Dear Sue, I simply love your videos! You are such a lovely person. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. I learn a lot from listening to you. God bless you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of cleaning celluloid fans. Very informative. Your knowledge of collectibles/ antiques is impressive. Thank you for keeping my "little grey cells" inquisitive and active.
Good morning Sue I like my lil fans too , especially living in the south where it is hot as hades . I love how you showed us how to clean them . These fans bring back memories of the ladies in my church on sunday mornings with no a/c back then and all the ladies pulling out their fans and fanning themselves . Thank you for such wonderful memories . Oh my dog caught a squirrel the other day and you never heard such a scream out of a small thing , she did not hurt him she was wagging her tail holding him down , she scared him . I picked him up and checked him over carefully i did not want him biting me , he did 'nt thank goodness but he ran like the wind when I put him down . who knew a squirrel could scream like that ? LOL .
Love the creative idea of the sewing kit. Suggestion: add a small flat magnet to inside (top or actual tin) to hold needles a couple of small safety pins.
Hey! Just discovered your channel looking for info on my great grandmother's things, this video helped me a lot! My celluloid fan has some interesting designs that I don't think are present on the ones you showed, and I was wondering if you knew anything about that. It appears to be curved designs, kind of raised off the fan to look 3D, and of the same material as the fan. Thanks for your video, it helped lots!
I too, collect fans. My collection started out of necessity when living in Nicaragua for six years. With temperatures in the 90's and humidity to match, one would be crazy to leave the house without one. And, if you didn't have AC in your home, you would need several there as well. Thanks for the education on celluloid fans, the lingo, and different styles.
Good morning Sue, Audie and FOS’s! I love this video! That teal cockade fan is stunning! When you were explaining about the fan from the palais it reminded me of the song “Come Dancing “ by the Kinks where he is reminiscing about his sister going dancing at the Palais. This is also a fortuitous video, I came across a tiny celluloid fan last weekend for only $2! It does have the original ribbon, but I think it needs to be replaced. I considered sending it your way for ribbon replacement 😉
Colleen Staver - I immediately thought of the Kinks song as well! I love them & forget how many truly amazing songs they’ve done from early on! XXX Jet 😘🧡😻😻
Yes, I remember that song - I have always been a huge Kinks fan. And that song captured the reality of the time between the wars when going out dancing was what all the young people did - it was their entire social world. And they took these fans with them... 😁
I love fans, a ladies best friend. I have the paper full cockade with oriental flowers, several in each little purse for when I went to the dance hall! However you never know when you will be somewhere air circulation is lacking so I always have one with me. (Sigh - too old for dance halls now!) Sue, when you do your videos, I hear a lot of traffic go by, lets hope Audie doesn't try crossing road to see neighbors when it is busy. Great idea on the sewing kit Sue! That size little tin is also perfect to hold needles, a magnetic strip inside lid holds loose ones.
No worries - Audie is afraid of traffic. He runs the other way when he hears a car. And I schedule his time outdoors for periods when the traffic is very low. My goal is to get him down to just one trip outside - between 5 and 7 am - that would be the safest time for him. But we'll have to see how that plays out - it's a work in progress... 😸😸😸
@@suemeonyoutube Glad to hear it, I think fewer cats get hit by cars than pooches but its something one always has to be concerned with - and I certainly know there is no arguing when a cat wants out and won't take no for an answer!
Randy Romines you took the words right out of my mouth! I was thinking small folding scissors would be the perfect addition! I am so glad you wrote in, I have a few pieces of a ginger jar lid that I dropped, and I know you would make something stunning with the pieces. May I send it to you?

I love your little fans. They remind me of when I was a kid we would see them in every souvenirs shop we visited. Good memories. Have a great day everyone!
It's 102 degrees today in Montreal. No way am I cleaning anything. I'm not moving an inch. We're down to about 350 covid cases a day for all of Canada. I was finally given the go ahead to visit my mom and actually enter the building. But she said, "Stay home! It's too hot" Bummer!
Good Morning Sue❣️❣️❣️ Your fans are lovely...I always carry a fan in my handbag...hot flashes are a real thing 😂. Thanks for the useful information. ~Jeanne~
Hi Sue thank you for the lesson on cleaning fans. Would you please do a lesson on replacing the silk ribbon? Also the finger ring on one of my fans is broken. The buttons are there but the celluloid is broken. Do you have any ideas on how to replace it? Thank you for all your hard work.
