It's because he's not accompanying, he's a duo partner. And Richter is a phenomenal pianist for Schubert. Sadly, most Schubert lieder these days are "accompanied," with the central focal point on the voice and not on the duet.
First hearing of this song. To think that only 18 months ago I couldn't identify a single Franz Schubert song, except for Ave Maria. Did Elvis ever meet Dietrich, when he was stationed in W. Germany?
What you failed to see in my comment is that I did not criticize Fischer-Dieskau's "sensitivity" to Schubert's music. I think he understands very well the underlying message that Schubert tried to convey in his lieder. He is good enough that he could live on singing lieder concerts only, which is practically impossible today. That doesn't mean he's flawless, or that no one can do better than him. Bostridge or Wunderlich would be modest about it, but surely wouldn't laugh at my comment...
I have to agree with you, Richard. While I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I think that both Bostridge and Terfel would have a laugh about such a comment. The things @Yanic NonDisclosed 'misses' in D F-D are some of the things he is praised for. Subjective... ABSOLUTELY... but I think the majority of voices speak stronger than Yanic's.
Nie wiem o czym to.. i w ogóle.. Ale lubię czasem w zaciszu czterech ścian wysłuchać niecodziennej aczkolwiek jakże wspaniałej muzyki. I po prawdzie pisząc, to bardziej mi przypadł do gustu ten utwór Schubert - Serenade, niż prezentowany wyżej. Może to kwestia gustu, a może innego powodu.
Schubert would have loved to work with Dieter if possible :-) I hope that this will be sufficient enough to convince Yanic?? But perhaps Yanics hearing is better or different in his own way, and he can hear things that we don't?? But I have to agree on your comment Art Collectir,as I think you have a strong point in what you say,as indeed he is amazing in D F-D(but then again,we baritone's are often lol)
@Yanic NonDisclosed: Is that a joke or is that comment serious of yours?? Please don't tell me that you ment that seriously, as if it is, even Ian Bostridge himself would laugh at you and not with you! I wish you well !! Music is feeling!!!
Maybe I am, who knows. I have studied and sang Schubert for most of my bachelor's degree, worked with musicians much better than I am who also specialized in that repertoire. Doesn't make me an expert, though anyone who studied his repertoire, teachings, letters, knows Schubert wasn't too fond on "portamenti"... And it is discouraged in todays' teachings as out of style. It's like in the 50s when they were singing Donizetti in German because it was sung in Berlin... Doesn't mean it makes sense..
You're lucky... I can't stand his last century approach to singing... It is SO square... So percussive... He understands the music very well in my opinion, but he just can't reproduce a lot of subtleties of the text like a Bostridge, a Terfel, a Wunderlich would... anyway, very subjective ;)
Incredibile, inarrivabili!
One of the greatest singers of all time. His artistry is simply unmatched along with his total mastery of breath and technique! Simply outstanding!
j'adore le lied
Stunning! A collaboration made in heaven!
Richter and Fischer-Deiskau make compositions which don't usually particularly affect me much deeply touching and beautiful; they are suberb!
They are great.
I like Fisher-Dieskau's sound. He is my favourite light-baritone!
Doesn't get any better!
Beautiful
Artistic giants.
SUPERBISSIM
Great comment! So true!

Where can I find this recording?
I wonder if God listens to this before He goes to bed at night.

No German text !

Excuse me, what makes absolutely no sense is to sing opera in a language that most of the audience don't understand.
