I started watching just before Athena got purchased and it's super cool to watch at the beginning of the next boat restoration. This is going to be a long, fun road.
Thumbs up to the choice of sponsor. Seems like a product you would genuinely use and not some green shit drink. Having you talk through the features on various nerd related products definitely plays to your strengths and works for the sponsor so keep it up and pay those bills!
Ive become spoiled. I feel for these guys because I’ve heard from a number that they feel a lot of pressure to their fan base to post regularly and on time. I forget sometimes I get to enjoy them for free.
Mads, I've been watching your work for years now. It's become "my Sunday video" love it. I've kept my mouth shut and quietly watched away quite content... however.. with this new build 22 minutes is not enough anymore.. I need my fix. How about setting up a time lap feed or something to tide people over. Please. I need more. 👍🏼👍🏼
I use a Dustopper cyclonic particle separator (it snaps on top of a 5-gallon bucket) inline before my shop vacuum. It collects all of the dust, allowing me to use a HEPA filter and a bag in my shop vac, and not spray the micro particles of my ground fiberglass out of the vacuum. It's inexpensive and works really well.
Thank you for all the many hours of entertainment. I'm subscribed to many channels but yours is the only one I feverishly wait for each Sunday. Keep being awesome.
Mads, in this episode I saw you using the hand rail as you climbed stairs. Based on your opinion it wasn't necessary, Ava should charge you every time you touch the hand rail.
That is a good comment. Yes we have to make some speed to the captain. But I like this project and the project people. This will be a very good catamaran.
Haha, sure 😁 My reasoning for not wanting a handrail is that I didn’t have one during Athena’s refit and I was afraid it would get in the way when hauling bigger stuff upstairs. The handrail is removable (just bolted to the stairs) so now we get the best of both worlds 😉
Appreciate your prep and planning. One comment - you’re now working on a cat, not a mono. Weight is everything. Granted, it’s not a light weight cat, but it would be easy to make it even heavier. Like those bilge sumps could be elephant steps LOL. “Oh it’s just a few ounces” - but that’s how it goes; you rarely find one single thing that moves the weight needle - no, it’s everything. If every fix you do is a few ounces or pounds heavier, ouch. I suggest you make a big sign over your work table - “how much does it weigh?”. Consider weight first for every choice you make throughout this entire project, and the boat will be able to sail. Go a little over on every project, it won’t.
As you were cleaning the keel and talking about the bilge pump installation, I kept thinking a little rain to just check things would be great. There it was on cue, I feel much better now. Good timing, now you can go forward with the work with confidence.😊Best Wishes!
I had a "Dork Helmet' years ago powered by a shop vac. One day I had to cut some terracotta tiles. My wife had used the shop vac to clean the cats toilet.
Its nice to see you working again. I did like the sailing videos but to be honest, everyone goes where you have been. This is you place. Refit. I will be watching every video just like I did with Athena. And since this is at least a two year project, maybe can come down to help out after I retire. I will need something to do LOL.
Mad you are awesome in your prep and tidiness you put many pros to shame. I'm in awe that you can do all that and make very professional videos with plenty of dry humour. Well done keep it up😎👍
Mads, great video. Quick comment on epoxies and water. Epoxies can cure underwater - with a caveat that the solvents (if any) are gone and no touching or fiddling with it in the panic to stop water. If the epoxy is wet during cure amine blush may occur on the surface - this will need detergent wash to remove (warm - not hot is best), then can be over coated. This works for painting as well. Just in case that happens to you - good to know what is possible.
I'm late to the game and glad you have a new project boat that I can watch in proper order. I wanted to do what you are doing many decades ago. In the early 70's I read a book about someone sailing around the world and my passion for sailing was born in my early teens. I live in SW Florida and can sympathize about the humidity and heat .
Hi Mad's. Had you considered converting your keels to water tanks. Just paint the inside of the keels with a Vinyl Ester Gelcoat/Flowcoat and you are good to go.
Mads, having now done some epoxying and glassing myself (building and tabbing in a little element-resistant shelf for my battery bank) I have a new appreciation for your mastery of the craft. I'll also definitely take the time to make some fillets next time, that seems crucial in getting nice corners! I also see why many folks just choose to paint and call that done. You also have me interested in this foamcore + accelerant glue for simple shape making, that seems way easier than my plywood + glue/screw boxes. Keep up the great work, I need the fiberglassing tips. :)
I don't know if anyone has made this observation yet, but you may want to move the handrail to the left side. As you bring up bulky material, it could get in the way the way it is since you approach the stairs from the right.
Suggestions for your fiberglass rolls: Make a light box out of cardboard or thin plywood with a firm backing and a front attached with a couple of clips.
Hi Mads. Maybe a cheap barbeque cover would work until you can get your sailrite motor swapped out? You can usually get them at Home Depot, they are pretty cheap and often have an elastic rope at the bottom that you can tighten up.
You could stick some velco on the ends of the tarp and on the underside of the bridge deck. That way you could quickly stick it as a ceiling when you are using it.
Not sure if anyone suggested it already but try cutting the glass mat with a roller cutter! They work great, just need a piece of scrap under it! Buy it at a fabric store! Great job and good luck!
Battery powered tools have come such a long way with batteries now having longer usage times and the tools having more power. With all the back and forth and up and down you'll be doing on this project, not having to drag around power cords is going to remove a big headache. Just be sure to get into a good habit of charging your batteries so you always have spares.
I have Bosch batteries labeled from 2014 that are still working awesomely. NOBODY builds batteries like Bosch. On the diesel tanks, nobody sees these. The ones you have are custom made for your hulls. Why buy new ones? You can find a marine tank repair/refurb shop within 30 miles of your current location that can inspect and clean them up, mega-super-spiffy. If need be, they can cut an access hole that can be welded after inspection is complete. Who knows, they may have an inspection cover/panel already installed. Get these cleaned-inspected-repaired and reinstalled, and use the savings to go towards that mast you are going to need!
Ya know what they say, or maybe it was Confucius, I don't know, I old and too lazy to look it up, a journey of 1,000 miles or is that kilometers starts with the first step. You're more than a few steps down the road now. Keep the good stuff coming Mads.
Hi Mads , thank you for the video you always make me laugh when you make a mistake you call yourself. Captain dumb dumb I love it. Keep up the good work always enjoy the videos. , Cliff from Logan City, Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺 I’m on the big island 🏝️
I was going to recommend a step up transformer as well. Most 230v stuff will operate on 50-60hz so usually it’s not an issue. We plan on using one for a few appliances we’ll be bringing back from Europe when we move back to Canada in 2 years.
Perhaps I could point a little fan at it. It seems to be mainly a problem indoors or in direct sunlight. In the shade under the boat, I don't think it's ever overheated :)
You got Welshed on that cat... fulla leeks... 🤣🤣🤣 Oh and is that The Yellow Brick road you're climbing to get aboard ?...puhleeze...no red safety shoes and a lil' white doggy!! 🤣🤣🤣
I know Anker's reputation and products, but it that little power bank really is 90,000mAh that would normally be expressed as 90Ah. Now, look for any lithium battery rated the usual 100Ah and you'll see it is twice as big. That means Anker has magic inside their box, or the 90,000mAh rating is incredibly wrong.
Mads, instead of replacing motors and redoing electrical to fit US standards, consider getting a European solar power station to run those tools. Diego Leon just demoed a Dukitel on his latest channel. It’s heavy but comes on a roller and seems large enough to be able to run for a long time. He seems to get TONs of solar battery to demo, so maybe contact him and see if you van get a few comped. It makes sense to me for boaters to have both output capacities as you will travel to different countries with different power standards.
Nice to see you getting a good solid start on the restoration!! Is there any chance you could relocate the glass rack at the end of the table? That would give you more space to pull out the glass.
Usually that kind of bags have the air taken out during the fabrication and storage process but there are couple air molecules trapped in there that make you easy to separate them before use it, but when the bag had many time on storage (more and more weight over) or they’re moved at lower altitudes those molecules went out and there is a strong vacuum between the plastic sheets, so you need to change the pressure inside by getting them in to higher altitudes or simply warming them to expand the remaining air molecules, other solution could be sliding the sheets on the open part using gloves, with a slightly a sticky or gripping texture otherwise it’s really hard to open them
Nice call priming the metering pump in seperate containers! That way you can pour the different parts right back in, preventing waste :)
Thanks :) Having used the pump for a little bit now, it is absolutely one of my favorite things in the under-the-boat workshop.
I started watching just before Athena got purchased and it's super cool to watch at the beginning of the next boat restoration. This is going to be a long, fun road.

