Great ex All Blacks lock and captain Colin Meads was asked to host a speaking tour around SA along with Frik in the 1980’s. Frik was the tour guide who drove them round according to Colin Meads, they had a ball. Would have given anything to hear their talks, both of them entertaining speakers, hilarious and quick with the wit.
@@SK-jp3hqCricket is a completely different game. Obviously modern tactics would destroy old teams. If old players had today’s technology and training they may or may not have been better. In cricket there’s little tactics, if you can hit 6s 100 years ago, you can probably do it again
That tackle, it has rightly been immortalized as the paragon of all tackles. Utterly sublime: The sheer level and variety of subtle skills required to dislocate your unsuspecting opponent's jaw, force him to swallow his tongue, while sharply wrenching his neck, backed up simultaneously with a cracking roundhouse punch from behind to the cheekbone - ALL EXECUTED IN MID-AIR ... I mean, just tell me how that is not pure ballet. Indeed, and with no disrespect whatsoever to ballet, such a tackle is truly a still nobler art form, in that you couldn't hope to choreograph it. Such is the precious rarity of the spontaneous, the instinctive.
Oom Frik jy was my kinderjare held en is steeds.
Will never see a Frik du Preez or Colin Meads again. Hard as nails, and Oom Frik was at his best when he was dropped for a game, Both characters off the field.
As a person he is a great gentleman as a rugby player he is and will be the best lock/flank that the world has seen, I was very privileged to play against him as s under 19
Colin Meads won All Black of the Century in what was considered a "landslide victory" and is considered to be the greatest forward in New Zealand rugby...... Surely he's as good as Frik?
He was my Sport officer at School of Technical training in Littleton/Verwoerdburg. I even exercised with him as both of us was 6 ft five.Although I only played under twenty.
I read somewhere that Frik, Colin Meads and Willie John McBride did a speaking tour in SA, several years back. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall when they got together to swap stories!
Thanks mate. I love that bit about Frik maybe having one to many and falling asleep, leaving Meads and McBride to discuss whether they should do him in for all times he'd belted them! Ahhh the good old days....

(Hannes scored 16 tries on the Boks' 13 match tour of Australia, including 5 in his first match in the green and gold jersey). Frik played his last 3 test matches on this tour, all told he scored 11 points (1 try -- against the Lions in Pretoria in 1968 -- 1 conversion, 2 penalty goals) for the Boks in 38 tests between 1961 and 1971. His 38 tests was a record for SA until equaled by Jan Ellis against the All Blacks at Durban in 1976. In the clip that culminates with Piet Visagie's great solo try at Ellispark, Frik is #5, and his Northerns teammates on that day were Johan Spies (#4), Mof Myburgh (#1) and Piston van Wyk (#2). As a New Zealander I enjoy these tributes to past, great Springboks. It would be good if someone did the same for past All Blacks. But I think you do ALL Springboks both past and present a great disservice by finishing each bio with the photo of Frik punching Chris Laidlaw which can only be described as pure thuggery. Chris was badly concussed from this. Of course, we have had our share of dirty players. Colin Meads maimed an Australian halfback through dirty play so badly he never played rugby again. But to use this photo as if this epitomises the best of South African rugby when you would have countless many other wonderful ones is a very poor choice.
You don't understand that photo mate. If you look at the photo, it looks like a punch. If you look at the footage in real time, you can clearly see that it is a tackle he made on Laidlaw, where Frik tackled him around his upper body and his left hand was on his collar. He didn't punch him, his hand was clenching his collar. To think that South Africans celebrate thuggery is a poorer choice...
