The rotating bezel on the classic acts almost like a built in screen protector. because the display is slightly set in you will be less likely to break or scratch your screen. My family has 4 of the original galaxy watches with this similar design. All of the screens are scratch free.

I bought the 2 active and went with a screen protector and an aluminum bezel to cover the screen edges. The watch still looks absolutely flawless 10 months later after wearing it every day, everywhere.
Granted that watch is stuck in a bootloop now :( I'm torn between the classic and the new "active"

This is excellent. One thing I care a lot about is the face size and it's a maddeningly difficult feature to compare when choosing a watch. Within the first few minutes you answered that question in the galaxy 4 series. I had assumed getting a bigger watch meant a bigger face. I'm creating a spreadsheet of features important to me and it's just silly that manufacturers don't offer a COMPLETE feature list for ALL their watches for the nerds, lol. Thank you for the excellence.

I just wanted to clarify something that seems to be causing a bit of confusion in the comments. The Watch 4 Classic and Watch 4 have the same battery and screen sizes for the respective size variants. For example, the 40mm GW4 and the 42mm GW4 Classic have the same screen and battery. Those are SMALLER than the screen and battery seen in the 44mm GW4 and 46mm GW4 Classic. That is all I wanted to clarify for now. Thanks for watching!

I'm glad they went with Silicone straps on the classic. Overall it would be more comfortable wearing it for longer duration and the leather straps on previous watch3 were of the worst quality ever. It felt cheaper than the cheapest Chinese straps..

  • @tams805
    @tams805 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The market may have changed, but they tried pretty much the same thing with the Gear S2. Only the S2 had some funky strap attachment and the S2 Classic had a normal one (both had rotating bezels, but the S2's was pretty much hidden with no notches.
They ended up going with the Classic design for several years.

    • @Z80Man
      @Z80Man 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem is standard bands will be narrower than the bezel horns and fitting another band could look weird. Or maybe not ? It would probably strongly depend on the design.
A bit of reflection subject : the black band looks much nicer than the light grey one, and maybe a black (or dark) band would better fit the silver watch model. The silver bezel isn't bad, but the light colored band makes it stand out too much and the 46 mm classic watch looks gigantic. The all black model doesn't give the same feeling, and watching some pictures or videos where the 46 mm silver classic model having been fitted a black band comforts my opinion about the light grey (almost white) band beeing a bad idea with such a big watch.
Well, I strongly advise you visit a shop in person and try the different versions before buying, because just watching videos won't help you realize how they look live... Really, try them on before decide, else you could be disappointed. The 46 mm classic doesn't seem as big as you could fear in black with a black band, because they blend seemlessly and it really makes it more discrete. You really have to try first...
Actually, the 42 mm design is much nicer (and blends in more elegantly with the band), but the screen is not only smaller, its resolution in pixels is also weaker (hence why I can't understand why they're priced the same) and the battery is smaller weaker too, resulting in reduced autonomy. In addition, the band is so short you'll probably hardly be able to fasten it if you're a man (this is knowledge from trying it on at the shop). Well, maybe the 42 mm is provided with two bands, I don't know. My 46 mm was only provided with one, and it's not an error because it matches the contents described on the box.
I've read many people complaining they got only one band, and maybe the second one is only provided with the smaller models ? It would make sense, since the larger bezel would help using a shorter band because of the added length, and maybe the two bands provided with the smaller models actually explain why the prices are the same ? I'm not sure, you'll have to carefully check the contents for each version to know if that's actually the reason.
Anyway, I'm quite happy with this watch, so don't hesitate to give it a try if you can. BTW, I'm not swapping a smartwatch for another. I usually keep my devices for years, or even decades. I finally had to change my 25 years old titanium G Shock watch because it suddenly started to consume the battery within a couple of months instead of years, so it was a good time for a change... :p

I'd really like to see your hands on take of how the Ticwatch Pro 3 GPS and the Fitbit Sense stacks up against these new Samsung watches. I have recently started getting interested in smartwatches. I always thought they were silly gimmicks but I began seeing news of how they can be useful and even help save lives with how they can report irregular heart rates and send a SOS with the fall detection and it got me interested. I bought a Watch Active2 just a couple of months ago on a big sale and I really enjoyed it so I decided to give it to my mother and just got me a Watch4. I did like the smaller 40mm version more though, not only I think it looks nicer, it feels like it doesn't get in the way as much.

