  • A bit of a longer video today, I decided it'd be good to look at the game design of Dead by Daylight and it's biggest competitors at the moment Video Horror Society and Evil Dead: The Game. We look at the gameplay, balance, graphics, level design, user interfaces, community and overall fun! I hope you enjoy the video! #DeadbyDaylight #VideoHorrorSociety #EvilDeadTheGame

    The quote about good design being invisible is a really good one. I've always found it hard to explain what I like specifically about a good game, but I can go on forever about what I dislike about a games design. A great video as always.

    What drew me into dead by daylight was how its core gameplay basically took the single player survival horror game experience and crafted it into a competitive multiplayer without the need of the usual mechanics comp multiplayer games use, that being weapons and revolving around combat with those weapons in order to instill competitiveness and a way for players to "beat" the other player, to not fall into the typical overused tropes. Survival horror games in particular the older ones like silent Hill and such either had really limited or no gunplay to speak off and most of the enemies were just strong for you to go head to head with requiring more stealth and clever work arounds like flashlights to blind or making a distraction to ward off the enemy, these staples are implemented in dbd I think very well they aren't perfect but considering the task I think it holds up

    Part of the phenomenon of DbD players who hate the current state of the game but who continue to play is almost certainly tied to the "sunk cost" fallacy. People who have previously sunk a lot of money and countless hours feel like they are now "too invested to stop" or that the game "owes them a return on investment" that they don't feel they are getting. This is part of how predatory game design works but is ultimately an emotional trap that the player puts upon themselves. They keep longing for the day that the game will be "fun again" and anytime a potentially similar game comes along, they scrutinize it to see if it offers an experience that will finally "rescue" them from that trap by giving them another vessel to direct that emotional energy into.

    Your channel is so underrated, your content is very fresh in DBD's content landscape and this video is no different. I have seen many other creators needlessly bashing DBD propping up other asyms as perfect games meant to topple DBD. I'm glad this game took a more balanced approach, I think you may have went a little easy on DBD when it comes to its community, which I think is a little worse than you give credit, but otherwise I pretty much agree with your takes on each game.
    I have not played evil dead but it looks fun enough. I bet I would like it though as L4D versus I enjoyed greatly back in the day.
    I have played VHS and it is fun, but I just don't think it is my cup of tea when compared to DBD. You pretty much vocalized my thoughts on the menu UI, I never was able to say why I did not like it, but I knew that I didn't.

    Glad I found you. You analyze games in an intellectual manner which I appreciate. You seem to have a versatile appreciation of the different elements of game design. Makes for an educational video.
    Regarding VHS, there absolutely is a MMR system and it's been there for a while. As you can imagine, with the Community being quite small at the moment MMR has a hard time matching players of similar skill levels. This problem will be in as satisfying a state as DBD provided Early Access is successful and the Community has ample size.
    I watch a lot of VHS content creators and I haven't seen any of them wish for DBD to be "killed". Definitely there were plenty of videos expressing frustration that the game still had bugs that took forever to be addressed, new perk additions invariably caused the game to become unbalanced, the grind could be brutal for casual players, and fatigue at a Gameplay loop which had become staid. I have found that the numerous creators I follow were hoping that VHS would push Behavior to listen to the Community more and fix the many problems which only received temporary fixes. From what I understand, their wishes have been answered.
    Ultimately, your main point you ended on is the one which any rational person will arrive at once our innate tribalism abates : competition makes things better.
    There is more than enough room for 3 great ASYM'S in the market, all 3 of which play very differently.
    Ice Cream is great, but only having Vanilla for the rest of time is disheartening.
    More flavors = More good times (except for Neopolitan, it just tastes like indecision).

    • @StyxDipped
      @StyxDipped 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, before VHS even came out quite a lot of people were commenting that they hoped VHS would be the game to knock DbD out it’s place or that new asymmetrical games would leave DbD irrelevant and dying. Mostly as a way to display their displeasure with bugs or what they felt was lacking - there was plenty of this attitude. Perhaps not from content creators but certainly online in general. ^^

