Yes, the level of player is higher today in terms of power, rackets etc but nothing replaces the innate beauty of her game and the depth of her strategic thinking during this match. A real pleasure to watch.
The level of play is no way higher today with all the screaming queens, it was way better in those days .....as far as the actual match is concerned Evonne was the one who finally got the better start in this the last of their four meetings at Wimbledon

Playing Tracy helped her find the selection of plays that draw a baseliner in toward the net ( not by their own volition) then pass them and in Evonnes lobs and dinks into the open court.playing tracy primedvrvonne for Chris . Both tracy and Chris have the same weakness comparatively . Both have trouble reaching low angled shots to their backhand - both having two handed backhands. Also running up and back and wide forehands. Chris was a much more flexible player but after finally beating Martins in sf amend her tevcord agsinst Evonne , Chris relaxed instead of psyched up and on fire hitting on front foot dictating , she was slow and late in that first set and Evonne toyed with her .In 79. Evonne was the one out of rhythm , in 80it was Chris . Chris looks half asleep walking imm to the court. Think she took Evonne too lightly celebrating the Martina win . At open after h by eating Austin evert humketedvdoen and prepared herself for final. Evonne after beating Tracy was already grooved with tactics to beat Chris . Chris feared Austin and Evonne beat her . Chris should’ve taken Evonne as a big threat and come prepared to battle. But this was evonnesvtome to shine
@@lenwelch2195 True - on grass Yvonne had all these short bouncing shots which took both Chris and Tracy out of their comfort zone. And the SF with Martina took alot out of Chrissy mentally and she came out kinda flat in the final. Not take anything away from Yvonne though.
Anyone else think the game was more beautiful back in the days of wooden rackets? Perhaps this match is a bit of an outlier though, as I recall some endless push matches as well on the men's and the women's tour. But, some serve and volley in the game today would be nice as well! Anyway, Goolagong had such a beautiful game. So much touch. Those 1st 3 games I thought she was in the zone. Both she and Evert had gorgeous backhands the likes of which we probably won't see with the modern game.

@Big Time search for Evert's strong battles vs the Golden Slam winning Steffi Graf in 1987/1989 and than think again. A 34y/o almost retired Chrissie was still able to really push the great Steffi to her limits. The same Steffi that 10 years later, as an almost retiring 30 years old just coming back from a knee surgery, was perfectly able to compete with the young Williams sisters. Tennis talent is timeless. These great champions (Goolagong, Evert, Graf etc.), if they would've been playing in different historical times, would've simply reacted to a different mix of racquets, strings, balls, courts and opponents by playing a different tennis, of course developing the right technique for that time. They would've just played differently and would've been great champions in any tennis' historic time. Plain and simple.

As much as I love Chrissie, I was happy that Evonne won.....this title and the 1977 loss to Virginia are the only two times I EVER was happy the other player won against Chrisse, Dan Maskill and Ann Jones...the best commentators...so professional, so smart, total class!

I can't believe this was 40 years ago. I remember watching this match and being so frustrated by Chris' uncharacteristic play. But Evonne was on fire this day, there was no beating her in this match. And she is stunning to watch, one of my favorite players ever.
So weird how she won at the beginning and end of the decade, and not in between. All of her AO wins came in between, with her lone RG win coming in 1971 as well. Sad that she reached four consecutive USO finals but was never able to win there.

No disrespect to the amazing Evonne, but it was a very poor final in 1971. Court played atrociously and Evonne later admitted she was perplexed as to why. Court later revealed she was pregnant but I don't fully recall if she knew it before the match or found out after. I think she knew.

Very enjoyable. Great to see the way the game was played before the "power" era. An observation on Evonne, she played most of her serve points with a ball in her off hand. Truly remarkable, a true one handed style player. I guess that's how she learned and it just became natural for her to hold that second ball while playing.

