Them performing this piece doesn't cease being fascinating for some reason... Me 10 years ago; *Playing LittleBigPlanet* Me 10 years after; *Analyzing experimental music*
not exactly what happened - each section of the song's vocals are triggered by Ian. so when John played that fill, out of time verse sample ended, and Ian retriggered the chorus back in time. the samples do not continuously play from verse to chorus, they are different samples that are manually triggered by Ian.
It would appear that the drummer has his click in the monitor, rather than an earpiece (the bass players looks like he is trying to catch the down beat at one point). Why you would do this, with such a huge margin for error i beyond me. He clearly needs that click to be more defined to him …
In case you're all unaware, it takes a tremendous amount of dedication, energy and talent to do what these guys do !! Thank you for sharing this 🙏 it's meditative !!
If I were BATTLES, it would be in my contract that every venue have a couple GIANT fans on stage. These guys sweat more than road-workers. Great video, excellently shot.
The funny thing about Whiplash is the bloody bits were all in the wrong part of the hand. Like the between the thumb and the Finger. Holding a drum stick doesn't ever touch that part of the hand.
just discovered these guys....wow.... its the greatest feeling to discover a new band/artist/music...has a slight sonic youth, Thurston Moore influence to it...
John Stanier is an incredible drummer. He's one of my very favorites. I love how he has that one cymbal so high on his kit. A true original. And I love his intensity. Battles is an awesome band. It's hard to listen to "regular" more conventional music after listening to them because they are so good. They are operating on such a higher, more enlightened level than most other groups.
this is one of the hardest songs i feel that a 3 piece can effectively perform live with the equipment used. the way they all work together to stay on time and utilize all resources is just mind boggling. it's hard to explain in words just how impressive this is. god i love ian williams
what the shit! 35 views? really? this shit is amazing! o wait. im the only coment here? im the first one? well let me tell u something. this band is so fucking great!
As a guy who has played guitar drums keys and vocals in bands before; no, stanier just beats his drums like they murdered his kids everytime he gets behind the set.

looks like 3 professors from the humanities department at a college formed a band
Yeah good isn't it
certainly
5:46 6:11 6:51
😂
Stainer is SO underrated. Notice around 9:20 how he gradually guides the band back into time with the samples and then hits it at 9:38.
fuck this underrated shit... he is good - period
thanks for pointing it out

That is a beautiful shot of the bloody knuckle. As a drummer, i can relate.
same!
But they also look like they're trying to murder their poor drummer with a heart attack. What a test of endurance this unrelenting song is.
Just discovered them a week ago. The drummer is an absolute fucking weapon. They all are of course, but what a drummer. Wow.
god hates a coward
a real BATTLE of trying to stay in time..is what it is

lol they should send you to jail for this comment
@@1777DK He doesn't play with metronome at all, just keeps up with loops and things... Watched that in an interview...
If you've ever tried to play live to a loop, that's exactly what the battle is.
YES i noticed that too! For example at 9:20, the girl singing is not coinciding with the drumming and the rest of the song.
I was lucky enough to be at this. Randomly thought about it today after seeing some other Battles live sets and to my pleasant surprise here we are.

And good monitors
Their Sunday best is gonna need a lil extra Tide, this laundry day
Why?... Sweating is part of it... There's no need to stay clean while rockin' out.
@@losangulos Most live performers should have their own in-ears nowadays anyway, especially when it gets more complex like this.
It's what happens when you're middle aged and don't practice much physical activity
This song makes me happy!
Stanier looks he's been rehearsing "Whiplash"
and only plays the tenth part...
The funny thing about Whiplash is the bloody bits were all in the wrong part of the hand. Like the between the thumb and the Finger. Holding a drum stick doesn't ever touch that part of the hand.
This is the best cinematography and direction I've ever seen in a live musical act. Who shot this? Give them a damn Oscar
Sure, it's nicely shot, but you haven't seen much, have you. XD
I think drummer Steve from Joy Division/New order would be impressed by that drummer. Brilliant song. Thanks.
Lmao without a doubt. John Stanier is on another level of drumming. Sick to see another JD/NO fan here though. Cheers to good taste in music!
@@DonnyBomb Cheers!
even battles can miss a beat
Ooof bloody knuckle from twatting the rim or Cymbal edge. I know how that feels!
Battles are bringing me serious joy today
Sources say Amoeba keeps the AC at 90 degrees year round
Intense, hypnotic, powerful, melodic brilliance.
just discovered these guys....wow.... its the greatest feeling to discover a new band/artist/music...has a slight sonic youth, Thurston Moore influence to it...
incredible band footage, showcasing minutia of details like bleeding knuckles, thank you
Best version of this I've heard, love it
None of the other ones have the same power to them

let me guess you watch Rick and Morty, and understand all the jokes in The Big Bang Theory as well?
Ever listened to Tera Melos or The Mars Volta? Or Chon? All great bands on the more abstract and technical side. Animals as leaders is good too
@@babydaddy4257 bro have you even listened to Don Caballero?
@@TheZooropaBaby dude! Of course! The GodFathers
@@TheZooropaBaby Ever listened to those poor bastards? True enlightenment.
They should play at Pompeii.
Lololol yes
exactly thought of this because they went full pink floyd in this one
Their precision is phenomenal

So glad I clicked on this out of curiosity
The sound of music breaking.
This footage is incredible
Play this at my funeral.
NUFF SAID
Watching this band live makes me glad a wash dishes...
What??
ahead of their time.
I LOVE WHEN THEY MISS THE CLUE ( from the sample); FAITH IN HUMMANITY RESTORED!!!!!
Prendan el aire acondicionado 🥵
Splendid! Wish you all love.

gotta admit, how does this not have more views
Well said my friend :)
75.500 right now.
2:05-2:30 Best Zildjian-ad I've ever saw.
Played in blood & sweat
Wow!
Someone hand that guy a damn towel!
intense🎉
A first, I thought that they were playing in a sauna. Must be hard work to play in a band
As a guy who has played guitar drums keys and vocals in bands before; no, stanier just beats his drums like they murdered his kids everytime he gets behind the set.
Hard work playing in a four-piece band with only three members and a few loopers
blood...sweat and tears
That injury at 2:03 looks painful
John looking like Big Ed from Twin Peaks in these close-ups.
Curious question, does anyone know what equipment they're using to get those looped sounds and other effects?
Gibson Echoplex for looping? Otherwise I think most of the sounds are live or on a DL4
@@endlessmike1611 thanks
I really like the middle eight👍🏾
is your pfp the grenade launcher man from apocalypse now
Little big planet 1
Nice signed poster of 'Brave New World'.
What happened to the Eric Andre looking guy

he went to the legalize ranch convention
his dad is the avant jazz God, so ......
u guys ever thought about collaborating with JAMES HOLDEN
Nothing fake about these guys. Chief Joseph works with this. They should have called this Break Out in Area 54.

ohhh esta version la ame, canta una chava ?
Who is the camera man ???
He's bleeding.
he's ROCKIN!
That floor tom is from another werldz
literally pink floyd
The videographer needs to calm down and keep away from the zoom.
Disagree. It suits the song. And he held his shots.
Jesus Christ, someone turn up the air conditioning!
