Rev matching when downshifting is always a best practice in any vehicle. If you rev on point, gear change is possible w/o clutching at all. This technique is extremely helpful in an older, high mileage vehicle with worn synchros and/or stiff clutch, such as the old F-150 I drove throughout my teens. Never drove an STI though, looks like fun!
@cj6017 - Not using clutch when changing gears is called floating gears. it’s a technique used commonly in semi trucks because they have no synchros. I decided to try it in my little 5 speed civic and it’s totally possible. It’s slower than using the clutch and rev matching when downshifting is mandatory. But I prefer to use clutch. It’s quicker. And if you use good clutch technique, you can smoothly downshift without rev matching. I do it all the time and get compliments from my passengers 😃
My STI has about 84,000 miles on it. I have not done any mods to it but It came with a tuner, Invidia Downpipe exhaust, and an grimmspeed cold air intake
I Upshift at about 3500 rpm. That is what is recommended for my vehicle. What I would do is google the year make and model of your car and find out what the recommended RPM is for your car to shift up. I don’t want to tell you the wrong thing. I know that some cars do shift better at 2000 RPMs and some cars shift better at higher RPMs!

Thank you very much for your comment! I love rev matching when downshifting. I used to be very scared to do it but now it comes natural

How many miles on your STI? Have you done any mods to it? Sounds like an aftermarket exhaust.