    • @elberethgilthoniel1397
      @elberethgilthoniel1397 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StyxDipped Hi there. It's the curse of being King of the Castle. You come under the most scrutiny and there is always talk about how someone can do things better. That said, it is 100% fair to say that Behavior was not addressing a myriad of problems with DBD for years and there was constant frustration in the Community with a lack of responsiveness on the part of the Devs. I think people in comments (not VHS content creators, we need to be clear on that and fair in our statements) would say they wanted DBD to die because they had reached the point where they saw no hope of DBD ever getting out of the loop of introducing new Perks, breaking the games balance, nerfing killers so they weren't fun to play, then nerfing survivors so things were frustrating there, and generally always feeling frustrated because the game felt rather broken. I say that's part of DBD's charm and understandable given that the game was never designed to be competitive or really well balanced. It was supposed to be a fun, casual party game and the code used was specifically one that allows for quick creation, but difficult fine adjustment.
      But, as we clearly see, VHS poses enough of a real challenge to DBD that Behavior is putting their foot on the gas and making substantial changes.
      That's the beauty of real competition and why it's so important that humanity embraces the competitive spirit. Rivalry stimulates people to grow and is good for both sides, even if it is uncomfortable. The ultimate winners are of course us, the gamers and fans.
      I want VHS to do fantastically well.
      I want DBD to continue to do amazingly well.
      I want Evil Dead to keep bringing in new players and giving them their money's worth many times over.
      Texas Chainsaw...I hope it does well...but it's a little too grim for my taste, but the more good games in the ASYM genre the better.
      Thanks again for the comment.
      Have a nice weekend.

      @@elberethgilthoniel1397 Oh, I agree entirely! I mainly play DbD (rather casually too) just because it’s what I’m used to but I’m not particularly biased towards any of the games and I sincerely hope they all do well. They’re all entirely different games that offer their own take on the genre and I think some new competition in the market is always a good thing. I hope that the games can honestly learn from each other, or at least from BHVR’s mistakes in the past, if anything.
      I hope you also enjoy your weekend! I appreciated reading your take on it all! ^^

    Good video, pretty based.
    I haven't played evil dead yet, but out of the three, VHS has been for me personally the most rewarding to play. I enjoy a competition in a game, and while I enjoy the chase loops in dbd, I found it disastisfying at times.
    I enjoy going for flashlight saves and intricate plays, and swf is the most fun I have in dbd. VHS feels like a successor to those feelings, and I agree with just about everything you said in this video about it. The playerbase has mostly been influxed by dissatisfied dbd players, but I do think that will improve overtime if the game sticks around

    • @SkelXton

      When it comes to which of the 3 is most likely to have the best platform for a competitive scene, VHS would take the cake. The other 2 play more casually.

    I'd say this video is pretty based, pretty fair, except for the community chapter. You only highlighted the few good players of dbd even though that game is infamous for it's toxic community, while you focused only on the bad part of the community of vhs, even though majority of it's community is all about support and love for this game. You said it yourself, you were put off by the players of *dbd* that were excited for a new game to be the new dbd killer. Those are from your community, not ours. Here in the vhs community we just want both games to succeed, while most of the dbd community want either game, dbd or vhs, for 1 of them to fail. This game is voice chat yet I've never met a toxic person in vc and neither have the creators who stream this game basically 24/7, from what I've watched. Have a good day!

    • @TheHotCross
      @TheHotCross  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, the game is in closed beta which is why the vc is still ok imo. As for the more negative foundation, a lot of the early adopters of VHS were fairly negative DbD people I'd agree. And it was those people that put me off the game, the same way I imagine they put people off DbD. It's not the wider VHS community that was the problem at all, I'm more pointing to the louder more negative voices who feel like there can only be one game to rule them all. Hopefully that makes sense! You have a great day too!

    What a horrible environment have video games became. In one side we have game studios that have kidnapped the media to push political agendas or the vision of an often untalented and wealthy individual who designs games clearly out of touch with the average video game player, now referred as "gamer" in an effort of professionalize the occupation. Other side is where we find platforms and "journalists" or "critics". They share some interests with the game studios, both are keeping the industry hostage to promote political agendas and ugly female characters. Escapism is no longer acceptable. Critics are responsible for bringing down great titles and lifting up horrible garbage of games, again, to push political agendas. And the last part are the players, the ones who spend money and time in the actual games, and the only ones who can barely influence the industry. All devs should be video game players, not artists interested in the media. But that's not the only issue, platforms like steam, gatekeep who can publish games. They have to uphold certain political values to be worthy of an opportunity in the virtual shelves. That VHS game looks horrible, but its mechanics look more balance, it's not just a victim vs a killer. The evil dead game seems the most boring concept of a game that I've seen in a long time, I can't believe people invested millions of dollars and hundreds of hours of time to create... that thing. And DbD should be the only game with those mechanics, despite all the licenses BhVR has managed to aquire, they haven't been able to create a balanced game system. Which ironically, contrary to all the licenses... it's free...
