I also still rip my qav 250 and 180s.. LOVE them old frames and its funny it's ezer for me to build one of these than all this new ish.. yes cleanflight ftw...
This was absolutely hilarious. The new kids have no idea the world of hurt we endured back then just to hover for a moment before smashing everything and blaming it on a slipped magnet :-D. You should have gone back further to the Blue Mystery or Blue Series or whatever ESC's with the first version of SimonK with the wires soldered to the frikin MCU. Gosh we were just straight nerds back then. I cannot believe I forgot how awful it was.
It's friggin' amazing how far we've come in such a short time! Think of ANY other tech and go back only 4 years and it's not even close to how far we've come! Whoa! Lol
Even with this video being 4 years old (making this feel even more like a throw back). I love these "How it started videos"! Looking forward to more ;)
"Do a Roll" crunch :) this video is pure gold. seeing the OG fpv qwad stuff from way back (not even that long ago). and the crazy stuff we do to make things work. i'm so happy to be away from heli's, and the sadness of a boomstrike or linkage popping off, or heaven forbid you graze a leaf, as your baby does the most violent chicken dance into pieces. Qwads in recent years take so much punishment, and just keep going, usually with little to no repairs, and most can easily be handled in the field. or just pull out another one and keep flying (they are so compact). unlike trying to pack a 60class nitro heli, across the back seat of your car.
There's nothing wrong with F1 naze32 boards, all my miniquads use those and I just bought another for my next build, perfectly adequate for the job. imo the biggest advances/improvements for the flying experience were 4S power, active braking in blheli, more powerful motors (2205/2206) and 3-bladed props. oh yeah, and purpose-built fpv cameras that don't black everything out when you look at the sunset...
I just pulled my last Naze32 out of a frame last week and replaced it with an F4. I'm going to put it in a wing now as a flight stabilizer. There's still some life in those old things. I've got 2 CC3Ds that are going to become flight stabilizers for Flite Test foamies.
Agreed, but a biiig improvement is also the software (betaflight etc), which to a large part still is applicable to the naze. It's only the most recent releases that don't support F1 boards anymore.
I've only been flying fpv for a couple of weeks now and after seeing this episode it amazes me how fast the technology has changed the hobby. As always great episode guys keep smashing it 👊
this is awesome! I was just explaining to someone the other day how different things are now then they were "back in the day" when I was ussing a CC3D and Simon K. no active breaking, no stability at low throttle. crazy! nice to see these topics talked about. some people would just never know.
You make me feel old and I'm only 17! I started about 4 years ago and what you built there was my dream setup back then. I could only afford the cheapest emax nighthawk 250. It's amazing how far this hobby has come within a few years.
Yessssss! Great stuff, guys!! That one guy with that flying thing was the best part of the video. I know you guys just touched on this kind of posting, but another idea might be to do a competition of building up old frames with new gear. ZMR250 with 2306 motors and f7 fc? Not sure... but maybe something along those lines. Thanks for the fun video. You picked some awesome pilots to feature!!!
Awesome video guys, I started off with a QAV 250 clone in 2015 from Ebay after watching Charpu-fpv's Left behind video, I remember building it and thinking it was amazing to fly a quad-copter and having a great time, I moved onto a 4s QAV-X running 2600kv motors and I thought I was gonna go to the moon the difference was huge (still run that quad today with a different FC hahah) Great vid guys was nice to see a little glimpse into the older gear and remembering how far we've come in 3 or so years.
This brought back so many memories. I absolutely loved it. I started trying to build a quad in late 2014 but didn't get it finished until early 2015. The funniest part to me besides the afro programer (which I still have for some crazy reason) was that you guys said the NAZE32 was the old flight controller. I still think of it as the revolutionary flight controller that pulled us out of the dark ages. No more 8 bit stuff and multiwii. The modern area arrived in the form of the NAZE32 6DOF. I'm amazed how fast the hobby has changed. I'm only 33 years old so it's not like I'm that old...right?
I started with Crius AIO and MegapirateNg or Multiwii. Kids these days will never know, the struggle was real back in the day. Expensive parts, 2 month wait times for parts from china. Very few people were doing it so there were no forums for help. Every time I plug into Betaflight I thank the quad gods for the easy plug and play of today! Great episode! Can't wait to see what's coming in the future for our hobby.
My retro quad was an Arris X Speed with baby beast v2 2150kv motors and 12a Afro ESCs. I had a Naze 32 and a Turnigy 2200mah 3s 20c battery. Also had 5030 props and the old $100 box goggles setup from hobbyking. Absolute ripper😂
Man, this takes me back to my first foray into drones in 2015. It didn't last long before I found other shit that interested me more like 3d printing which actually eventually got me back into drones and the holy grail of FPV and betaflight! all hail FPV!
Hot glue to get some angle on the fpv... that takes me back... 3 years or so! It seems an age ago and it is in terms of the equipment but it just goes to show how new this hobby is. Things have changed so much but this is only a few years back! The only thing is you used modern goggles and vrx, you should try this using a pair of Boscam GS920 AIO or some homemade ski mask goggles!
Funny reminder watching this, I started with the old emax nighthawk, with emax 2204s,some random baseflight fc, 12a escs, a board cam and vtx with dipswitchds and a d4rii on 3s. flew like crap as you have proved. Great vid guys.
Iv just gone from a black out to a newer one and omg the difference. My previous quad was one made from square frame aluminum with massive gutless motors. Crazy how much it's changed
Hahaha that was awesome. I remember my first qwad it was a QAV210 copy (had no idea at the time) it had a openpilot cc3d board (then upgraded to a naz32), a pdb, 12amp esc's, tarot motors with 4" bi-blade props. On a 3s battery.
I still have one of these retro quads :D with naze32, cleanflight, no camera tilt and a ZMR250 frame :) I'm wondering if it still flies. Good memories. Where can I get a bottle of anti latency fluid?
This episode is amazing! I got out of the hobby right around this time and just recently came back. I have a pile of Rotor Geek 12 amps still sitting new in the package along with the esc flasher :)
Love this guys. Been working too much. Great video and fun to see all the "cutting edge tech" like those fancy PDB's... I feel like I've got even older sh1t on my shelves. :). "Do a roll!" Hahahahahahahahahaha
Been waiting for this one.... funny how all my stuff from 3-5yrs back is called Retro. I fly airplanes at the field older than all you guys, and they are still considered cool. Man the FPV drone part of the hobby moves at light speed. Now if my quads are more than 6 months old, I should just toss em in the can and buy new stuff.

