I just finished Clockwork Boys and The Wonder Engine by T. Kingfisher (it's the same book, just split between 2 for some reason), and it had Top. Shelf. Banter. Both volumes are on Scribd, too. Your neighbors are miles away, and who knows what they could be getting up to. Spooky spoopy shit.

Grace Draven's Radiance could be the perfect gateway book for you.
I'd definietly say to try something by Grace Draven! Phoenix Unbound by her is really good and has a lot of action and intense plot like high fantasy!