yikes hope all is well , Mads seems to be late posting posting
I'm eagerly awaiting this week's video as well. It's my Sunday evening treat. No doubt there's a good reason.
Same. Wish he posted twice a week. Been thru his entire series like three times. Hope all is well and he’s just itchy from fiberglass sanding.
I looked on patreon and there was something posted 24 hours ago I believe. About ready to go spend the dollar per video membership.

You mean 20 minutes. Don’t forget the oh glorious 2 minutes spent pushing “another” power station.
Great video series. I look forward to more episodes.
@@James-i1t4lyou can add “another” another to that comment in this week’s video 😂 Fair warning, refitting this boat is going to require a lot of ads.
I have only three words “ oh glorious sanding “ yes! We are back this is going to be great . Love ya both

Handrails are handy and Ava is not there, MADs has to take care of himself. Ava's plan all along!😁
😅😂😅😮😊
He did it to touch something of Ava, softie that he is

So great to be back in DIY land with Mads!
Dremel came out with cordless scissors that work great for cutting fiberglass cloth and fabric. They are available at lowes for $40.

About time you finally got the epoxy mixing station. Good decision.
you have a lot of work ahead but its worth it in the long fun. take care and have a wonderful week ahead see you next Sunday
Mads is much too critical of his own work. That sump box looks perfect. 👍😁
Organized and focused, gotta like that.