I have the Active2 and don’t use the haptic bezel much because it isn’t that pleasant to use. Using your finger around the bezel is clunkier than turning a bezel in dial fashion, IMO. It sure does look like the raised classic bezel will better protect the screen. Thanks for those and other observations, Mike!

The silicon band on the Classic watch makes more sense. It is a workout inspired device whilst being a timeless piece of art. For me with the watch 3, I had to immediately buy a silicon band since the leather band started to deteriorate in just a few weeks.

I've not had that problem. I workout about 4 times a week and do a physical job and to be honest I rarely ever swapped out straps and a year later my leather strap is still going. Give it another year or so and the constantly having to remove it to go through security then it will eventually go like on my old watch 🤔

Hi Mike! Thanks for your review, I've got a Galaxy 3 45 mm and an Active 2 44 mm (both with 340 mAh batteries), now, due to the "unfortunate" choice of the new straps (way less flexible), both the new 4 "big" options don't work for my relatively small wirst.

Debated trading in the Watch 3 for the preorder, glad I didn't. The Wear OS support is the main thing I want from the new lineup, but the differences between W3 and W4Classic aren't enough to justify the $160 upgrade. I hope the upcoming versions will maintain a rotating bezel, and once some big upgrades are made (battery size, screen size, trackers) I'll shell over the cash.

I have been using Samsung watches since the first Galaxy Watch came out. I had the smaller Galaxy Watch 3 and decided to take advantage of the $250 credit Samsung offered when pre-ordering the S22 Ultra to "upgrade" to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 42mm. Unfortunately, the battery life of the 4 was miserable compared to what I would get on the 3. I got less than a full day's charge on the 4 classic 42mm vs my 3, on which I could get at least a day and a half. That was with all the exact same features enabled/disabled, watch face, and apps loaded. Therefore I returned it to go for the larger watch with the larger battery.
I really liked the rotating bezel on the 3 and wanted to keep that, but the 46mm size of the larger one just seems too bulky for my wrist. I like look and durability of the stainless steel on the Classic vs. aluminum, but I can't get past the size. As much as I will miss the rotating bezel, I've decided to go with the regular Galaxy Watch 4, 44mm after trying them both on my wrist. It's amazing how much of a difference that extra 2mm makes.

With my original galaxy, I got 2 full days. I'm debating on trading in the classic for the 44mm flat screen if the battery lasts longer, but I also don't want it to look to big on my wrist. I prefer the Watch 4 Classic look and feel. For the price, I feel consumers should have the silicone straps attached for active wear, and then an additional more premium strap included for 'classic' wear. Hopefully Samsung will take note of this in the future to help justify the price difference. As is currently, I think no more than $50 extra is justified.

I still have a Samsung Gear 2. When the watch was rather a boxy James Bond gadget than a watch, stacked with gadget features: camera with video recording, IR blaster, optical HRM.
When suddenly the massive Gear S (curved housing and display) came out, only half a year later I was not amused. This was even more like a mini Galaxy S on my wrist than the Gear 2, with its own 3G connectivity. Fortunately it had no longer a camera nor the IR blaster, so mine was still the better (1970s) James Bond watch.
The Gear S2 was the first one with a rotating bezel and fortunately they kept it. I never understood why Samsung never went the full distance by putting the actual number indications on the bezel as on aviation/ navigation and diving watches. So it can be used as such a watch, measuring elapsed time, setting time adjustments to the local solar time, as a tachymeter and compass, just with the rotating bezel and the anologue hands. Such (really costly) watches are amazingly functional, easy to use that way as analogue wrist computers with instant results at just a glance.
The current markings (on my Watch 4) do not rotate with the bezel, and the bezel has no markings at all. Missed opportunity, I think.

