22:30, Isaiah telling the Kent Benson story -- there's some backstory there. Kent played for Indiana and when they recruited Bird, Kent was one of the upperclassmen who bullied Larry so much that he left school and went to Indiana State instead. @@NoMercy4k one more chapter to that. When McHale got 56 or 57 to set the Celtics scoring record (which Bird broke 9 days later), it was against Detroit and Benson was guarding McHale -- or trying to. Bird made sure to get McHale the ball as much as possible, both because Kevin was hot and Bird would always feed a teammate with hot hands, and because Bird was just as happy to torture Benson with assists as he was with buckets. Larry Legend was a results-oriented guy.

I dont think the players are way more athletic as they always claim they have just changed the rules since then with no hand checking and the freedom of movement stuff they started a while back. Today's NBA is more about volume shooting and in the 80's and 90's it was a team game and more strategy not constantly sprinting up and down the floor because of the rule changes. You can also include the shortening of the shot clock and the clock the cross half court contributes to a faster pace and more possessions

Lifelong Boston fan, man, I look at Jayson Tatum, and I think, "This kid has legit all the raw tools that Larry had, the size, the length, the raw shooting ability, all that, but..." - the but is that Larry had this relentless work ethic, the dedication to the game and his craft. He understood that he had to work to be the best. I remember reading a book back in the day about Larry, can't remember the title, but they said that Larry would stay behind after every game and shoot 100 free throws in the gym for every one he missed during the game. Dude was automatic because he practiced relentlessly. He lived in the gym. Jayson will never be like Larry because he doesn't have that work ethic, that dedication. He could, if he wanted to, but it's not gonna happen. I ain't gonna hate him for it, because he's got a family, and family is the most important thing in life, but he'll never be the "next Larry" because Larry dedicated himself 100% to basketball, and as a dad, Jayson can't do that.

As others stated here, Bird was basketball smart by seeing weakness of other players as you see here by trash talking getting into their heads. Shooting 3 pointers, no-look passing, and dunking! Remember that Bird played hurt. During his career at Boston, Bird endured a back injury. I believe that injured back made Bird to retire in 1993. I really do miss watching those games. When it comes between laurie and magic it's a very very hard call. His three point shots and his passing is just unreal. I would have to go with the larry though just because of those two. That court was a chess board to him. But larry and magic are my top two. After all they saved the NBA. What really will blow your mind is LeBaron put Larry Bird in his top three.

@@NoMercy4k The old timers mastered a much harder game. Pros today play at a 1975-1995 college level because of the changes in the game. You would see alot of old timers ejected from today's game, they were hands on. They didn't show up to play a game, they went to work, and their job was to end careers... Just like Mj said "Even if i gotta spend 20k and a game of golf with drinks. What is 20k to me to make Charles Barkley look stupid that night? I hate that fat f#@k." Athletes in those times were ruthless destroyers crushing hope and dreams, the "game" was just a part of the competition, champions never stopped at the buzzer. If their eyes were open they were dominating that #1 spot. On and Off the court.

  • @moffjerjerrod1579

Because when Bird played, and other great players who would dominate like Magic and Jordan, you did not have the touchy touch fouls. You drove the lane, you had to deal with the fact that three guys may foul you HARD, but only one gets called on it. It is a three point game and Bird could shoot threes with his eyes closed. And his basketball IQ was off the charts because he not only saw what was happening at the moment, he say was was GOING to happen next. You also have to, when talking about players from different eras, take into account the medical, rehab, training and nutritional regimens players have now that were unknown and unheard of 20, 30 40, 50 years ago. Bird played the last couple seasons with a completely messed up back. And was still dominating. If he had been able to have that fixed with modern capabilities he could have played longer. In fact he had wanted to retire not too long after Boston drafted Len Bias but when Bias ODed and died Bird decided to keep playing as long as he could.
