I honestly think this movie has such a compelling depiction of grief. It expresses how the death of a loved one doesn't just take the person away from you, but how it can rob you of the joys you had in life as well. Charlie feels as if she can't do any of the things she did with her dad anymore because to do so would be to accept that he's gone and live life on her own, which she views as a betrayal and is the reason why she's so spiteful towards her mom. Her fixing the car in the end as a sort of physical proof of her ability to move on is a really compelling way to cap off her arc.

Writing in general. Bumblebee (the movie) in comparison deals with a very personal threat. The movie gives you time to settle down and really get to know everyone so that when a big action scene comes around you actually care what happens to them. Shatter and Dropkick aren't Megatron, but the threat they pose is still very real and more importantly personal. They're after Bumblebee specifically, not some nebulous artifact. Them getting to Bumblebee won't be the end of the world (at least not the immediate end of the world) but it would still be extremely bad because through Bumblebee they'd be able to find the other Autobots and destroy the remains of the resistance, Bumblebee's friends and family.
