My son started when he was 7. He didnt like team sports. A customer who had a dojo in hawaii offered free classes and he found his calling in life. He now has his own dojo in orange county. Was on the usa karate team for I think 9 years. Was a coach and international judge. Now just doing his dojo. Yes, he did shotokan.

Since this video is a year old, I've now trained in Shotokan 6 times (+ 2 yrs) as long as you, and I've been around *lots* of karate players, and *lots* of bad attitudes, arrogance, and people sadly clueless about karate-do. You have a terrific attitude, it's really nice to see. You also have great body mechanics. Keep it up, and I think you and your videos are great ambassadors for Shotokan.

I think that people close their eyes when doing kata because they are trying to remember the kata they are about to perform.
Practicing frequently should help with the issue of closing the eyes.

Hi there, I too practice Shotokan Karate and have a question: In Kumite is it necessary to "hop" up and down all the time like many practitioners do and if so what is the meaning in doing it? I often don´t do that in Kumite fights because my legs get easily tired of that.

    • @KarateDojowaKu

There is no need for your to hop up and down. As long as you can react fast at anytime, it’s totally fine

Aditya, yes with most of those organisations you have to contact them in advance (email) and register for classes. They let you pay for bulk lessons... Usually foreigner (guest) prices.
Some may politically not let you train if you are from an "opposition" group, but I'm general, money talks.
If they get political and don't let you train because you are from an "opposition/rival" organisation.. then that's their loss.
Even the Kodokan judo has visitors and a merchandise stall at the ground floor.

@@KarateDojowaKu Thank you. And what organisation was this 'oldest karate organisation in Japan'? I ask because many people believe that the JKA / WF is the oldest karate org in Japan. But my research tells me of others Shotokan groups that were around at the forming of the JKA back in 1949/50 and that simply did not want to be part of the JKA under Nishiyama & Nakayama. So I am always interested in good quality non JKA groups.

q3) it helps to tilt your head down but keeing an eye contact to where you are hitting at.
q5) if you need to increase speed and stamina, run or do sprints. Improve both the endurance and speed in kumite.
q6) I would not suggest to have deeper or stance that damages your joints. Following quote says "know the enemy, know thyself. A ten thousand battle a ten thousand victory" - Sun Tzu, Art of War
q7) Karate Dojo Waku, shotokan karate. "From one thing, know ten thousand things." - Miyamoto Musashi
q9 LAST ONE) Activity wise, get kids to playing Red light Green light (darumasan ga koronda), Karuta (japanese card game), and dodge the noodles (pool noodles).

When I had my Dojo, I would occasionally have contests for the kids’ class. We would do push up and sit up contests. I had a bag that registered force generated so I would have a strongest punch and kick contest based on the amount of force generated per pound of body weight. Then I would post the results on the dry erase board in the lobby for all the kids and parents to see. Most practices were pretty serious however. Once or twice a year for instance I would have the kids to front punch (Oizuki) for the entire hour class. It was funny to watch because after 500 or 600 punches they would get mad and stare at me and, the madder they got, the better their punches were!
