A handy road trick is building a road going out toward a village you want to capture. If the tile your unit is on and the next tile have roads, the unit can move a second tile after moving along the road, even if the destination tile doesn't have a road. Also, forests block multi tile movement of units such as riders, but not if they have a road. However, enemies can't use roads in your territory, so growing forests on your roads can hinder invasions!
If you’re being sieged and you make a super unit, but it has no where to go because all adjacent spaces are occupied… you don’t get the super unit and you still lose the city. Watch out for that.
Yeah I think maybe Midjiwan could adjust the feature to only highlight units that can move, then maybe cycle to units that can also attack? Or maybe mark a unit as "no actions" for the turn so the cycle can skip that unit? Idk, seems like a lot of complexity for a fringe feature. At the same time there's plenty of times I want to move a unit but not attack with it
@@GullYYGamer They should have a feature to end a units turn. A pass action that greys the unit out and prevents it from coming up on the active unit cycling again, that you can use if you don't want to take any more actions with that unit this turn.
1:02 for the first one you can also find out weather you’ve moved or not by if that unit can heal themself on that turn if so they have not been moved if not they have already been moved or have attacked
Been playing constantly since 2018 and didn’t know a few of these (the white circle to show movement and the clicking a unit before it moves into fog). Great vid!
I really like tip #5 because I often play on quite large maps, and always struggle to find that last one or two units that I haven’t moved yet. Thanks for the help!
Regarding tip 5: I wish they had a "Done" option for a unit. I moved him but I don't want him to attack. That way it won't keep telling me I still have units to move and I can get to the blue "End Turn" icon. Tip 6: Let the enemy move a giant into your city if you have it surrounded with his or your units and maybe some water. Fill in the area where he moved from and then produce a giant. Their giant dies. (I only play bots, so this probably won't work against human players.)
I'm playing Polytopia for ~6,5 years and I didn't know about two things: 1)the white circle after the movement of the unit 2)the black cross on the retaliation unit. It's incredible how those small things are making the gameplay more convenient. ❤Polytopia
I know you stated that clicking the tribe icon to exit the Tech Tree doesn't provide a competitive advantage but that action, rather than reaching to the top left corner of my phone every time I exit the Tech Tree, has saved me time and energy which is very important during Live Games. One tactic I employ during Live Games while on Steam is using my right hand for the mouse and my left just for the 'Esc' button. It's pretty handy to use a free hand to exit the Tech Tree or Info tabs instead of the Game Stats tab rather than dragging and clicking the exit buttons with a cursor.
And if you go to the bathroom at 3 am and scream "シマンティ神に栄光あれ" 3 times and chew on the soap, a portal will appear that gives you a necklace. If you wear it, you guarantee to win every single round of polytopia
You can delete a sieging unit by surrounding the sieging unit then upgrading the village and selecting a super unit. Since the unit has no place to go, it just gets deleted.
I feel like the 7th point is already explained through the description of roads itself, something better could have been the fact that unclaimed villages also have a built in road on the tile, so if you have a unit next to an unclaimed village you can get away with only building 1 road to move it instead of needing 2
Funny thing I've been playing polytopia since it was released amd I didn't know about the unit moved or not indicator until now. People on forums simply suggested to check if the rider can recover or if it can attack nearby units because they didn't know about this feature either 😅
I’ve played two seasons on polychamps and I literally had no idea about the first one lol, that should absolutely be in the tutorial, can’t count how many times I have messed up riders!! Oh and thanks for the tip about how corner spawns change starting score, that could have messed me up 🙏
On my first 2-star city I start with, I always try to upgrade the climbing tech (and sometimes wait for the navigation tech depending on tribe / terrain) before I upgrade my cities to produce 3 stars. This way, when I upgrade and get the two options between workshop and explorer, I select explorer and if the little dude goes over any mountains it reveals much more fog and likelihood of finding enemies and earning bonus stars. If I wait for the nav tech, too, it will send it over water tiles as well. I think the game just updated and lowered the points you get from enemies as you advance turns, but I also used to wait until turn 3 to do the first explorer because unveiling enemies used to get you 5+ points each. But lately it’s been 3-5 points, most often only 3. Also I can’t figure out how to score well on any tribe other than Polaris. I like to play all Polaris on Polaris at 15 enemies and Crazy. I try to use my above tip to get early game points so I can afford the trade tech while it’s still cheap and get an ice bank. Then on Crazy, there’s higher chances that at least 1-4 other Polaris enemies will build an ice bank in their cities. If I ever see another ice bank, I focus on rushing to those cities to capture, obtaining their ice banks and all the extra stars they accumulate. I used to score in the top 5 for Polaris all the time until the game scoring updated. But regardless, I can’t seem to score well using any other tribe and don’t know their secrets or what I’m missing. I don’t even like other tribes since they introduced the new naval tech.
