Rogue - Doctor Who review - Is this the worst episode ever? Yes, it sucks.

  • Doctor Who - Rogue. An episode so thin, so poorly written, so badly thought out and so misguided that it wastes airtime and a talented cast.
    Initially, I was excited to see that Jonathan Groff was going to be in this episode as I had previously enjoyed his performances as Jesse St. James in Glee, Kristoff in Frozen and King George in Hamilton. My excitement however wanned within the first few minutes of this abysmal episode.

    Not a fan. The previous 2 episodes were WAY much better.

      Agreed. The previous were great. That’s why I was so disappointed with this one.

    this episode wasn't the best, but a lot of this criticism is surface-level and poorly thought out. Like the bit where you said "heres the plot: some aliens try to take over humans and then they get stopped". Thats just the basic premise of the show as a whole, you didnt talk about anything specific about that episode. That wasn't describing the plot at all. It all just seems like pointed anger rather than analysis. Sorry mate.

      It was more like a classic campy-style episode of Doctor Who

      Also I am baffled with the comparison of the Orphan 55 costume to the costumes in Rogue, which looks way better in every way

    Personally, I thought this episode was the best yet! to me, it was everything I watch doctor who for. Goofy villains, good side characters, a familiar setting we can all picture and believe, and finally, the doctor just having a bit of fun (and flirting)! This episode didn't bring anything particularly new (yet) but that's what made it great! The doctor has never been shy of pointless romances on missions, so I wonder what's different about this one? And personally, I don't mind the doctor crying and actually think it's positive, there may well be perfectly valid arguments against this but unfortunately, yours just made me feel sad for you that another man crying brings back such terrible memories of your own father :(

      I’m going to go into more detail with another video as to why I thought this episode was so bad. The writing and plot are atrocious. It feels like a different show and they just slapped the Doctor Who title on it. I do appreciate you taking the time to comment though. I’m not being sarcastic, I prefer these types of comments instead the abuse I sometimes get. You didn’t need to be personal about my father though. In the end it’s just a TV show.

    This episode was RTD's version of the "Burgers?" meme.

    I thought the idea of aliens whose sole objective was to do cosplay was deeply silly. At least with Orphan 55 one had the fun of "BENNI BENNI!"

    Btw, I was NOT aware of Bridgerton before this episode. Literally had to pause the episode to research it and read about it. The episode reminded me so much of Haunting of Villa D. and Girl in Fireplace. I haven't really gotten engaged in a DW episode since Twelfth (I miss Capaldi so much), but "Rogue" TRULY captured me. I think the parallel between Rogue and Doctor (mask of seriousness vs. mask of joker) was brilliant.
    I wrote a short reaction to the episode when it aired, on Tumblr:
    Why I love Sci-Fis like DW: social commentary on Culture Vultures, loss of authenticity in a "TV-Culture" society :
    How cool was it that RTD insisted on the aliens looking like birds? There's layers of symbolism there.... I love the metaphorical symbolism of the "fleeting freedom" that bird creatures have. And how the Chuldurs are bird-like aliens that have the FLEETING NEED to wear people as costumes to boost their ego or "sense of play" in order to exist in life. From my perspective anyway, the Chuldurs' monstrosity symbolizes the narcissism that is becoming more pervasive in "TV culture"--i.e. how people are not authentic anymore, so they "wear" other people's life, and follow celebrities' trends, and cosplay HUMANITY as mere costumes, from one person to the next, in order to feel a false sense of reality WHICH IS EXACTLY THE RUNNING THEME OF THIS SEASON (living inside a fairytale/reality TV).
    All the Chuldurs do is "play" and "repeat/read lines" for the drama of it all... like Energy Vultures. NONE OF IT IS REAL. Just cosplay.
    I don't know if any of of MY posted analysis is accurate AT ALL to RTD and his writing staff's INTENT, but I love that all of these "creative coincidences" that resulted from the collaboration table of DW's production team, ultimately made this GLORIOUS episode.
    I also love that the "bird-alien monsters that wear people as costumes/cosplays" is in PERFECT parallel to the Doctor/Rogue's interaction-- how the "healer" (Doctor) is often times wearing a joker MASK to "move forward and heal himself", and how "grief" (Rogue) is in opposite wearing a MASK of seriousness to "never wanna feel loss again".
    THESE ARE RUNNING THEMES HERE.

      I miss Capaldi too. He was brilliant. I loved his dynamic with Bill. I would have liked to have seen another season with them together. She had the part mailed from the first minute she hit the screen.

    This was on the weak side of Doctor Who for this series. However it’s leagues better than what mostly came out of Doctor Who when Chibnall ran the show

    Maybe you're just very subconsciously homophobic? LOL. I think this episode was one of the best of Fifteen's so far. 73 Yards is up there... the "bird aliens" are social commentaries about people's addiction with cosplaying HUMANITY (read: no one is authentic anymore, not even you perhaps, because TH-cam, instagram, all these social media platforms have made it impossible for people to "play" their actual selves). "Rogue" was well-written in terms of dialogue, formula, plot, and social commentary.... I find that most people who criticize the episode are dudes who are very SUBCONSCIOUSLY grossed out by the Doctor kissing Rogue.... which is weird because THE DOCTOR HAS DONE THAT WITH OTHERS BEFORE. Madame Pompadour for example. Yet, people PRAISE that episode????

    • @lesigh1749
      @lesigh1749 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Forget homophobia, had ANY previous male doctor instantly set eyes in a woman on a balcony and smoldered with visible lust, then proceeded to call them "babes" and gyrate their hips suggestively while giving them come to bed eyes, then snogged their face off after knowing them for just half an hour, all of this while forgetting their companion was in a house full of killer aliens, it would have been horribly unfitting for the character.
      Maybe your just a little homo obsessive and really really want there to be no problem with the way the not-Doctor behaved in this script? LOL

    • @kaptainuke
      @kaptainuke  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely not homophobic. I was accused of pedalling “gay filth” because I really liked The Devil’s Chord. I’m going to go into more detail with another video as to why I thought this episode was so bad. The writing and plot are atrocious. It feels like a different show and they just slapped the Doctor Who title on it. I do appreciate you taking the time to comment though. I’m not being sarcastic, I prefer these types of comments instead of the abusive one I get (which I delete). Thank you.

    nah weren't that bad, sure i dont wanna see the doctor in romantic situations (with anyone, this aint an anti gay thing) that sjust not what the character is about.
    and the end with rogue just shoving Ruby off the trap made no sence, cos if he could do that he could have just grabbed her and pulled her off and all would have been safe......but it was an ok episode.......and Space Babies is still the worst episode ihave ever seen in Dr Who
