ8 as there was zero room to manoeuvre
I wouldn't say this was difficult to work on, even if it was inside the vehicle...it was pretty straight forward but obviously not as simple as a four cylinder
Yet another awesome video!
Thank you!
Helpful video man
Thanks
What is the best way to keep track of all the screws/parts to put it back together correctly? Awesome channel.....Ahhhh at the end I saw the boxes and layout Thanks for all of that info

Is there any software which have this complete anatomy of engine
Im sure advanced software that OEMs use have simulation capabilities
Fun fact: The shim bucket (you called it tappet at 15:47) is the strongest most durable alloy metal part of an engine.
Shim bucket is what they call it?
Thank you for the informative content and taking the time to so thoroughly explain and walk through everything!! I love your channel!
How many miles you had on that VQ?
240,000km
Very cool video man very informative
Awesome glad you find it useful
Thanks a lot, that was an amazing explanation. 👍
You are welcome. It's a bit long but I had alot of compressing to do...raw footage was over an hour !
how hard it is to understand the mechanics of an automobile but more harder and complex to design an engine !
In this video at 8:10 you talked about the bearing cap I have the same engine and i believe it’s leaking pretty bad right at the bottom , is there an easier way to take this cap off and reseal it or is it the same process?
I think the manual describes a meeting to reseal without removing the timing side of the engine
Straight stuffs no big advert or grammar
That's my style thanks
Does that main chain tensioner (a long black plastic? thing) rub against the chain the whole time? How does that not wear down quickly, burn to a crisp and decrease fuel efficiency?
It's a harden plastic that's engineered to have good abrasive resistance despite at heat being brittle in bending.
Watching this video is making me want to build another vq35de.
Odd question would you happen to have the thickness of the back side of the crankshaft? I am asking about the part the rear main seal rides on. I have an engine that keeps having a main seal leak and want to try a speedi sleeve on it.
I don't have any specs but I could measure mine
@@speedkar99 if you have one easy access that would be awesome. If not I can measure mine one I drop the trans.
Hi, what is your opinion of this engine reliability? How hard is to change the water pump, while the engine is in the car? Thanks for the informative videos and good luck!
On the G35 the water pump is accessible from the front of the car, though a little cumbersome because it's chain driven. The VQ were reliable motors as long as you kept them full of oil!
The best channel ever!
Can the plastic valve cover break? Was it brittle due to the heat?
It can warp under heat. This one was pretty solid.
1:25 what is the role of that fan ? to move air around and cool down parts which are close to it ?
What are the chain guys made of? They appear to be plastic? 😮
Do you have a video on how to do a timing chain on a BMW x3 f25, N55 engine
No I've never opened a BMW
Hi there good evening from India
Good morning from Canada
Great video by the way I have a question for you is timing belt better than timing chain which one is better.
Uhmeizuhngralphaf05 an engine with a timing change is much better.
Chain lasts longer
My i20 ignition coil pack has 2 high output terminals which is drive by 2 wires connector. However, one high terminal is giving less spark than the other. Bravo speedkar99... This video like your previous one summarizing engine basics is a great resource for learners...I'm guessing that in a future video you might talk about some typical cylinder pressures and temperatures... thanks!
Thanks. The previous video was a 4 cylinder Corolla engine, this one is a Nissan v6. Many of the principles carry across.
I'll keep your suggestion in mind for future videos. Suggestions are always welcome.
Do you have a video tear down of the 6G72 Mitsubishi V6 3.0Liter engine?
The explosion pushes the piston down, but what is responsible for pushing the piston up? Where does the energy come from?
The crankshaft rotates and forces the connecting rod back up
The other cylinders are pushing down out of phase so they each cause the crankshaft to rotate pushing opposing cylinders back up.
great video! I wish I knew all this!
Thanks. Well with the video you now know. 😏
Great strip down. No better way to explain.
Agreed. It was good fun and learning at the same time.

Not that I could tell. The engine ran okay
Cant wait for that transmission teardown. Make it at least and hour long lel. Or maybe multiple parts.
