At my Rite Aid I witnessed clerks refusing a man trying to by a bunch of gift cards. They were on it . They were explaining it to him like Sue is . He seemed so confused. I was so glad they did that.
Aww Sue, you didn’t judge the situation based on the accent. Your mind and intuition quickly processed everything all at once. That’s not racism, that’s just putting all the signs together.
It's very kind of you to say that, and I'd really like to think that my reaction was based on the situation and not any preconceived notions about South Asian people in general. But I still feel I need to look at my reaction and consider the possibility that I am less inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to someone simply because of their accent. It's a scary thought... 😱
@@suemeonyoutube Oh, Sue! That's what the scammers COUNT on! Someone afraid to/or feeling guilty for SENSING trouble afoot based upon life experience. That wasn't 'profiling' but WISDOM. Blessings! Jackie in upstate NY
Thank you for helping that lady not be scammed. This nonsense happens to my mother all the time and every time it's a new adventure trying to convince her she's getting nothing. They're trying to shaft her out of money
I'm so sorry for your poor mother. Once those scammers get their hands on the phone number of a vulnerable person, they will call again and again. They will sell and trade phone numbers, and they will just keep coming. I think the real solution is awareness - and much better law enforcement interventions. 😊
@suemeonyoutube The sad part is I will be sitting there listening to the call, when I realize from the conversation is a scam, they will already have one more piece of information. Now they know her name, her address, her phone number where she banks. She's given them everything but her social security number and account number. I'll pick up the phone and tell the person they better not call back and block the number. It's a full time job.
@@Pay-the-Piper oh, thank you for being so helpful! I once got a message from a friend asking me to send her a cash card for her granddaughter as she was out of the country. For a second I believed it (it was years ago, before we were as aware as we now are). I called my son, and he immediately knew it was a scam. He was in the Army. I had actually considered it. They had gotten my friend’s info. I notified her and she had to change everything! I now wonder if she had visited a dating site.
@MadameRobinson well, I am so glad that you called your son before you sent the money. They do manage to get enough information about you or someone you know and care about to bluff you that the situation is real.
I think the way you approached the woman was to help her avoid a costly mistake. Kudos to you and a reminder for us to help our neighbors when we can. ❤
Anyone would have done it - the woman was so clearly vulnerable and confused. But yes, we do need to be mindful and understand that our older neighbors may not be aware of the dangers, and may not have people in their lives to steer them in the right direction when they need it. We all need to be vigilant, not just for ourselves and our own loved ones, but for anyone at risk. 😊
And the scammers are out in droves, the Medicare scammers are some of the worst , dozens of calls a day ! Never answer unless friends or family come up on caller ID!
So glad you helped that woman. I used to listen to a lot of scambaiter channels (cheap entertainment). I once wasted 4 hours of a scammer's time while I was cooking and baking. He had me on the phone, thinking I was following his instructions to drive to a nearby Walmart to buy several Play Store Gift Cards. Every so often he'd ask where I was and remind me to keep my phone on and not tell any clerk or anyone that asked what I was doing. I was going about my baking and had him on speaker and every few minutes he's ask what was taking so long. I told him that store didn't have very many so was driving to a different location. I knew what he was doing and my sole aim was to see how long I could keep him on the line because that was time he wasn't actually scamming someone else. About 3.5 hours in (and after I made 2 cakes and was working on dinner) I told him I knew what he was doing. He was angry but then I decided to talk to him. I asked why he was doing this and to my surprise he admitted he knew it was a crime, but the village in India that he came from had no opportunities for young people to make money and he wanted to study computer processing. He said he lived with his mother and 4 sisters and they all needed to work. I spoke to him in a non threatening way and while I doubt he gave up his "job" we had a good talk. He said he worked in a call center that employed about 400 people and he has been through one raid where the police came to shut them down and many people ran off so as not to be arrested, including him. He said it scared him but he still had no prospects to make an honest living so he still does this, but it's extremely stressful. Now I have no doubt that I changed this young man's mind and he may still be doing this. I am both disgusted at the crime but I also see why people that lack legal resources do what they do. Talking to this kid humanized him to me enough to not cast blame on every caller with his accent, but I am always vigilant when on the phone. So I do indeed under stand your thoughts about feeling badly about a certain segment of people, based on their accent and where they are calling from. It's hard to NOT feel like you're being racist. It's a crime, for sure. But I don't think it would be that proliferate if people had opportunity. I'm glad you spotted this and stopped it. Thousands of elderly and vulnerable people are victims and yes, the majority of the scams originate in these certain countries. Don't feel badly. You put it all together despite the accent. That doesn't make you a bad person, just someone that is more aware.
