  • The oldest hockey team in Germany, doesn’t look like you’d think it would.
Many athletes on the Schongau Mammuts play strictly for the love of the game, and still work their day jobs.
Founded in 1863 and the hockey club joining in 1951 the organization has felt the highs of promotion, and the sadness that comes with relegation. They currently compete in Germany’s Regionalliga the 4th level of ice hockey in the country. At the last minute just before the season started they signed my friend Matthieu and opened their doors, giving me access to the life of playing in their organization.

Special thanks to Seb for helping out with the German translations! Check out his hockey Instagram here: instagram.com/sebpurehockey/ EDIT: Hey everyone! Little correction on this video, turns out the organization was founded in 1863, and they added their hockey club in 1951! So, that wouldn't make it the oldest one. Special thanks to the ones who pointed this out!

Just one quick fact, the club itself was founded in 1863, as a sports and athletics club, but they actually only started playing hockey in 1951/1952. There are a lot of hockey clubs in Germany that started playing hockey way earlier. Cheers

You could check out de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSV_Schongau or de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eishockey_in_Deutschland
Unfortunately there‘s no English version or just a very abridged one. Google translator etc. might help more with that.

Hey Robert, thank you for this interesting Video. Im from Schongau and my uncle is actually playing for the Schongau Mammuts. His name is Steiner. I found you through your video about Nick Mattinen and i found it pretty interesting and well-made. Just as this video. This is even more interesting for me, cause it is my home :D Although it was pretty weird to see every-day-places like the trainstation in a video haha. Keep up the great work man!

You don’t often see these lower leagues in different countries so I find this very interesting. I would love to see you join a college hockey team in the USA and Canada. I live nearby Quinnipiac in Hamden Connecticut which is the hometown of goaltender Jonathan Quick which would be fun to see a video on them. They have a great arena which is unique as it’s a two in one. One side is a 4,000 seat hockey arena the other is a 5,000 seat basketball arena back to back.

@@RobertGreeley well you always have a hockey friend in Connecticut. There are a lot of great teams and venues here for a small state. Mattire Family Arena at Sacred Heart in Fairfield CT is also a great place as well it’s the newer arenas built in 2022 and their locker room could envy a lot of NHL teams

Founded in 1863, TSV Schongau (TSV = Turn- und Sportverein = Gymnastics and Sports Club) is, like most German sports clubs, a multi-sport club. In the early days, gymnastics was the main activity. Today, active members are also offered soccer, badminton, swimming and a few other sports. The ice hockey section, now known as the Schongau Mammuts, was founded in 1951. So this is by no means the oldest ice hockey club in Germany - not even close. And I think you know that too. Too bad, the video would actually be interesting enough, so there's no need for such annoying click-bait.

Honestly, I didn’t! Thanks for the info, when you look at the list for all the hockey teams in the league online it says it was found 1863, which is a later date than anything else listed for the DEL, DEL2, etc! Where did you find all this, would love to read more, thanks again!