However I thought I understood the actual screen display as follows.
44mm vs 46mm have the identical actual display size with the ppi similar due to the 46mm having more pixels.
Your clarification afterwards also suggests the Active 2 44mm (which I have) actual screen display is smaller than the new Galaxy 4 watch 44mm.
By actual display size I'm referring to the total area a watch face is displayed.
Hence a watch face on the 4 series 44mm looks bigger in display than the 44mm Active 2.
This can only occur if the black ring surrounding the watch face is now smaller on the new 44mm 4 series.

Great Video as always Mike, clearly explained the differeces. I personally this year like the WATCH 4 rather than the CLASSIC. The Classic reminds me allot of my Gear S3 Classic. One thing i dont get with Samsung the either go totally different design one year, then back to a design from 3-4 years ago lol they just jump around to much for my liking. From GW46mm bulky and rugged to the Stylish and semi rugged GW3 back to Gear S 3 Classic look lol. Either stay the same like that your watches are distinguishable like the Apple watch or keep moving fwd subtly in the aesthetics & not backwards lol. As per GW4 just by adding the chrome plates on the side make a HUGE difference from the Active, Active 2 although subtle and that is the path they should follow. My other gripe the GW4 Classic they go 20mm band ??? WTH Samsung what am i to do with all my 22mm Bands in every single style & design from my GW46mm & GW3 mm :-( In saying all this ive jumped ship 2 months ago lol, although i still use my Note 20 Ultra, ive gone Apple watch 6 paired with iphone 12 Mini. TBH i dont think i will ever go back to a Samsung Smart Watch, totally loving my Apple watch 6 because it just works perfectly & is a hell of allot more comfy that almost every other Android watch i own. I've had the GW and then the GW3, and both have had bezel issues after about 6-8 months. Whether it be from sweat and gunk buildup causing rotating issues, or the watch just not responding to the bezel anymore -- it does eventually become a prob. Removing the bezel to clean under there, and replacing the gasket as well as the 4 magnetic springs and bearings is a pain. Although it is a more attractive piece IMO, I'll be opting for the GW4 (w/o bezel) this time simply to avoid a future headache.

The physical bezel is so satisfying once you use it to navigate. It's hard to go backwards and use a smartwatch without one. The stainless steel build too will withstand dings and scratches better also in the long run than the aluminum of the non classic version.

ironically i have a the Watch 3 and while i love the look and physical bezel if you play sports outdoors and fall on the ground if dirt gets on it the bezel stiffens up and no longer has that nice feel that's why i'm taking my chances in the regular one

I went from the GW3 to the W4...loved the green colour and its very sleek indeed but the digital bezel doesn't work as well as it does on the watch active 2 and I missed that physical bezel a lot more than I thought so ended up with the silver classic

Great review! Do you happen to know if the galaxy watch 4 Bluetooth edition will be able to use Google pay without a nearby phone? Can't seem to find official online. Thanks!

I have the OG Galaxy watch and while I love it, I am always concerned about using it while working out so I am keeping it for it's looks and I brought the Watch 4 non classic 44mm for my workout watch.

@@Thegoldenchild415 the active was nice but I was so used to the physical rotating bezel I couldn't get used to the digital one. This is my fourth version of this watch and the last two had the rotating bezel so it was a habit. It's about preference.

Just ordered a classic watch 4 to replace my 2016 gear S3 classic. After 5 years I think my watch is done.

I definitely like how they changed from the Watch vs Active nomenclature. Makes more sense this way, and makes the regular Watch 4 feel more premium. As for me, I'm a big watch guy, and kinda clumsy as well. So the Classic makes more sense for my usage. Throw in the amazing pre order trade in deals, and it didn't even cost too much! Winning!

It was quite confusing that e.g. Active2 and Watch3 were of the same generation. Now with one number 4 it's quite clear. With smaller wrists the 46mm looks quite bulky but the bezel is such a goody that I'd wished they created a 45mm bezel model. Would cost some battery but should be worth it. Maybe next generation...

I think Samsung needs to get rid of the digital rotating bezel and apply it into the UI so that when not rotating on the screen, the bezel disappears allowing for a larger bezel-less screen

They really should have kept the larger sizes straps at 22mm its gonna look off having a watch that big with a strap that thin with a non tapered strap which look a lot better than the ones they come with
