Hi Mads- HVAC engineer here. When you coil up the extra length from your lineset you need to store the coil horizontally. The way you have the lines now with the ”roller coaster” loops will result in oil trapping in the bottom of those lines which will starve the compressor of its lubrication. Having the coil laid down flat will make it much easier for the oil to be brought back to the suction side of the compressor through the vapor line. Great installation otherwise. Cheers!

Just installed a mini-split system in my house and agree, they are awesome. I would strongly encourage you to move your ODU (out door unit) down below the boat to keep it out of the direct sunlight. Your lineset is plenty long enough to allow you to put it down out of the way somewhere protected and shaded. Just make sure to set it on some blocks or perhaps some more epoxied shitty plywood to keep it off the ground a bit.

Mads - Be sure to clean the air filter(s) on the indoor unit of your mini-split weekly especially if your are doing any cleaning or repairs inside! I would also pick up a heavy duty HEPA class air filter as the filter on the mini-split is not fine enough to pull out all the particulates!

Liked. I put 2 inverter heat pumps (mini splits) on my boat. I will never go back to marine units. They are so much more efficient. No more pulling jellyfish out of the intake. It doesn't stop working when the water temp hits 40. I had the deck space for the outside units. You should at one for your final build.

I worked at a Canadian lumber yard in my younger years and was also highly disappointed in the quality of the plywood we sold. Then I got a job at a plywood factory down the road and was amazed to find the most beautiful plywood I had ever seen. When I enquired about the discrepancy it was explained that all the good plywood is exported to affluent overseas countries like Denmark and Japan for 3x the price the locals are willing to pay!

i think there is an option in the AC that is made for removing moisture, so try it out for few nights when you have ALL the openings closed in the boat. and remember to cast the condensation pipedrainthingazig outside the railing, so it drains to the ground. oh!!! and! while doing the oh glorious sanding, remember to power the unit and cover the inside unit, otherwise the glass dust mixed with moisture WILL glog up the AC. best wishes from the north

Another way of making temporary plywood "waterproof" is to saturate it with Titebond III, wood glue. Then paint over it. I am going to give it try on a "little library" in my front yard. I have had two boxes made from "outdoor" plywood delaminate. Keep the vacuum pump and refrigeration gages for future cruising. AC/Refrigeration repair is always a skill in short supply!

What's funny on those mini split is I don't think you really need that pump. If you look for a DIY mini-split the compressor has a little extra fluid in them. I have a HESSAIRE 18,000 BTU that runs on 120 volts. It was a DIY. I needed NO EXTRA equipment to install it. you hook up the lines to the head unit and the compressor unit. open on the flow sode and see if it leaks. You can shut it off if necessary to repair any leaks. And should I ever want to move it you turn on the unit and close the outlet side and let it run a minuets then close the inlet side of the compressor. That should have sucked all the refringent into the compressor. then you can move it. This unit works GREAT. I think that ALL these units would be the same. Great video. your doing a GREAT JOB!!

for those wanting to run AC off battery, Rovsun sells a more efficient one for a little more money. We have the 9000BTU in our 22ft RV and it pulls ~250w avg in 95+ degree heat to maintain 68 degrees.

Try putting the outdoor unit under the boat so it is out of the sun, you should be able to get an extra coil from the manufacturer, but you may have to get an conditioning engineer to put a small amount gas into the system, overall you will save on energy.

The Mads impression is very generous and humorous coming from a successful start up boatbuilder. I think Mads is developing a robust process on how to set up and prepare for a major refit, from the 'previous refit' home base, the location, the workshop van, etc. I hope you have scheduled in time for your adventures, time with your local boat/club buddies, sure there's lots to do, but you have to live well and healthily.

100% that lead is valuable. I have several hundred pounds of the stuff in plate and shot form.
As for plywood. I feel your pain. I will say, if you need a full bunk (40 sheets of 3/4", 60 sheets of 1/2") plywood of better grade most of the big box stores can order it, but holy h3ll a bunk is expensive. I Always got mad at Izzy Swan when he'd be "Yea, you can get this from the big box store, and it's pretty good, you just order it up". When I went to see about it they said "You need to order the whole bunk". I was "Nope". LOL.
I will say, this is where you should have found a way to bring that beast up to Michigan and worked on her by Ava's parents. We have a place called "Public Lumber" not too far from me or Ava's family (7 mile and I-75). HOLY WAH! What do you want? If they don't have it, they can usually find it. It may cost you, but yea, they can usually source quite a bit of stuff. I bought Teak plywood there for our old SeaRay 268. I had to wait a bit because I only wanted 1 sheet of 1/2" (12.7mm), but it was worth the wait. I could have had it faster if I ordered a bunk (not at $125/sheet back then...now $250 per 4'x8' sheet). Otherwise, yea, plywood just sucks around here now. Used to be common to find 9~11 ply in the stores, now all you can find is 5 ply for 3/4" (19mm). Horrid stuff for high price!

15 to 20 amps is a lot, hope you got a very heavy extension cord
Could ha drilled a hole down through the boat and put the outside unit under the boat

Get a cheap pump at HF and pump out the keels. Or cup/bucket/sponge if there's not a lot.

100% agree. Mads needs to remember that he has only seen .00001 percent of our country. A little hard to make a blanket statement like that with no real knowledge.

It was good to say hello to you both at the Selden booth at the boat show. Admire your work, big project, and I am looking forward to seeing how this develops. As I refit my 79 Swan 441, I look at what you have done for some help/ideas and real world tests of equipment.
I put a E40i on our coahroof based on your build.
Again thanks for all that you do.