Hey, if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck - it's a duck, accent or no accent. I have grown wary of people calling me on my landline where I do not see the number who is calling, and I have changed my responses: if it's a long pause, and then an accent, then I know the call is coming from another country (I am in Canada), if it's my cable service, I keep telling them "no thanks" . I have learned not to say "yes" because that word can be copied and applied to a scam where my voice says yes. We all have to learn to be vigilant and we have to do what you did, Sue, and that is to help someone in a vulnerable situation. You were her "guardian angel" that day. Good on you!
Sue Context is important. You saw an elderly lady at the craft store looking at gift cards while on speaker phone. She appeared on edge & was being told what to do by the person on the phone. You could clearly hear the individual bossing her about what to purchase. With just the above info I'm thinking scammer. Upon hearing an accent I would have been 99% positive it was a scam. Context is important. Ask yourself ''If the event occurred exactly as you recounted except the accent was French Canadian or a Southern Georgia drawl would you have intervened.?'' I would have. If she said she was speaking to her nephew about a gift card for his daughter, I would have been greatly relieved. This elderly lady did not say anything to aleviate your concern. What she told you is a classic con used by predators the world over. You are a good neighbor to your community💖
I think profiling is okay, as long as you are open-minded. It's about being observant, paying attention to context and applying life experience to your situation.
I flatter myself that I might have made a serious difference in that woman's life, but really, all I did was what anyone else would have done if they had been in my place. But it did make me feel as if I had done a good day's work. 😂
You did a very brave, instinctive action, Sue. I'm 100% sure that it was the scenario that prompted you to act - i.e. elderly woman standing in front of the gift cards rack being coerced to buy them by the person (of whatever nationality) on the phone. I'm hoping that I would have had the courage to do the same. Elderly people have to look out for each other - there are so many scammers around. One day, recently, my husband returned home alone in broad daylight. He is obviously in his 70s and was fumbling with his house keys. A "roofer" called out to him from the other side of the road and said he would quote to clean moss from the roof (when it didn't need doing). My husband told him that we have our own roofing contractors. This guy was very very persistent, but finally left. On leaving, he said "I hope you die of cancer". This shook us up somewhat, but we warned our neighbours as we had seen the van they were using, and got the name with a mobile phone number, but no proper trading address or premises when we looked it up on the internet. My motto, beware of roofers!! Also, get your keys ready before you get to your home.
It was situational. Don’t beat yourself up. You did good. You are good. The scammers count on you being to afraid to be a racist to speak up. Let’s not let them win. If TSA doesn’t profile us….im not gettin on a plane.
My formerly very bright mil had someone call and say she needed to give a credit card number; it was either Medicare or health insurance. She gave him her credit card number. After hanging up, she got nervous about it and called my husband. My husband immediately went to the bank. $150 had already been charged. My mil has dementia. At this stage, she is more absent-minded than out of touch. We had discussed not giving out information to unsolicied callers many times. I think she is on a hit list because all day long, her phone rings, and it is someone wanting to scam her. Her land line allows blocking numbers, but they just spoof another number. We have reported to the "do not call" website but that is a useless cost to the taxpayer because nothing ever gets done.
Perhaps your mother-in-law might want to change her phone number. I fear that the woman I spoke with will be in the same situation because that scammer was blowing up her phone the entire time we were talking. I know it's inconvenient for people to change their phone numbers - especially older people who may have had the same number for many years - but it beats the heck out of being harassed all day long by scam calls... Good luck with the situation - I wish you and your family the best. 😊💖
@suemeonyoutube Thank you very much. In our area, it seems to be the norm to get these calls all day long. I think she might have the same problem if she changes her number. With the Medicare enrollments happening now, the scammers use that to try and scam the elderly.
I saw a TH-camr baiting an American scammer with Medicare programs we hear advertised all the time. Medicare will never call you but some people don't know that.