It all looks so genteel against the way the game is played today which is just all power but I feel back in the day, they played with more finesse somehow. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a die hard tennis fan so I’ll watch any match and love it but there was something about both the men’s and the women’s game back in the 70’s and 80’s.
Was that Evert’s lone win against Navratilova at Wimbledon? I think that she may have also won in 1976 but not totally sure. The 1980 win was a massive shock at the time, particularly because it was Navratilova’s best surface and she was dominating at the time, AND up 6-4 3-1 in that match. In fact, she and Austin were both highly expected to get to the final but were both upset in the semis (Cawley obviously bearing Austin).
@@matthewmcalister2165 1980 wasn't really a good year for Navratilova. She skipped the French, lost to Evert at Wimbledon, and lost in the 4th round or something at the US. Evert won the French, beat her at Wimbledon, and finally removed the jinx she had against Austin at the US Open. My understanding was it was only really in 1981 that Navratilova started to get it together with Nancy Lieberman and Renne Richards that she was really ready to become dominant (in 1983/84) when there was no-one to touch her. Great players, all of them. The one I feel sorry for is Austin, who had so many injuries and had to retire early.

Lovely Yvonne Goolagong was such a.graceful, talented player and appeared so laid back with every shot. These days tennis is more about the power, crash, bang and whallap and is not so enjoyable for me. Notice how no one run up to the box after winning, i don't know who started that off, anyone know?
Evonne was just beautiful to watch, she had so much talent, but didn’t necessarily channel it right all the time. When she flowed, she was unstoppable. Also, pleasure to watch a match without the screaming grunting like the Williams, Seles, and all the other grunt queens.
tennis quality produced by grunt Queens, starting with Monica is much higher, it's a different sport. Your are probably of a different generation and I can understand how nostalgia can impact our perceptiots tough.
@@mikiafu nothing to do with nostalgia. Tennis had much more variety here than Monica ever had her in game. I dont even have to start about her horrible two-handed forehand. Graf had a lot of grace/ elegance in her movement and Hingis and Henin brought some classical elements to the game. Also Barty very nice to watch. Hitting both sides two-handed and grunting at the same time is not very nice to watch, at least for me. And somebody with Steffis footwork would be unbeatable today with the low standard of the WTA. Rybakina and Iga at their best are great and also quite nice to watch but especially Elena is very unpredictable.
While I agree the game was different, nobody felt constrained by the wooden racquets at the time. They were all we had, and good players could work the ball quite well. I'd personally prefer using them today, if my arm could stand it.

Navratilova and Austin were so heavily favored to be in this final, odd that neither made the Open final either, that is due of course to Evert being in both, while Evonne played the march of her life here in this final. Beating Two of greatest baseliners ever
Totally agree. I'm dumbfounded at the total SILENCE from both commentators at this magnificent winner. The same footage with BJ King commentating for US television had BJ waxing lyrical about how great a shot this was. Dan Maskell always favoured "Chrissie".
Evonnes's volleys are better than most wta's today. And she smashes!! Beautifully. Something very few WTA's can do with consistency today. All that with a terrible racket by today's standards. A true talent
evonne played consistent and concentrated... evert played tentative and hoping for evonne to falter, and she didn't.... must have irked evert as she had just beaten goolagong 2 weeks prior at the chicester grass tournament, although it was 3 tough sets and hadn't lost to goolagong in 2 years (1978 boston indoors that was evert's comeback after 4 months layoff and goolagong won in 3 sets 6-4 in the third)... this would actually be the last time as well that evert would lose to goolagong... interesting in that in another upset, evert losing to wade at the wimbledon 77, that it would be the last time evert would ever lose to wade again as well..evonne did earn this title with 3 sets wins over stove, mandlikova, austin previously, so a pretty tough draw...
What a beautiful, fluid, graceful mover Goolagong was. She never seemed rushed. Lovely backhand, not an ugly looking stroke like Henin's, which seemed jerky, imo.

How beautiful a player is Evonne Goolagong? I used to watch her hit with Vitas Gerulaitis at the Pittsburgh Racket Club when they played World Team Tennis for the Triangles. What a marvel. A liquid stroke, perfectly clocked.

