- Today I review this rare 1983 horological icon and diving watch from Seiko. Not only is this watch a movie star, t'salso important for historical significance, being a revolutionary first step for Seiko into making analog-digital hybrid diving watches. Beyond its technical innovation and retro coolness, the watch was propelled into stardom after being famously worn by the former Mr Universe turned action movie star then Governor in the following 5 movies.

This is one hell of a bad ass watch. Legit military watch
I've circled around to watch this great video again. After the first Arnie reissue sold out ridiculously faster than I expected, I snagged a SNJ028 the second time around (which was a good thing since it sold out again). After watching this video months ago, I longed for one but knew finding a functional original would've been near impossible. After wearing it for 2 days straight (including to bed), I really love it. If I had any regrets, it was that I chose the 028 (rose gold tone) versus the 025. The 028 is never going to pass for a dress watch but in my opinion, it's just a bit too nice for a daily tool watch. Either way, I'm watching TGV's Arnie video again (for historical purposed mind you).
Thank you very much for reviewing this watch. I used to own one in the mid 80's, got it when I first started scuba diving. Unfortunately it was stolen, but as the first diver I owned (and I own several nice pieces now) it remains my absolute favourite. Well done on yet another fine review. I have a feeling that I will watch this one over and over again.

I rode my bike to see Commando in the theater. Even then, I was watching out for the watches and I tended toward Casios of a vaguely military style. Back then, Seiko might as well have been Rolex to me! Best-David

I saw two Seiko watches that similar to that watch but without the digital display. The SRP641K1 and SRP653K1. I don't know if it can satisfy you tho.

I don't feel like paying much more than a timepiece's original price owing to it getting rare and sought after because of the end of its production, since I don't enjoy being ripped off

That intro brought me back to the 80s action movies binge that I did about a year ago. Both Arnold and Sylvester defined 80s action movies. Amazing watch btw!

As for new Ani-digi watches, EXCELLENT question. One of my most underrated faves is the Hamilton flight timer, very cool swiss made 40mm piece that most people never talk about. It goes without saying, Casio has tons too.

Got steered to this video via an article about Seiko's re-release of an updated version of this watch. Solar-powered, 200M depth rating, but almost a spot-on match, appearance-wise. (I'm a fairly recent subscriber, so I hadn't seen this one yet.) Good stuff.

I hope you will be reviewing the new Arnie SNJ025! I picked one up and I am in love. Like the original, it’s a behemoth, but wearable for little wristed guys like us. The chrono can measure up to 99 hrs, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds! Now my G-Shock sits unworn!😍

FYI - OEM gaskets & crystal are still available. As well as aftermarket shrouds.

They have reproduced in a solar watch Edition. Solar divers Edition. It’s a pretty good looking watch as well. And it’s not very expensive. I paid around $350 new . Check it out
I replaced my gaskets, plus, I found a company that made me a 100% genuine sapphire crystal for my H558, so when my watch maker completely redone and cleaned the face and all, the watch is like factory look plus water proof for scuba diving and water sports etc .

I think Arnie also wore a Casio amw 320. An underrated watch by all accounts. The fit and finish is great and at a price point that any working bloke can afford. One of my favourite watches is the humble amw 330. It has a 22mm lug width and although inexpensive, it looks great with a NATO strap. Please check it out. Great channel and I enjoy your videos. Have numerous old Seth Thomas clocks.

Somehow I can remember Arnold also wore a bunch of CASIO watches, mainly the classic stainless G-SHOCK. And somewhere else I've read the SEIKO was actually his preferred everyday watch... Can't confirm. Do you?

After you dumped gasoline on my watch fire and I have bought about 15 watches I would have to say only one would have done it all. Including 3 Hammys, 2 Casio, 4 Timex vintage. 3 of those Oris 17 jewel shock resistant, 2 Seiko 5's and a Citizen BM 810-03E. After spending more time studying watches in the last 4 months then I did in four years of college. The Casio watches were the MDV 106 diver and the AMW 330B chrono. Both very accurate. But in reality if I had to keep only one watch it would be the Citizen. It has stayed within a second a month. Has 100m water resistance. Came with a green canvas band which I have learned to like. Have picked up black and brown Hadley Roma leather bands and a shark mesh that takes the watch to any dress level I would ever need. After buying all these good deal watches I could have got the Citizen and had a pile of money in the bank or just got a nice Tudor Prince serviced and all for a good watch and continued to wear an old Casio to work. You are right, I should have just waited and got the Tudor I wanted. Did I mention the 5 LL Bean watches? They are my work beaters now and keep excellent time as well. My math is bad. That is 29 watches!
I have this same watch in the 100% original, given to me from my father in 1984 the evening I graduated high school. One thing to mention about this watch it was the last of the true radiological iridium paint that they no longer use due to the factory employees licking the brush as they painted the dial. Mine will still peg a meter for radioactivity. It's my favorite in my collection.