It wasn't the accent alone, it was the context, the combination of confused elderly woman standing next to gift card stand being coached by man with certain accent. Suspecting something is amiss is a logical, realistic, practical conclusion and absolutely not a racist act. If it quacks like a duck...
It is the call of the sheets. All cats know and hear this everywhere in the world. My cat can be in a dead sleep downstairs and will hear me taking off my sheets and come running. PS my cold this morning as I listen is minus 18 celcius
Good job Sue! Not only for helping this lady but for getting the message out on TH-cam. There are so many new scams coming around. I can barely keep up. I was caught in one small one and I am so careful. I block all the phone numbers that come in that I do not knowhands-down.
One thing I've learned over the years is, NOTHING IS ACTUALLY FREE...as soon as I hear those words, I stop listening and move on...to me, there is always a gimmick behind those words of which I've fallen for in the past. As Judge Judy says, "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is." 😊
Oh, how exciting this news is! Hee hee feel like a child again. I love a good scam scam! I have decided scam scam is a term to describe when a scam gets busted!
I agree - she had no idea she was being deceived, and that's very troubling. And the fact that all the cashiers were seeing the very same thing I saw and not reacting at all was equally troubling. 🤔
U are right 15o My old friend was scam for thousands He was foreign Attentive Playing on her He needed to feed family He needed money to come to America to see her No clothes no luggage Family dying Had to use money This went on for yrs We tryed to tell her over and over It was evident I moved so don't know any more ..lost contact.. But again I'm 85 almost But I have learned and they come out of the woodwork Happy Holidays many Blessings
Sue, In my opinion, you saved the lady a bunch of money , and may have taught her a license . It doesn’t matter that you heard the accent . So, what ! It triggered you to rescue her ! Forget the,”Racist “ worries. Helping another person is a greater thing ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️
Hi Sue, I honestly don't think you need to worry about your conflict. The whole situation in its entirety put up spidey senses. If you had merely passed her without hearing any voice on the phone, you would not have been alerted. If you had heard ANY kind of accent or none on phone, you would have been alerted. You have thoroughly researched these scams, so you are obviously more attuned to them and wired for scammers now. That's a good thing. Just because it happened to be South Asian accent doesn't mean you are becoming bigoted at all. It could have been ANY accent, and you would have responded the same. Once again, because of the entire situation picture. Please don't beat yourself up over this. We have been forcefully fed that rampant racism is lurking in every corner. That's simply false and cruelly misleading. I thank you for helping the lady and putting out this message. Warm wishes to you and Oddi. ❤ ❤️✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦🙏🤗
I notice that young moms with kids need extra eyes. I've spotted a few almost leaving groceries or parcels behind, as their attention gets yanked hither n yon in a nanosecond. Or the lil darlin' tosses their stroller plush to the floor. Or a lady walks away from a cart, leaving her purse in the caddy. It's a good feeling to be even a silent momentary caretaker for another person. My lovely Gram would say that God puts us where we're needed, when we're needed.
At my house we get calls from our oldest grandson who needed money for bail. We tried to lead him on for a bit but finally just yelled at him. WE DON'T HAVE ANY GRANDCHILDREN!! This scammer hung up so quickly l almost got whiplash.
I get those calls, too. I usually let them ramble on and eventually ask them what on earth my mythical grandson (I've named him Hector) was doing driving a car full of cocaine when he's only 4 years old... I would never advise anyone to take up scambaiting, but it really is a lot fun. 😂
Remember Sue- according to all those how-the-human-brain-works seminars I sat through while I was teaching we react more and first to what we see. You saw an elderly woman who looked confused (at risk population) in front of a wall of gift cards (known to be used to defraud.)
Sue it's always better to be safe than sorry by using caution. Guess one could always say "I'll ring you back when you send me written confirmation of my win, thank you" and end the call.
I used to work at Walgreens. Every now and then someone would come up to the register with a gift card, usually confused about how they worked. I would ask them what they needed it for. One guy swore up and down he was about to win a Mercedes. I'm not sure if I ever got through to him.
We all know you are not prejudice to foreigners. Your guard went up for this situation, maybe with God’s help to save this poor woman. I just hope you got the message thru to her for future scammers on her phone. ❤️
Bless you for helping that women you over heard a scam , im a senior that had a scammer call telling me I one a lottery I never bought he said it was because I paid my utilities on time , it was just BS and yes he had a an aaccent , I told him I knew what he was trying to do and I threatened him , he hung up , I no longer answer a number I can't understand, thank you for you informative talks .Ruth from Washington state .