I hope that the host will realise just how popular and well respected the marvellous Evonne Goolagong is even to this day and will post more footage of her great matches. In particular could we have her victory over Court in the 1971 final, her semi final win over Evert in their first meeting in 1972, her 4 victories over Wade and the tragic 1978 semi against Navratilova when her Achilles' tendon snapped whilst leading in the closely fought third set. The 1980 semi against Tracey Austin would also be wonderful to see. There is scant footage available of THE most popular player at Wimbledon in the 1970s.
So true, and all natural grace; Evonne is like a butterfly, floating on air. It’s hard to watch the modern women now, after seeing the beauty & elegance of these balletic ladies matches these past few days.
On a completely trivial note, I'm amazed Wimbledon allowed Evert to wear that pink & blue striped TShirt after the rain break. No player would get away with that today and neither player would be allowed the coloured warm up jackets they were sporting then. Evert looks devastated by this loss. Always such a sporting loser, her sportsmanship was legendary, but she seems to be barely in control of her emotions here and couldn't bring herself to stand next to Cawley for the photographs in the trophy presentation. She later admitted she could not believe she'd lost the match and had completely underestimated Cawley on this day. I don't recall any other presentation being curtailed by rain in Wimbledon history! Cawley barely has the trophy for even five minutes. History had already been made by this being the first championship (men or women) decided on a tie break; the first tie break there'd been in a women's final at all.
It was simply Evonnes day, she knew she had to win from the baseline. Chris was certainly not at her best and she looked uncomfortable. This was the match that made up for a whole career in my opinion, from Evonnes point of view, out her up there with the others after all those heartbreaking Grand Slam losses !
Evonne was a class act and had some wonderful tussles with Chris. A second Wimbledon and a 7th Grand Slam so well deserved the 78 or 79 semi she was in a winning position against Martina and had a bad ankle injury otherwise she was on her way to winning and getting through to the final

Funny to see how Evert was almost always smiling after a defeat in her younger years and often looked positively pissed off (though always respectful) in her late career

Why was Chris Evert sitting facing sideways during changeovers? I love watching these matches from the past, brings back memories of my youth. Today I’m just a classic couch potato.
I always found when Evonne played her best, she was better than Chris on anything but clay. But it seemed she only played her best half the time. They used to say she had ‘walkabouts’ where she’d lose focus. That rarely happened to Chris; it was her determination that usually won their big matches (except this one of course)
Evert was totally asleep the first 3 games, she doesn’t even seem warmed up, as if she hadn’t stretched at all. So puzzling to see her not even getting upset, as if she could lose the first set , no problem she’d win in three. I don’t sense any urgency in her at all. The end of the match she played a nervy tie break. Granted Evonne played with such concentration but seeing Evert play with no intensity had to have encouraged her . All these years later I still find this matcha huge puzzle. These great players are human and who knows what the real story is behind the scenes. We’ve all had bad days. I am happy that if Evert had a bad day it was Evonne on the other side of the net and not Austin.
Great Evonne classy and of course chrisy too. Their outfits still looks super cool too. Youngsters today are wearing tennis gear, even the trainers are vintage and making a come back - bring back the 80s I say
Notice the crowd in those days were far more polite and restrained and respected the players, unlike today with constant shouting and heckling ! The players themselves didn't grunt and screech like demented cats either !
Not to take anything away from Evonne's fine play, but Chris missed a ton of routine shots in the first 10 games. Short balls in which Chris was drawn in on she dumped into the net or hit out. She missed a few easy volleys too. Chris won 6 of 8 games from 0-3 in the second, but too little too late. Great to see Evonne take one last Slam title.
Evonne may have been the most naturally talented player ever, male or female. She floated around the court and, when she was “on” she made very difficult shots look effortless.
McEnroe has to be mentioned here. But Evonne was always my favourite in the females before Steffi came along by the time Evonne had retired. Than Henin in the early 2000:s. Very hard to find any to root for after Barty retired. Maybe Elena for her charming personality 😍.
Chris' forehand morphed a bit once she FINALLY started using graphite (in 1984!). Again, Evert-Lloyd got hosed by the seeding committee! Tracy Austin #2 seed over Evert-Lloyd? PUH-LEEEZE! Especially knowing how they bumped Mandlikova from her #5 ranking to the #2 seed the next year in 1981 just because.
Joe Momma. Mandlikova was seeded n2 perhaps because she made at that time 3 Grand Slams finals in the row before playing Wimbledon and won two of them.
Interesting to me how rain (twice - 1974 US Open semis and this match) saved Chris from what likely would have been two of the worst drubbings of her career...Evonne up 6-0, 4-3 and 6-1, 3-0 when play was suspended. And that damn broken racket string in the 1975 US Open final! We can only imagine what would have happened had those breaks not rattled Evonne when she was truly in the zone. Sigh.
At the time this was considered a major upset as Ms Cawley had been away from the game being a new mother and Chris was #1 in the world. What people forgot was, this was Ms. Cawley's best surface and suited her game well, and it was the opposite for Chris. If not for the rain delay in the 2nd set at 3-0, this could've been a 6-1, 6-1 result. Chris said after beating Martina in the semis, she had a big let down in the finals.