I'm so sorry - it can't be done. I have a great little fan with a broken finger ring, and it just sits in my fan box because I know I will eventually need to get rid of it... 😥 When I come across a fan that has broken celluloid parts - they cannot be fixed - I remove the little rivet buttons and save them in case they can be used on other fans. The only repairs that will work on these fans are the replacement of the buttons and the ribbons. I did a video on re-ribboning fans, by the way. It was almost a year ago, and it will be in my video archives. 😊
Sue, great cleaning tips and I love those fancy fans! What can I use to clean Sharpie ink off of a cream colored alabaster trinket box? Someone wrote their name across the round edge of it. Thanks!
I need one of those cute little fans on a chain to wear around my neck! It would also serve as a great way to tone my arms, just walking around fanning myself with it all day long! Thanks Sue, for a delightful lesson today!
Well, keep an eye on my Etsy shop. I need to thin out my collection. As usual, I got rather carried away and I have many, many more than I can ever use, so I think it may be about time to pass them along. 😊
I'm starting to feel like a little copycat, always posting that I have it or that or those etc. too! My white fan is in its original box and not used after breaking several cheap ones but I have cedar ones in the same style hung on our bedroom wall, and a painted fan from Spain with dancers on it, very pretty. Most places are air conditioned including our house so no need to use a hand fan but we do have ceiling fans as well as electric table ones in each bedroom. I love the idea of the language of fans, as per historical novelists. 😉
Good morning Sue. You look elegant as always and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us again. I always learn something from you everytime I have opportunity to list2to your channel. Thank YOU❤❤❤
Good Morning Sue loved today's topic . I love hand fans. I was at a goodwill last week first time in months so I found a curved hand held white hand fan . I never seen one before is it worth much ?
I can't tell from that description - sorry. Most vintage fans in good condition are worth at least a little - unusual fans could be worth more than a little, so perhaps... 😊
Dear sue . i have a fan like the ones your showing , i would love to gift you , I love your show so much being in the house makes time go by, so where can i sent it.
Well now I have a new thing to look out for and collect! I've always loved fans, but didn't know about these! Hiya Sue, those are some beautiful fans! Wish I had thought of it when having awful hot flashes (still get night sweats but keep a cheap Dollar Tree fan under my pillow)! Are the “fancy” ones called “cockade”? I’d love to get my hands on one (not that I need to carry more in my handbag, oof). Thanks for all the info! Smooches to you & Audie from us! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️ ps I’ve always said PAL-eh, never heard the way you said it, but feh I drive hubs crazy pronouncing every foreign word as it should be pronounced, NOT Americanised!🤣😆😂
We get our pronunciation from the Brits - they called them "palleys," like alleys or galleys... A single dance palais would be "palley." It was a term you were more likely to hear in Boston than in Dallas - mostly because it was a little on the pretentious side. Ordinary folks called them dance halls, but that was a little "hoochie" for some people... 😂 Just had to run across the street and haul Audie off the neighbor's porch. He decided to nap over there. He caught a chipmunk this morning, but I made him let it go so he was a little upset with me, hence stalking off to the neighbor's yard to dis me. I hope the poor chippie survives... 😾😾😾
SueMe - Actually all my British friends say it the French way (in London theres the Hammersmith Palais were you’d see big bands, huge old place, very pretty), so must’ve been a specific dialect; I could see a cockney saying that way. Aw Audie was just doing his job! Poor little chipmunk tho! Give Audie extra treats, he’ll come around he loves you (my kitties told me that😆)! XXX J. 😘🧡😻😻
PS: comment #2. (lol) I really LOVE to take those tins and cover them with clay, to make sweet little stash boxes. I cover pretty much anything with clay, especially if it can be baked in an oven. ;) I just bought a big bag with someone's thimble collection, and I've been giving THEM the eye, here lately... and - I have a source for mint sized tins... are you looking for the altoids size? Or those old bayer aspirin size? If you'll tell me how big, I might be able to help :)
3 5/8" x 3 1/4" x 1/4" - I just measured an old tin I have. I contacted a potential source in the UK - that's where my tins originated - and she tells me they are no longer being made...😥
That's because it IS all plastic. These plastics are made from different formulas to achieve different effects and for different purposes. Celluloid was made to imitate ivory, and it is still called "ivorine" in France. Maybe we should have a video on vintage plastic... 😊