Good for you. Be careful. I get very official looking texts and emails too from the bank, aarp, etc that don't seem suspicious in their content. But because they are unsolicited subjects that don't pertain to me, but are written to me personally, ( ie, regarding a loan, which i don't have ) make me know they are SPAM.
Ahh Audie, my Oliver loves bedding changing day. He hops on the minute the clean sheet goes on. He stays put as the top sheet, blankets and comforter go on. Eventually he crawls out, he loves it.
It wasn't just the accent. It was the combination of accent, tone of voice, old person being battered via a phone call. Plus you listen to scam the scammer videos (guy with the blue hair). We've all been exposed to realities of these scammers and the reality is, they usually have an accent that is unmistakable. If all scammers talked like an ol cow poke, we would react to a cow poke accent the same we react to the typical scammer accent. 😂 good times!
You heard the voice and asked the lady questions, you did a good thing and protected a neighbor! Sue give your self a pat on the back and say “GOOD GIRL!”
Hi Sue and Audie! As the Caucasian mother of an Asian child (who is now an adult), I am very tuned in to racist comments and behaviors. I did not detect anything of the kind when I was listening to your video. Perhaps it’s because I know you well enough to understand where you were coming from. When you heard the conversation the lady in the store was having, you relied on your powers of discernment to make a judgment on what you should do. Don’t beat yourself up, you did a very good thing. Most people “mind their own business” often even if it’s to the detriment of others but you did a noble thing. I’ve watched your videos on scammers and the experience you shared was very useful to me when I recently received a ridiculous scam email attempting to blackmail me for money. I will send it to you so you can have a good laugh. Take care, see you tomorrow morning! Much love from Tammy & Miss Lulu. ❤️🐈⬛
Well done Sue, beating the scammers. I have to wait till feeding time to change my bed and do it at double speed or I have 4 fur balls in my way. Have a great day.
Audie used to hover around at bed-making time, but the novelty of that has long since worn off. Now he waits for bed-changing day. I always open the blinds first and the sun pours in on the naked bed... What cat could resist that? 😹
@ These days I can’t even go upstairs to the loo without Magnus accosting me, he screams and demands I follow him to the bed to lay down and let him stretch out on me, if I don’t have time I get a bite in the ankle 😂, They all compete at night for the space next to my head except him, he just claims me. The lives of animal lovers 🤪
Well done for being on the ball. In spite of lots of publicity people are still taken in by scammers. You're not being racist about the scammer's accent, you're just being practical. In the UK many scammers are east European, African or Indian/Pakistani. That's not a racist remark, it's factual, there are many scammer call centres in those countries. Many of the scams here revolve around telling the victim that the caller is the police and the victim's bank account has been compromised. The victim is instructed to move their money into a different account that the "police" has access to for "safety" reasons. The rest you can guess. I've had many scam phone calls, fortunately I recognise them and simply put the phone down
I agree. And at the time, I didn't have the objectivity to see how intimidating I must have been. Now that I can look back on it, I realize I need to stand in front of a mirror and practice a kinder and gentler approach. 😁
‘Tiss the season-even for scammers. You did a great thing. Young or old can get caught up in “if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.” And, most of us know,”you can’t judge a book by its cover “. Some “covers “ however, have been used and abused-that’s how we gained our knowledge. I don’t see racism involved. I see a woman that has all her facilitates and shared her knowledge and wisdom. And kindness. Happy Holidays to all.
Wow, Sue!❤ That was such a selfless act of service to the elderly. Yes, I, too would have to adventure inward for jumping to conclusions.❤ You are Worthy, Sue.❤
It was hardly that - I was just fortunate enough to be on hand to intervene. I think anyone would have done the same. But thanks so much for thinking so well of me. 😁💖
There are so many scams, another is the one that you are phoned and told you have won a holiday, but you need to pay insurance. That people fall for it, they phone back and say do you wish an upgrade on your non existent holiday, and then want more money.
I haven't encountered that one yet... My neighbor, Jane, gets package delivery notifications (that's another one I haven't personally seen), and I have a file folder full of scam notifications claiming to be PayPal, Amazon, Walmart, etc... It's out of control. 😲
@@suemeonyoutube I know, these Spam emails are out of control. If the package notifications are texts, or any other Spam texts, forward the Spam contents & number to 7726 (SPAM) then block the number.
