    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    John Blane (James Brolin) and Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) face the Gunslinger (Yul Brynner) once more, but this time, things go off script.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Welcome to Westworld, where nothing can go wrong...go wrong...go wrong....Writer/director Michael Crichton has concocted a futuristic "Disneyland for adults", a remote resort island where, for a hefty fee, one can indulge in one's wildest fantasies. Businessmen James Brolin and Richard Benjamin are just crazy about the old west, thus they head to the section of Westworld populated by robot desperadoes, robot lawmen, robot dance-hall gals, and the like. Benjamin's first inkling that something is amiss occurs when, during a mock showdown with robot gunslinger Yul Brynner, Brolin is shot and killed for real. It seems that the "nerve center" of Westworld has developed several serious technical glitches: the human staff is dead, and the robots are running amok. Suddenly promoted to the film's hero, Benjamin (who seems as surprised and shocked as the audience) must first avoid, then face down the relentless Brynner. Much of Westworld was lensed on the expansive grounds of the old Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills, so it's no surprise that there's something Lloydlike about Dick Benjamin's instinct for self-preservation.

    I was 10yrs old when I first saw WESTWORLD. Yul Brynner scared me as that cowboy. As I got older, I got to see what a great actor he was and how he really put forth a lot of talent and energy into his roles. This one, was one of originality. Nobody could do this role any better. RIP Yul Brynner.

    I think this scene is why this idea of robots run amok is particularly terrifying. The Terminator was just an emotionless killing machine. This...this is personal. That cold evil smile, almost on the verge of laughter as he sees the dawning of realization for the human and the growing terror in response to his predicament.

      Of course they have memory, how else would they remember their programming? And yes they are sentient. This is what occurred here It's the entire point of the story. A forewarning about what can go wrong when we let technology get away from us. It's stated in the book and the film. It's robots building robots, and not even the engineers fully understand them now because they're so complex.

      @sparkymahoney4343 8 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      +ohsnapiam59 Precisely! They just nailed it with this scene. The realization and following terror as it dawns on Benjamin the nature of his predicament. And then Brynner's reaction to that realization with an evil smile of pure delight. It really makes me wonder if that reaction was directed or impromptu. To me it seems like it may have been a bit of both. I see it as almost akin to a slave finally realizing he's not only free but can take retribution on those who enslaved him and what's more, they're afraid of him and he knows it. I've always been a huge fan of Yul Brynner. There's really never been anyone like him before or since.

      There's other references too, as the series is supposed to be a sequel to Westworld & Futureworld. The flooded out basement area is actually the original Delos welcome center/lobby from the original movie (just look for the big globe).
      There's also a line of dialog when Ford is sitting drinking with an an old-model robot in this area, to the effect of "Old Bill here is one of the last of the originals. Primitive by our present standards, clunky movement, tended to repeat themselves, and a simple handshake would give them away."
      This is a callback to the opening of Westworld where how lifelike the robots are is being discussed, "...Everything except the hands, they haven't figured out how to get the hands right yet."

  • @Damar158

      Okay, even if those robots went completely out of control, where would they get live ammunition for their firearms? I just had a horrid thought rewatching this scene; knowing that the Gunslinger was deliberately programmed to pick fights with guests, it would be logical to assume the park operators loaded its gun (and those of the other robots) with blanks to further prevent an unlikely but VERY expensive accident. A flying bullet doesn't discriminate between warm bodies and cold ones.
    Continuing on this assumption, the Gunslinger would have had to 'borrow' a human firearm and rip off its sensor to perform its corrupted function. This would explain the third guest's convenient departure by the morning of the third act...

    I love Yul Brynner's performance, infinitely better than Arnie's Terminator which is all stone-faced and running around shooting. I love how Brynner's Gunslinger starts to become conscious towards the end: it's as if actually having fulfilled his primary programed objective -- killing an opponent -- sparked-off conscious awareness, this awareness growing as he sees things his memory is not programed with, such as the maintenance/lab areas, Roman and Medieval Worlds; I actually feel sorry for him right at the end when, scorched black, his last gesture to Ritchard Benjamin is a pathetic imploring, not a killer lunge.

      Okay, even if those robots went completely out of control, where would they get live ammunition for their firearms? A theme park obviously isn't going to provide it's amusements with real bullets to possibly shoot guests with. And, with that in mind, the whole storyline of this movie goes right out the door.

    • @TheStapleGunKid

      Yeah it was the same for me. People in Michael Crichton stories never take the most basic safety precautions when setting up their parks. Jurrasic Park was no better. Why would you trust entire security of the park to electric fences? We all know how prone to failure electricity can be. No one would just assume that the electric power would never ever go down. When I first read the book Jurrasic Park, I was 9 years old, and I still realized how absurd this was.

      @crazyfvck 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cathy Audette Actually, I believe that was only for the guns that were given to the guests (so that they would not accidentally shoot themselves, or other guests.) I think they relied on the programming of the robots to keep them from shooting the guests, which obviously ended up failing.

    I adore everything about this scene, but what I LOVE from a cinematic perspective is the lack of music during the whole moment. The producers didn't want anything detracting from the the dawning horror of what The Gunslinger had now become, the stillness of John facedown as blood pours out over his fingers, and Richard Benjamin's own rising terror. This is the true kind of horror that stays with me.

    I noticed that when James Brolin's character gets shot, the gunslinger is not only smiling, but he is much faster on the draw than before. Almost as if he no longer has to hold back for a guest and wants a little payback for being bested by the two of them. These robots here are really something else. They aren't animatronics in a theme park, they are sentient machines to some extent.
    And the smile of satisfaction when he kills him is a nice touch.
