Hana was my favorite women's tennis player to watch back then because when she was on, her shots were magical. She should have won more slams than she did, but Martina and Chris were just more technically and mentally sound more of the time even though I feel that Hana was more gifted than both of them. Just shows that mental strength is such a huge part of the game. Nonetheless, Hana had an amazing career and I'm grateful I got to see her play.
I remember watching this almost 43 years ago, Wendy was almost favourite to win after beating Martina the day before in straight sets with a series of back hand chip and cross court shots., however on the day Wendy looked completely lost until a very late charge, due to some good play from her and also some errors from Hana, the very last game sits in my memory very well, Hana getting two let cords when the ball just dropped over from hitting the top of the tape, the second at 1.02.35 , Wendy hit what would have been a clear winner but Hana just got the racquet on it and the ball just drops over the net after hitting the top of the tape, at 15- 30 and would have made it 15 - 40 one wonders had Turnbull won the point and game and sent it to a tie breaker maybe we could have had a third set and different result. Hana deserved to win the title but interesting the following week she lost to Wendy in three set in the NSW open in the semi finals where Wendy went on to beat Pam Shriver after saving seven match points. Also any one doubting the quality of 1980 Australian Open field, it was the first time in ages it some decent money injected into it and was moved away from the men's tournament and it attracted the first time in a couple of years a quality field that included Evonne Goolagong/Cawley, Martina Navratilova, Hana Mandlikova, Wendy Turnbull, Pam Shriver Sylvia Hanika and Sue Barker beside Virginia Ruzici and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch so it wasn't a shabby field at all..
Exactly... she played so casually and effortlessly, like Evonne Goolagong. Athletically superior to everyone on tour, with a decent amount of intensity, she could've won 30 majors.
These matches with wooden racket versus graphite racket seem so anachronistic today - graphite has such an advantage! No better example than the 1983 and 1984 US Open finals - Evert with a graphite racket in 1984 was levels better than the year before when Martina (graphite racket in both) killed her. Luckily it didn’t stop HM 😘

I think the best player to not win Wimbledon is Seles or Henin, probably Seles. However the best grass player to not win Wimbledon is Hana. So it depends what you mean "best not to win".

Yeah not sure why, the Australian open women's wise was in limbo after 1976, Wendy had played in the Australian open from 1970 to 1976 only missing 1971. the fields were decimated for both 1977 events and 1978 and 1979 but still had some players of note, Jan 1977 had Kerry Reid and Dianne Fromholtz playing, Dec 1977 had Evonne, Kerry Reid and Sue Barker.1978 it was only Sue Barker really of any note and 1979 Hana Mandlikova. Not sure why Wendy didn't at least compete in any of those years as she played and made the US open final in 1977 and also the French in 1979, i know she was around in Australia as she played the NSW open in 1978 at White City making the final against Di Fromholtz so she could have competed in the Australian open over those years but like a lot of players chose not to, It was only in 1980 when the tournament was completely overhauled and Toyota increased the money in the Woman's tournament that it started to attract quality players again and start earning its way back to being a proper Grand slam event.
Also Wendy played Evonne in the final of the Toyota classic at Kooyong in November 1977 just before the Australian Open so i wonder why Wendy didn't play that one, maybe Wendy headed straight back to the US after that loss as she played Evonne again in a final in Los Angeles in early Jan 1978.
I had also forgotten about the 1979 Toyota classic where Hana beat Wendy after Wendy got heated over an out ball from Hana which was called in and Wendy's game disintegrated from that point, still its another example of her playing in Australia close to the time of the Australian open in 1979.

Kooyong had a lot of atmosphere, when you were there it was quite incredible, that smell of the grass