Good job Sue. They tried to get my dad with the "Grandfather" scheme. Thankfully, the manager at the grocery store stopped him when he was trying to purchase the gift cards. He was 90 years old at the time. Bless you for helping her!
There's a special place in hell for someone who would do that to a 90-year-old man. I know that scam - the scammers tell the grandparent that their grandchild is in jail, or has been in an accident... That's hideous! Bad enough to steal, but to frighten someone out of their wits, too? Despicable. 😠
Sue: you're a good citizen and a very good person. You handled the situation impeccably. The other thing I want to say is that this motivates me to speak to elder friends about these dangers and also for me to try to be more focused and visually alert in stores, etc. and potentially assist someone someday. Best wishes!
Good Morning Sue 😘 excellent job I’m happy you were there at the right time you were her Guardian Angel 👼🙏🏽 I would’ve done the same thing it’s a shame our older loved ones have this crap 💩 of evil to deal with! You’re a Smart Strong Woman 👌🏽and Sue you look Great what you’re doing is working for you and I like the hair color change 😘. Stay warm out there I know the feeling I live Up State NY. 😎 ✌🏽🫶
Thank you. I have no doubt that everyone in our TH-cam community would have done the same thing if they saw what I saw. The hair color, by the way, is just my natural color with no pink or red added. 😂 PS - I've been to upstate NY. Our winters here in southern Pennsylvania are an absolute joke compared to yours. So you stay warm, too! 😊🥶
Good afternoon Sue and Audie. Looking forward to your video as always. My little cat Tia loved when I changed my bedding, the minute the fresh bedding was on the bed she jumped up and rolled around .I miss her dearly, but I catsit my daughter's cat Ruby, so I am not completely catless. Have a great weekend, hugs to bedhugger, Audie 😊
That sounds so cute! 😻😻😻 Audie seems to prefer rolling around on a naked mattress. It must seem like a giant expanse of bed, all for a cat to enjoy... 😹
I miss my last 2 boys, (unwanted Cornish rex brothers from same litter). We used to play "pushy feet." They would get under the clean fitted sheet, roll onto their backs and put their long back feet up and we would push them. Then they would run to another spot and do it again. Cats, how did we live without them?
A scammer tried to con my 90 year old aunt into revealing her bank account number. He chose the wrong woman to pull that on. She gave him an earful, hung up and he never called back. She was a feisty woman, bless her. She lived to 100 years old and was clear headed to the end ❤
I'm not good or special, but I always keep an eye on people in my comnunity, and if I can help, I do it. And I think many people do it, naturally, because it's a very good feeling when it happens. Love your channel ❤ I wanted to add that when travelling in the USA I noticed people are very protective with turists and very happy to chat and be helpful ❤️
I think most of us are just average folks trying to do the right thing. I'm not some paragon of virtue, either, but I do need to feel good about myself and how could I do that if I close my eyes to someone in trouble? And on behalf of all my fellow Americans, thank you for the kind words about our citizens, and I truly hope you enjoy your time in our country. 😊💖
I don't think you reacted to just the accent, it was the whole situation. It was unlikely to have been her gynecologist! I've no idea what a 'salvation accent' is but I do know you are a very quick thinker recognised immediately what was going on a did what you could to stop it. I think that make you a combination of Miss Marple and superwoman, so well done you. Don't overthink it. I do think the stores should be aware of this scam and protect their customers if they can.
Yes, they will. And that poor old dear will be flooded with phone calls now. But that part of the problem will need to be addressed by her family. Hopefully they will persuade her to change her number and not engage with these monsters in the future. 😊
🌟 *Sue, you are a bona fide hero! ❤ Thank you for saving that lady!* 🌟 Have you seen any videos on the channel called “Scammer Payback”? They go after these horrible criminals.
Good Job Sue! I almost got scammed because I got a text from USPS about an amount I owed on shipping, but I KNOW that USPS will never contact you via phone, and they don't ask you to pay for extra on any shipping! But it was late at night and I wasn't quite awake - and I ship all the time for a personal business. Luckily I stopped to think. If you get any texts asking for money, you don't need to respond to it right away. let it sit and go back to it when you're aware and have researched it.
