  • Come join us for ice hockey in Zagreb, Croatia as we watch an Austrian Hockey League game between the home team KHL Medveščak Zagreb versus the Vienna Capitals. With my birthday just around the corner watching a hockey game in Croatia was the perfect early present. The tickets were cheap the game was exciting and the passionate crowd made for a great experience. We'd highly recommend going to a hockey game in Zagreb, Croatia if you get the chance.

    Hockey game in Zagreb, Croatia watching Medveščak Bears travel video transcript:
    It two days it is my birthday and you asked me a couple of weeks ago what do you want for your birthday? So I realized we were going to be in Zagreb so I was like researching some things. Hmmm. Should I go out for a nice dinner? Should I have something else? But then I realized they have a hockey team. Oh my gosh. Yeah. And you know how much I like ice hockey. Like being a Canadian and being away from Canada that is one of the things I miss the most. Aside from family and friends is actually going to live hockey games. So when I found out they had a team here I was like that is my birthday present. So we are going to watch a Medveščak Zagreb game. And they used to be in Kontinental Hockey League but now they've switched back to the Austrian League so they're playing Vienna tonight. Oh and we're going to go checkout that game and show you the whole experience.
    Time to go buy those tickets. Alright Sam tickets in hand. It was 30 Kuna and so that came to like 5 US dollars I believe. What kind of seats did you get for 5 bucks. Ah, they are all the same price throughout the whole arena. She said she was giving us the two best seats so hopefully we can trust her. The ticket ladies opinion but yeah we've got our tickets so let's go in.
    You have something to show us. I got the hat and I forgot to tell you the team name is the bears. That is a ferocious looking bear. And ready for my superman moment. He's stripping down. They were both quite cheap. I think it was 90 for the shirt and 60 for the hat. Kuna. About 10 bucks for the hat and 15 bucks for the shirt.
    I've got the goodies. Big thing of popcorn. This was Crno beer. it looks like a dark beer. And yeah we're set for the game.
    The first period is over and the action was really good. Lots of back and forth. Actually it looked like Vienna was going to score first but then we rallied and we ended up scoring late in the period. So guess what we're up one nothing. That is awesome.
    Second break. People are really angry. Not second break. End of the second period. Alright. Anyways, it was an awesome second period for us because we scored two goals and now we're up 3 to 1. So the big question is can we hold onto the lead and win this game. Let's find out.
    So that wraps up our hockey experience here in Zagreb, Croatia. Your birthday hockey. It was an awesome birthday present. That was such great entertainment. Like I had so much fun. And it was so cool that the home team won. Yeah. We didn't just win by like a goal or two. We ended up beating them 4-1. And the crowd really got into it. At the very end of the game all the players came out and had like salutes and cheers. And it was just like the entertainment value was insane. Normally people are rushing to get out and beat the crowds. It was like they won the championship or something. That is cool I mean it really got the fans into it and it was just such a good experience. If you're visiting Zagreb and you can come to one of these games. I highly highly recommend it. I'd go to another one for sure.

    The home team from this video, Medveščak Zagreb is bankrupt and the situation got so bad so they finished the season with amateur team and lost like 30 games in a row. The season ended but we still don't know what will happen with our club :(

    Montreal Canadiens first goalie and owner was a Croatian. Joe Catarinich. After the first season he bought out the other 2 owners and changed the crest to C and H. Croatia Hrvatska. He is in the Hockey Hall of Fame !

    I'm from Zagreb and I am a Medveščak fan. Was at that game (think I saw you in front of the fan shop), and what made that win even more special is that Vienna were unbeaten (13-0) before that game.

      Even better, Wienna is last year champion with 12-0 score in play off so they had 25 games without loss until that game.

    Just came across this video...glad you enjoyed your time in Zagreb and the game. If you came a few years ago, especially when they first entered the EBEL going to a Medvescak game was the thing to do and the arena was packed with loud and passionate fans. In fact, for a few games per season they would play games in the larger and more modern arena simply called the "Arena" and they would pack that place to capacity. Interest has fallen off a bit now but you have your hard core fans there that come to every game and make it fun.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Liked it both to be honest! It is cheaper in Zagreb but the stadium in Bratislava is nicer. Arguably the KHL is a better league but the level of hockey is great to be honest.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It was a great surprise and to be honest for what you pay for the ticket you get great value as the quality of play is high. Going to an NHL game in Canada is so expensive and if it is a boring or a bad game you feel almost guilty spending that kind of money on the ticket.

    how do the arenas differ from American or Canadian hockey?

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They tend to be quite a bit smaller. More like a university/college or minor league team. Aside from that it is basically the same. As you exit the stands you have concessions and other team shops around the perimeter. Oh, one thing that is different is that when the crowd boos they often whistle instead.

      When they played in KHL, Medveščak sometimes hosted their home games in a 15K seats "Zagreb Arena", but they could rarely fill majority of the seats so they switched to much smaller "Dom sportova" in which they played today. Arena Zagreb looked spookily empty with crowds of only a few thousand

    Trivia question ? Let's see just how big a hockey historian you really are... Who was Al Melgard ? His equivalent for major league baseball was a man named Bill Veeck who as a team owner first used the same exact concept for baseball. He probably stole the idea from Al.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooooh good question! I had to look it up ;) Amazing that he played the organ for over 2000+ Blackhawks games!

    • @mesillahills
      @mesillahills 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the old 3 balcony Chicago Stadium there was a wooden sound radiator hung from the ceiling the size of a folded basketball court. Most the base pipes were mounted in that fold. And the organ loft almost hung out over the ice. Melgard could almost shake the building with base notes and certainly move the fabric on people's chests. Whenever a player fell down in a manner that everyone saw, he hit a big base note that everyone felt too as that player hit the ice. It always drew a big laugh. He brought organs to hockey just as Veeck brought organs to baseball. He is still very famous in Chicago today as is Veeck who owned the White Sox.