You said it looks beaten up and scratched? For me it got character. A scuffed watch is a well worn watch.
I just picked up a Seiko Arnie H558-5000 from Uncle Seiko and it rules! Great video!
I remember seeing Arnie on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno wearing this watch . Leno asked him about it. Arnie said it was one of his favorite watches.
I have a humble suggestion, good sir! For the alarm, you could do worse than check the piezoelectric plate on the watchback. If that's the only thing broken, it can be very easily replaced very cheaply.
In brand new condition it would be nice, but the scratched up ones on eBay aren’t worth the dear price tag.
You might want to check Seiko H601-8020, Sports 150, with tachymeter. Manufactured 1970 to 1979 , maybe the first digital -analog' I am not sure if this considered a dive watch But' I've used it for 9 years as a dive watch; still works.
Time to revisit this with the SNJ025.

Just got one. Absolutely love it, however I went with the Gen 2, SNJ025P1. Excellent watch for a larger sized wrist/person. I am a fairly big man and in my humble opinion, anyone with a 7.5/ 7.75 inch wrist size, will find this watch quite large.
I'm wondering, TGV (and/or esteemed fellow TUG viewers), what you think about the appropriateness of the Seiko Arnie reissue for a man with a 7 inch/17.78 cm. My wife has very thoughtfully procured one of these pieces for me after my having made a comment about one that we saw "in the wild", and I'm concerned that this beast will overwhelm me, as much as I love the design and lineage. Thanks very much for your videos and your evident passion and interest in the hobby.

An SNJ025 review please!
Hoffman wore a gmt master with a BLACK bezel in the movie Marathon Man. You can clearly see this in the scene in which his character meets the girl in the university library.
My cousin Marcin wants this watch. A classic.
This model was sold in the Marine Corps Exchanges in the 80's. A favorite of Recon, Grunts and generally field Marines or POG's who wanted "the look". I remember a white faced and orange faced versions as well. I bought two and used them with Bravo Co. -1/1 (rubber boat company) destroying one in training on San Clemente Island in the late 80's (smashed face) and my back-up in water ops in West Africa in 91 (ripped off wrist, had nylon band). I loved this watch. Should have bought a few more before I left Cali. I have the retro one now. Nothing special in the 80's just a good functioning dive watch with a low Exchange price.
The Citizen C023-088069 is actually the first diver with LCD included and also includes a cool depth gauge.

Got mine for £50 back in the 90s. Could do with a new bezel and glass but it keeps going. Wonder what it worth now?

Very interesting. There are some close similarities to my new Seiko GMT kinetic 5M85-0AB0. The shroud is very similar and is fastened with the same philips head screws and the shroud protects a portion of the rotating bezel, leaving gaps to grip it with, as on your Seiko. Also, as on yours, the grip of the bezel is slightly raised above the bezel itself and above the crystal. Amazing these similarities when you realize these two watches are almost 40 years apart from each other.
Also, Hardlex was in use by Seiko in 1972. I know this because my boss had a Seiko 6139 and he used to brag about the Hardlex glass on it and make fun of my Timex because of it. He used to tell me that the Hardlex crystal on his watch was worth more than my entire Timex!

So great you picked up this watch! I loved Arnold as a kid and the movie Commando was the movie that made me think wearing a watch was cool and badass. This was the watch that started my addiction and illness. :-)

Oh its so true my Seiko chrono beater is just the bee's knee's a fantastic brand for the money. Those SKX 007's are hard to get at the right price over here for a quality piece..
You can't beat Seiko watches they are hard wearing, I have an automatic 24 jewel Seiko watch and I've had it for 27 years and it still works and I never needed to send it away to get it repaired always keeps perfect time.
Arnold also wore the Invicta Russian Diver in public.
I love Seiko..I want The Metal Gear Solid 5 Seiko!!