My neighbor, Jane, gets those package delivery emails all the time. Jane is way too clever for them, but they are persistent... 😂 I do worry, though - Jane is getting older and the scammers are getting more creative. 🤔
80% situational... and 20% judgemental racist thinking, in my opinion. I understand this dilemma and struggle with the same truths for myself. Human nature is part of this dynamic and ALL of us prejudge on our 1st impressions. Some of it is just what we are "comfortable" with and our situational awareness IQ. You have a deep sense of justice for right and wrong. I admire "little miss rambo" people like me. The nickname came from my mother and the fight came from my father. You did good, thank you for stepping into that woman's life and helping her.
Had the elderly lady not appeared confused and concerned the voice on the other end would not have been a problem. Sue, you added 2 and 2 and made 4. Bravo
Audie may be a naughty boy, but not a bad cat. I love all my cats, although they have so many different personalities and I know you do love and take care of him.
Two of my three kitties will get up on the refrigerator. Behati is my big 23 lb boy, and Ocean is my girl that get up there. I also have Miss Texas. They OWN the house LOL!
Thank goodness you were at the right place at the right time! Not only did you prevent her from being scammed and possibly giving away the little money she had left, but you have helped hundreds of others by sharing this story. Every year these scammers become more brazen, and more often than not they’re calling from overseas, so it is damn near impossible to find and prosecute them. You WERE NOT being racially insensitive, you, to quote the cranky old Marine, were using Situational Awareness. Good for you!
My beloved dachshunds always let us know that we live in a grace and favor home. If they decide to withdraw their grace and favor, we are out on our ears.
Sue, you need to rely upon your intuition and not worry about who may be hurt if you are wrong. It is far better to be safe than sorry. Your reticence is what scammers rely upon and take advantage of.
In the UK if I see an asian person getting on a bus or train, wearing a backpack, I instinctively wait for the next bus. I agree it is wrong to have those thoughts, but as you say they have pee ed too many times in the pool. Well done for helping the lady in the queue, I suspect the manager will do nothing as it is job to sell not stopping a sale.
I have two friends who were scammed for big bucks! One was the grandson scam and she gave $4000. 😢 The other had a scammer who required her to go to her bank to withdraw thousands. Luckily the banker knew her and stopped the action. She was being threatened and because she was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s she almost fell for the scam. I’m not sure if she actually got caught previously by the scammer. So sad that old folks are being targeted.
It was more than the voice. The lady was puzzled. You reacted to that: the expression on her face, and she was unsure and thus was taking a lot of time choosing. Do we call that metadata?
Sue, why couldn't you have been behind me this past summer. when I was buying Nike cards...They got $1,500 from me. I thought I paid attention to all the warnings, but they scared the hell out of me and I swear that it might have been different if I hadn't heard them say, "amazon". Anyway, thank goodness you did what you did!!
You followed your intuition and you were correct. I live in NYC to me everyone is a scammer, no race, no religion, no gender, no age, no nationality, no neighbor escapes my suspicion. That was wonderful you stepped in. That woman could have lost a lot of money.
Ask a store's manager for advice on how to calmly approach someone. As I man, I would not have approached her. I would have interrupted a clerk and asked for immediate help.
I never engage with them from my own phone or my own email accounts. But I do keep a cheap 'burner' phone and a few gmail addresses, so yeah, I play with them, too. 😉
Sue, I am a bit older than you - but dear WE are "elderly" we are just competent elderly - LOL. I do the same thing, call people are likely younger than me "old people". I got that call from Publisher's Clearing House a few years ago, on my landline, they insisted I call them back on my cell - I refused. They told me which store I had to go to in order to purchase the cards. They said their people were waiting just 10 minutes away with the balloons and the cameras. The idiot then said he was in Blue Springs, which is 120 miles away from me. No way they could get to my house in 10 minutes. I told them I had to go to the bathroom and get dressed, he expected me to stay on the phone with him and I said like hell you are not going to the bathroom with me. He was supposed to call me back - of course he did not. They are very upbeat and describe what we have seen on TV well. I hope there is a special place in a HOT land down under for these people, preying on easily influenced people to make money. Good for you for stepping up and butting in to save that woman. Here is the thing, why do older people seem to think they cannot say NO and have to do what other's tell them, especially when it doesn't make sense. I understand the lure of a new car, I was in desperate need of money when they called, but my common sense told me it could not be authentic.