I'm not particularly impressed by the fact that racquets are more powerful today. Play with wooden racquets was arguably more graceful.

@Big Time search for Evert's strong battles vs the Golden Slam winning Steffi Graf in 1987/1989 and than think again. A 34y/o almost retired Chrissie was still able to really push the great Steffi to her limits. The same Steffi that 10 years later, as an almost retiring 30 years old just coming back from a knee surgery, was perfectly able to compete with the young Williams sisters. Tennis talent is timeless. These great champions (Goolagong, Evert, Graf etc.), if they would've been playing in different historical times, would've simply reacted to a different mix of racquets, strings, balls, courts and opponents by playing a different tennis, of course developing the right technique for that time. They would've just played differently and would've been great champions in any tennis' historic time. Plain and simple.

Thanks for providing! I haven't seen this whole match since that day! As much as I love Chrissie, I was happy that Evonne won.....this title and the 1977 loss to Virginia are the only two times I EVER was happy the other player won against Chrisse, Dan Maskill and Ann Jones...the best commentators...so professional, so smart, total class!

I can't believe this was 40 years ago. I remember watching this match and being so frustrated by Chris' uncharacteristic play. But Evonne was on fire this day, there was no beating her in this match. And she is stunning to watch, one of my favorite players ever.
I would also love to see Evonne's first Wimbledon win against Margaret Court in 1971
So weird how she won at the beginning and end of the decade, and not in between. All of her AO wins came in between, with her lone RG win coming in 1971 as well. Sad that she reached four consecutive USO finals but was never able to win there.

No disrespect to the amazing Evonne, but it was a very poor final in 1971. Court played atrociously and Evonne later admitted she was perplexed as to why. Court later revealed she was pregnant but I don't fully recall if she knew it before the match or found out after. I think she knew.

£18,000 in 1980 money the equivalent of £85,000 in 2022 money. A fraction of what they get today, but not quite as bad as it sounds to modern ears.
Very enjoyable. Great to see the way the game was played before the "power" era. An observation on Evonne, she played most of her serve points with a ball in her off hand. Truly remarkable, a true one handed style player. I guess that's how she learned and it just became natural for her to hold that second ball while playing.

So would I! Is that not on the Wimbledon TH-cam page? Would be an incredible match to watch. It all looks so genteel against the way the game is played today which is just all power but I feel back in the day, they played with more finesse somehow. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a die hard tennis fan so I’ll watch any match and love it but there was something about both the men’s and the women’s game back in the 70’s and 80’s.
Was that Evert’s lone win against Navratilova at Wimbledon? I think that she may have also won in 1976 but not totally sure. The 1980 win was a massive shock at the time, particularly because it was Navratilova’s best surface and she was dominating at the time, AND up 6-4 3-1 in that match. In fact, she and Austin were both highly expected to get to the final but were both upset in the semis (Cawley obviously bearing Austin).

@@matthewmcalister2165 1980 wasn't really a good year for Navratilova. She skipped the French, lost to Evert at Wimbledon, and lost in the 4th round or something at the US. Evert won the French, beat her at Wimbledon, and finally removed the jinx she had against Austin at the US Open. My understanding was it was only really in 1981 that Navratilova started to get it together with Nancy Lieberman and Renne Richards that she was really ready to become dominant (in 1983/84) when there was no-one to touch her. Great players, all of them. The one I feel sorry for is Austin, who had so many injuries and had to retire early.

