Forged leaves and hooks coat rack, companion to my dovetail bench! FarmCraft101 DIY

  • My wife wanted a nice looking coat rack in the mud room for Christmas, so here's the result. I forged the hooks from steel rod reclaimed from an old box spring, and then forged 2 decorative leaf hooks from 1/2" mild steel bar. I used thin steel plate and a threaded stud to mount the hooks. I finished the white oak with 2 coats of danish oil. Off camera I put a coating of beeswax on all the hooks prior to final assembly. I think it turned out really nice, in fact, the finish is more to my liking than the dovetail bench. It looks much older and more traditional.

    Your combined metal/woodworking skills always result in eloquent style, durability and usefulness. This project was no exception. Well done.

    2 things. Thanks for describing the scribe technique you didn't end up using; it's a very clever trick I may need to use. When you began the leaf, I was thinking about how I don't like how everyone seems to make them flat. No leaf is flat. Then you began to show how to give it a more complex curvature! Awesome!

    Nice rack for an otherwise useless corner! Square corners are not common in older buildings but around the turn of this century we builders worked out how to do it! 🤣

    Using plug welds on your bracket plates would hide the welds and be just as strong. Nice build!!

    A couple thoughts- the term for the cut you did on the table saw "to join the two peices 10:47" is a Rabbet or UK, Rebate. Having something look "old fashion" by using only "old fashion tools" 10:55 didn't make sense to me; using only hand planes and scrapers will give you a finer, better, and smoother, professional finish than sandpaper and machines could ever do (of course, that would depend on the user).
    From the camera angle at the end, it all looks good from here. I especially like the opposing leaves on the ends, that was a nice touch.

    I think the metal is breaking because it's a hardenable spring steel, so when it cold it's more brittle, especially the first one you quenched.

    • @FarmCraft101
      @FarmCraft101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very likely. I assumed it was mild steel, but I don't think mild steel would have broken off so easily.

    I guess bed frames must be spring steel hence the brittleness after water quench?

    What is the chain around the anvil for ?

    • @FarmCraft101
      @FarmCraft101  ปีที่แล้ว

      It absorbs vibrations and makes it ring less.

  • @willykanos1044
    @willykanos1044 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I see everyone who owns an anvil wraps it with chain. No one explains why. Is it to make it ring less?

    • @FarmCraft101
      @FarmCraft101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, and mine still rings too much, but only on camera. I actually don't notice it when I'm forging.