That bright yellow looks good on you, like sunshine! Audie is on the fridge because warm air rises & there's probably a quiet motor humming at an agreeable resonance to boot. Thanks for meddling in her business like an intruding angel. You SAW that old lady in danger, but old ladies are particularly invisible to a lot of people.
Good morning Sue , and all . I am sipping my coffee ☕️. God bless you for helping to stop the lady from being scammed .Have a blessed Weekend ❤💚🎄🎅🤶🧑🎄❤️💚☃️
Audie on the bed sheet reminded me of my (dear departed) cat Riley, who I had to distract when I wanted to change the sheets so that I could get past the top sheet and blanket before he took over the bed. Something about a fresh clean sheet is the most wonderful thing to them. Love every minute!
Thank you. The truth is I wish I handled the situation a little more delicately, but I am so grateful that I was at that checkout line at just the right time. 😊
Sue, what separates us from the animals is (not just our ability to accessorize) but our ability to care for another, including the most vulnerable. One of my best friends works at the local post office .... since Canada Post got into the business of wiring money a few years back ... she has seen so so many (mostly older) folks being scammed. Wiring money to their boyfriend or girlfriend whom they've never met etc. She has a good heart like you and tries asking them gently probing questions about where the money is being sent. Many have lost everything to the scammers. Some come in weekly or monthly and have RECORD BOOKS of all the transactions they are sending not only to the person (scammer) but also their family members. To make a long story short, the clerks do try to help but at the end of the day it's up to the person. And do we think a huge corporation like Canada Post is going to actively try to stop people from wiring money EVEN WHEN THEY KNOW it's a scam? Not a chance. They are making millions and they don't give a damn who is being scammed. Thank God for people like you, Sue.
I don't think it was so much the accent alone as the whole situation. In context an elderly woman obviously being directed by phone to purchase gift cards and lie about it. Those things alone throw the red flags.❤
Audie preventing the changing of bed linen. How funny, my three are exactly the same; one, two or all three of them. It happens in the morning as well when trying to smooth the bottom sheet and replace the duvet!! Same with my Saturday newspaper if I lay some of the pages on the settee, where I read it, one cat in particular will always come and park his bottom on it so I can pick it up again!!!
I swear at them. My step-father was a world class cusser, so I just repeat every colorful phrase that ever came out of his mouth when he stubbed his toe or hit his finger with a hammer. 😂

@@MadameRobinson Sadly, the scamming has become an epidemic in India.
@@ibelieveinangelsyesido7436 exactly!
Thank you for helping that lady not be scammed. This nonsense happens to my mother all the time and every time it's a new adventure trying to convince her she's getting nothing. They're trying to shaft her out of money
They all are the scam man of India. Thy all sound like the same man.
I prevent scams by NEVER answering my phone, that's how I put a stop to it.
I only answer calls programed into my phone, otherwise they have to leave a message. Saves lots of time.
It's worse when they connect to a computer. My Pop was in the middle of a scam and I was able to stop it. We got lucky.
We all have to learn to be vigilant and we have to do what you did, Sue,
and that is to help someone in a vulnerable situation. You were her "guardian angel" that day. Good on you!
I can usually tell when the voice sounds like someone from India and the same their name is Dave..
@@carolball5764they ALWAYS have English names. Another giveaway.
I no longer answer my landline unless I know the name or number. I get 8-14 fake calls per day.
Sue Context is important.
You saw an elderly lady at the craft store looking at gift cards while on speaker phone. She appeared on edge & was being told what to do by the person on the phone. You could clearly hear the individual bossing her about what to purchase.
With just the above info I'm thinking scammer.
Upon hearing an
accent I would have been 99% positive it was a scam.
Context is important.
Ask yourself ''If the event occurred exactly as you recounted except the accent was French Canadian or a Southern Georgia drawl would you have intervened.?''
I would have.
I agree. Subconscious context clues were at work here, as opposed to bias.
That's what I call a "hero intervention". Good job Sue !
I flatter myself that I might have made a serious difference in that woman's life, but really, all I did was what anyone else would have done if they had been in my place. But it did make me feel as if I had done a good day's work. 😂
@@suemeonyoutube Way to go, Super Sue!