Lovely Yvonne Goolagong was such a.graceful, talented player and appeared so laid back with every shot. These days tennis is more about the power, crash, bang and whallap and is not so enjoyable for me. Notice how no one run up to the box after winning, i don't know who started that off, anyone know?

Evonne was just beautiful to watch, she had so much talent, but didn’t necessarily channel it right all the time. When she flowed, she was unstoppable. Also, pleasure to watch a match without the screaming grunting like the Williams, Seles, and all the other grunt queens.
Sharapova tops them all in the grunt department. Other than that I agree with your other comments regarding Evonne.

Graf had a lot of grace/ elegance in her movement and Hingis and Henin brought some classical elements to the game. Also Barty very nice to watch.
Hitting both sides two-handed and grunting at the same time is not very nice to watch, at least for me.
And somebody with Steffis footwork would be unbeatable today with the low standard of the WTA. Rybakina and Iga at their best are great and also quite nice to watch but especially Elena is very unpredictable.

While I agree the game was different, nobody felt constrained by the wooden racquets at the time. They were all we had, and good players could work the ball quite well. I'd personally prefer using them today, if my arm could stand it.

evonne played consistent and concentrated... evert played tentative and hoping for evonne to falter, and she didn't.... must have irked evert as she had just beaten goolagong 2 weeks prior at the chicester grass tournament, although it was 3 tough sets and hadn't lost to goolagong in 2 years (1978 boston indoors that was evert's comeback after 4 months layoff and goolagong won in 3 sets 6-4 in the third)... this would actually be the last time as well that evert would lose to goolagong... interesting in that in another upset, evert losing to wade at the wimbledon 77, that it would be the last time evert would ever lose to wade again as well..evonne did earn this title with 3 sets wins over stove, mandlikova, austin previously, so a pretty tough draw...
Evonne became pregnant with her son right after this and had not played much since her daughter was born in 77.
What a beautiful, fluid, graceful mover Goolagong was. She never seemed rushed. Lovely backhand, not an ugly looking stroke like Henin's, which seemed jerky, imo.
She's a shot maker and its a beautiful thing to watch!

How beautiful a player is Evonne Goolagong? I used to watch her hit with Vitas Gerulaitis at the Pittsburgh Racket Club when they played World Team Tennis for the Triangles. What a marvel. A liquid stroke, perfectly clocked.
Evonne was the best women's player to watch - I gave upon the women's game after she retired, apart from Hana Mandlikova.
Evonne used to come into my work and have a bit of a flutter. Lovely lady.

Evonne’ backhand cross court smash at 1.37 is an absolutely amazing stroke and I’m dumbfounded at the total silence from Dan Maskell and Ann Jones.
It was obvious to me, the announcers were all for Chris, and didn't try to hide it. That happened a lot in those days.

I hope that the host will realise just how popular and well respected the marvellous Evonne Goolagong is even to this day and will post more footage of her great matches. In particular could we have her victory over Court in the 1971 final, her semi final win over Evert in their first meeting in 1972, her 4 victories over Wade and the tragic 1978 semi against Navratilova when her Achilles' tendon snapped whilst leading in the closely fought third set. The 1980 semi against Tracey Austin would also be wonderful to see. There is scant footage available of THE most popular player at Wimbledon in the 1970s.

On a completely trivial note, I'm amazed Wimbledon allowed Evert to wear that pink & blue striped TShirt after the rain break. No player would get away with that today and neither player would be allowed the coloured warm up jackets they were sporting then. Evert looks devastated by this loss. Always such a sporting loser, her sportsmanship was legendary, but she seems to be barely in control of her emotions here and couldn't bring herself to stand next to Cawley for the photographs in the trophy presentation. She later admitted she could not believe she'd lost the match and had completely underestimated Cawley on this day. I don't recall any other presentation being curtailed by rain in Wimbledon history! Cawley barely has the trophy for even five minutes. History had already been made by this being the first championship (men or women) decided on a tie break; the first tie break there'd been in a women's final at all.
It was simply Evonnes day, she knew she had to win from the baseline. Chris was certainly not at her best and she looked uncomfortable. This was the match that made up for a whole career in my opinion, from Evonnes point of view, out her up there with the others after all those heartbreaking Grand Slam losses !