This is awesome! Reminded me of flashing my very first ESCs in 2014 and having to use the USB programmer thing. Good time tho. I still have my Blackout with Naze32 sitting somewhere. I actually want to rebuild it.
Honestly, I started my venture into FPV just a few months ago with used quads from ebay with old PDBs and flight controllers like the naze32 rev5 and CC3D. It took a lot of learning and tweaking the firmware until they flew well but then they ended up being my favourites. I caught myself reaching for the old used quad more often than for the brand new gear in the end. Started with 3S lipos but went to 4S pretty quickly being lucky though that the old motors could handle 4S. I think starting on used old gear is one pretty good way to get in to the hobby. Breaking thinks is not as expensive and the learning-curve is pretty steep. The used motors can be a pain though, but that way I learned how to balance them reasonably well.
No arduino.. No minum osd... And the list goes on. Man they let yall off easy lol. I still have all the old GUI's, and bins full of ancient artifacts. Those were the days, great episode!
It's crazy to see how far it's come. I built a Charpu edition QAV250 like 3 years ago that had an integrated TBS OSD and that shit was state of the art back then lol. Step up and step down regulators to power everything, oh fun times.
Lol that last 15 seconds... amazing! I started on a second hand build with a CC3D, ECSc with banana plugs and huge ass motors on a 500-ish mm frame. Flew it twice. Never again with the old stuff. I am tempted to rebuild that frame with modern parts tho... could be an interesting cruiser.
OMG you built what I was flying until recently right down to the sunnysky motors (the board camera didn't stick around for long though, not good :-)) I upgraded that frame 6 times.
I've been building since 2004. This was before fpv stacks. I had the Silverlit X-UFO with mechanical gyros. I also had a Draganflyer IV brushed motors. I could only get parts from Gemany, China and Japan. What they're flying here is more 2009-2012.

Welcome to the world all the OGs lived in and emerged from. Lol. Loved this
I still fly my O.G. QAV 250 from time to time. Lol
I shoulda done my homework I just ordered a qav250 😭😭😭
I also still rip my qav 250 and 180s.. LOVE them old frames and its funny it's ezer for me to build one of these than all this new ish.. yes cleanflight ftw...
Funny thing my f1s still FLY WELL LMFAO
@@MadMack u will love it!
This episode is so historic- was a blast to see Bot and Cricket get their hands on this gear!
Zoe FPV i would like to see what 3d was in its early stage lol............nudge nudge, cof cof, lol hint hint.

Yup lol
And to think Charpu built and tuned these and still flew them better than most, if not all fpv pilots we have today!!!!!!!
Now this brings back memories!😜 Funny to see how they build those OG Kwads!👍You should have gave them a KK board!
I absolutely loved this episode! So many memories!! :)
X Hover I totally agree! After going through some early Hobbyking junk frames, the MXP230 was my first real frame. I loved that quad.
Even with this video being 4 years old (making this feel even more like a throw back).
I love these "How it started videos"! Looking forward to more ;)

I like that Tommy gave them all the tips and tricks that we all had to learn as we built, but kept them on track to using vintage tactics haha

Yup, a lot of work by a lot of people has improved everything immensely, well done everyone involved in making things better!
Gotta give props to all the writers of all the code we use today to fly so smoothly and easily. That ending had me crackin up! hahaha
and not forgetting that stuff wasn't cheap!
Best Rotor Riot episode ever