It's always a good idea to remind us that there are unscrupulous people out there waiting to take advantage of vulnerable people . Thanks Sue.
This guy was very very persistent, but
finally left.
Wow! What a hateful thing to say to your husband. I'm glad there was no further engagement,.
Well done for stopping that lady. Let’s hope when they called back she didn’t let them fool her to do it again, especially as he was persistent.
It was situational. Don’t beat yourself up. You did good. You are good. The scammers count on you being to afraid to be a racist to speak up. Let’s not let them win. If TSA doesn’t profile us….im not gettin on a plane.
They COULD have come from anywhere, but the vast majority are coming out of SE Asia and Nigeria. It ain’t “racist” to know that fact!!
True. And it's very sad that a few bad apples are dragging everyone else down with them. 😢
@@suemeonyoutube Scammers can also buy lists of people who were scammed previously by other scammers.
Exactly!
It is the call of the sheets. All cats know and hear this everywhere in the world. My cat can be in a dead sleep downstairs and will hear me taking off my sheets and come running. PS my cold this morning as I listen is minus 18 celcius

This is so true - excellent point!
Sue it's always better to be safe than sorry by using caution. Guess one could always say "I'll ring you back when you send me written confirmation of my win, thank you" and end the call.
You did a good thing! Be proud!

If you get any texts asking for money, you don't need to respond to it right away. let it sit and go back to it when you're aware and have researched it.
My neighbor, Jane, gets those package delivery emails all the time. Jane is way too clever for them, but they are persistent... 😂
I do worry, though - Jane is getting older and the scammers are getting more creative. 🤔
Got my coffee
Me, too! ☕😊
80% situational... and
20% judgemental racist thinking, in my opinion.
Bravo
The situation checked all the boxes, you couldn't have thought any other way about it. Yes, the pool has been soiled.
Your mistake was in referring to it as "your"house. It would appear that it's Audie's house, and you are "employed" there.
But he is pretty cute "bad cat"...lol. So kind of you to step in to help that woman.
On your recommendation, I watched a lot of Atomic Shrimp last week- wonderful! One almost feels sorry for the scammers!
His weird stuff in a can videos are also funny.
Good Morning Sue
Good morning! 😊
Ohhh Sue, It dependant on the accent you hear there many others too. That's just one. I understand exactly how you feel.
See a crime, report a crime. We have to look after each other. Senior citizens are targets.
Exactly! 😊
Why wouldn't she block the incoming number of the scammer.
Good morning Sue and Audie! Have a blessed day. TY for stopping that scam. You were that lady's guardian angel. 😊🤗🥰😻
Thank you - same to you! 😊😸💖
❤ Your gift card wisdom is a blessing to those receive. 😊
I'd like to think so. And I know the money has come in very handy a few times, so I'm sticking with this particular gift-giving strategy. 😉
You followed your intuition and you were correct. I live in NYC to me everyone is a scammer, no race, no religion, no gender, no age, no nationality, no neighbor escapes my suspicion. That was wonderful you stepped in. That woman could have lost a lot of money.
Thank You!!!
Sterotypes are based upon odds.
Ask a store's manager for advice on how to calmly approach someone. As I man, I would not have approached her. I would have interrupted a clerk and asked for immediate help.
Sometimes when I get a scam call, I’ll plug my nose so my voice sounds different and I’ll waste their time for a little bit. 🤭
I never engage with them from my own phone or my own email accounts. But I do keep a cheap 'burner' phone and a few gmail addresses, so yeah, I play with them, too. 😉
@ Kitboga uses virtual machines on his computer to get in their systems and delete their files. It’s so funny.
God bless you for helping to stop the lady from being scammed .Have a blessed Weekend
❤💚🎄🎅🤶🧑🎄❤️💚☃️
Thank you. I was just fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. 😊
@ ❤️
Audie on the bed sheet reminded me of my (dear departed) cat Riley, who I had to distract when I wanted to change the sheets so that I could get past the top sheet and blanket before he took over the bed. Something about a fresh clean sheet is the most wonderful thing to them. Love every minute!
Well done you😮
I send scammers an angry message back & tell them they are low life, et etc & I tell them they have been BLOCKED & REPORTED!
I swear at them. My step-father was a world class cusser, so I just repeat every colorful phrase that ever came out of his mouth when he stubbed his toe or hit his finger with a hammer. 😂