Evonne also had incredible sportsmanship. Look at her smile after those losses! especially 75 against Billie Jean where she lost 6-0, 6-1
The style of play back then was beautiful to watch. One difference today is all the grunting.
Evonne was a class act and had some wonderful tussles with Chris. A second Wimbledon and a 7th Grand Slam so well deserved

I thought I'd gone deaf until I realised there was no grunting/screaming in those days. Even the "out" calls are rather civilised.
Funny to see how Evert was almost always smiling after a defeat in her younger years and often looked positively pissed off (though always respectful) in her late career

I always found when Evonne played her best, she was better than Chris on anything but clay. But it seemed she only played her best half the time. They used to say she had ‘walkabouts’ where she’d lose focus. That rarely happened to Chris; it was her determination that usually won their big matches (except this one of course)

According to the scoreboard, it was Mrs R Cawley v Mrs J M Lloyd. Back then, Wimbledon didn't allow married women to have first names.

Evert was totally asleep the first 3 games, she doesn’t even seem warmed up, as if she hadn’t stretched at all. So puzzling to see her not even getting upset, as if she could lose the first set , no problem she’d win in three. I don’t sense any urgency in her at all. The end of the match she played a nervy tie break. Granted Evonne played with such concentration but seeing Evert play with no intensity had to have encouraged her . All these years later I still find this matcha huge puzzle. These great players are human and who knows what the real story is behind the scenes. We’ve all had bad days. I am happy that if Evert had a bad day it was Evonne on the other side of the net and not Austin.
Great Evonne classy and of course chrisy too. Their outfits still looks super cool too. Youngsters today are wearing tennis gear, even the trainers are vintage and making a come back - bring back the 80s I say
Notice the crowd in those days were far more polite and restrained and respected the players, unlike today with constant shouting and heckling ! The players themselves didn't grunt and screech like demented cats either !
Not to take anything away from Evonne's fine play, but Chris missed a ton of routine shots in the first 10 games. Short balls in which Chris was drawn in on she dumped into the net or hit out. She missed a few easy volleys too. Chris won 6 of 8 games from 0-3 in the second, but too little too late. Great to see Evonne take one last Slam title.
Evonne may have been the most naturally talented player ever, male or female. She floated around the court and, when she was “on” she made very difficult shots look effortless.
McEnroe has to be mentioned here. But Evonne was always my favourite in the females before Steffi came along by the time Evonne had retired. Than Henin in the early 2000:s. Very hard to find any to root for after Barty retired. Maybe Elena for her charming personality 😍.
Chris' forehand morphed a bit once she FINALLY started using graphite (in 1984!).
Again, Evert-Lloyd got hosed by the seeding committee! Tracy Austin #2 seed over Evert-Lloyd? PUH-LEEEZE! Especially knowing how they bumped Mandlikova from her #5 ranking to the #2 seed the next year in 1981 just because.
But Mandlikova proved them right by reaching the final.
Joe Momma. Mandlikova was seeded n2 perhaps because she made at that time 3 Grand Slams finals in the row before playing Wimbledon and won two of them.
Interesting to me how rain (twice - 1974 US Open semis and this match) saved Chris from what likely would have been two of the worst drubbings of her career...Evonne up 6-0, 4-3 and 6-1, 3-0 when play was suspended. And that damn broken racket string in the 1975 US Open final! We can only imagine what would have happened had those breaks not rattled Evonne when she was truly in the zone. Sigh.
At the time this was considered a major upset as Ms Cawley had been away from the game being a new mother and Chris was #1 in the world. What people forgot was, this was Ms. Cawley's best surface and suited her game well, and it was the opposite for Chris. If not for the rain delay in the 2nd set at 3-0, this could've been a 6-1, 6-1 result. Chris said after beating Martina in the semis, she had a big let down in the finals.