Thanks!! New player in love with the game. I've accidently figured out some of these but I have been so desperate for a way to figure out how to find my people that haven't moved!
This might be obvious to non colorblind people but shallow waters have a shade indicator to see if they are next to land, even if that area is behind fog of war / cloud. And they don't get lighter if there is more water past what you can see, can be helpful to know if you should prioritize bridges/land units or boats
You can use the damage calculator in reverse as well. If you select an enemy unit within range of your units and then hover/hold on your unit, you can see how much damage an enemy can do to you next round.
Aside from the giant, and roads, these are new (to me). I've noticed new players and returning ones avoid some features like diplomacy. The embassy and cloak are very useful.
Oh my, one of the parts that was known information about the clicking a unit to see if it will kill yours through retaliation with the black cross on the units circle I didn't actually know because I am colorblind. I looked for so long to try and see what you were talking about, didn't see it, then tried looking specifically at the circle and noticed that the barely noticeable darker parts of the red circle were even there 🥲I want colorblind mode. luckily I found the calculator thing on my own, as well as most of the other stuff without this video.
A boosted polaris knight on ice with the polartism tech will let you move like 10 tiles across the map but it's so nich it will probably never happen in a live game. I have a video on my channel of me doing it in an offline game.
The damage calculator does not only work with your units! Press the unit that you want to simulate attack and hover/hold the unit it would hypothetically attack
My feature: when you develop road tech, you can know if on the other side of the sea there is land or water, if bridge is suggested to be built this mean there is land
Good day sir, i want to ask you a question, how can i get a 3 plus opponents? even i bought all the tribes it's still saying that i need to get all the tribes
idk if this is hidden but something i just noticed not too long ago is that standing on mountain tiles will reveal more terrain than standing on normal plain old open field
I like to have climbing tech bought before using the explorer upgrade on a city so if the little dude that goes around aimlessly unveiling fog tiles hits a mountain it reveals more tiles than normal. Works if you also have the navigation tech and it will move over water tiles.
Hey Gully! Do you think that you would ever consider doing fan games? my friend and I watch your uploads regularly and would like to face off against you. Thanks!
I don’t know if it’s just me, but these tips seemed all over the board. The white circle seems like something I’d never know on my own, and then it’s just the giant trick. Still good video though.
Wait what they changed the roads thing? I always thought that you just add 1 movement when there's a road So for a rider, it would move 3 tiles I didn't know they can move 4 tiles
I've never seen a polytopia video naturally pop up in my feed
UNTIL NOW
Same
Me neither and I've been playing since 2016
Same I don't even watch polytopia videos on this phone so it's weird that this video popped up
This one did lmao
The first two should definitely be explained in an in-game tutorial
a cool hidden feature is that if you play xin xi you are part of my gang for people cooler than the rest of the tribes

3:34 this feature is helpful but it will show units even if they can only break ice so it sometimes becomes useless
Also will show cymanti troops that can explode as well. This is kind of annoying with the centipede at times.

This is also true!
Also if you've unlocked free spirit then the unit can only disband if it hasn't moved yet
Another useful fact is that the water is a little lighter near the coastlines. Using this feature, you can see the coastline through the fog

3:50 but if the enemy troop has nowhere to move when you upgrade your city, the enemy troop will disappear and replaced by your super unit.

the first tip, those actually only update in recent time, back in the old day, you just have faith
Been playing the game for 4 years and had no clue about the holding to show damage or sweating enemy feature
Remember:
If you play as Polaris, just remind yourself you can smoke any amount of tribes with enough Moonies.
So 8 tiles is the max distance for a knight with roads? Like giant push, 6 tiles and poly slide.
Technically the max distance is however many lines of Polytaurs you have set up. You can Poly push onto another Polytaur then Poly push again, etc.
Can you make a guide on how to play with polaris post naval update?
