Hearing the familiar crack and pop of the tree, suddenly opened the floodgate to memories of cutting firewood with my grandfather. Best wishes to you and your family for a fantastic Independence Day.🇺🇸
Jonsered, I had one of those many years ago. Best way to cut a notch (to have a stable hinge for better fall-control of the tree) is to cut your back-cut even with the V of your wedge. Cutting above the V makes a longer hinge that is more flexing and unstable. The notch up or down will work, but when falling downhill, a down facing notch (Humboldt) or angled top & bottom (Open-Face) will provide control for a longer fall (maybe, likely). Biggest things: Know your path away back from the tree, move branches on the ground etc... Always move back-away, never to the sides of the tree (so it doesn't club you) and move far enough to the back (so the tree won't spring back and ram you).
Those beetles are destroying everything. We've lost so many pines here it's hard to keep up dropping em. Cant hurt to have extra. You're going to need more firewood anyway. Can you imagine how many of Vonnies famous pies You're going to need this fall. Not to mention hot coffee. And other meals, be worth it all. I'm happy just to watch it all take place.
Martin, friendly suggestion. Maintain those steel wedges by removing the rolled over edges or get rid of them. Lost a friend to a piece of shrapnel that a glancing blow sent flying right into his jugular. Dangerous. Doc
That is something that I should address in a video. Splitting wood at home with a sledge and wedge a few years ago I heard a ricochet and felt a sting in my hand. A piece had cut deep.
Great work felling those trees Martin , lovin the natural seats your making throughout the forest great place to sit for a rest. Good idea to put down a corduroy road up that trail make it useful even perhaps in the winter .
Thanks as always for the video martin i have seem everyone of your videos been years now. My friends when they here your voice say "you still watching that guy". I say yup guest cabin is moving along now.
Thanks been watching for years and together we got gray but I went bald. This is time well spent. I also have mini cabin off grid but I cheat and use my quad to ride up to it. I have them bears too northern central Michigan. Why they mess with trail cameras is crazy. Take care be safe thanks- rick
I got up to grab my coffee and for a second there I thought you were cranking baseballs in the forest, but no you were driving a wedge into a tamarack!
Glad those trees went the way you wanted them to go. Glad you were safe since you were by yourself. It is nice to see you at the cabin doing the things you enjoy doing. May God bless you and Vonnie in all y’all do. Have a good 4th of July. From deep southeast Mississippi.
Good to see you Martin! Another four trees ready to debark for future cabin build. I might be more excited than you. Can't wait for the fall episodes to begin. You and Vonnie, have a great 4th of July! I think you have some strawberry & rhubarb pie 🥧 on the way! 😁🇺🇸🤤
I am so looking forward to seeing you build that cabinet I'm going to enjoy it with all your friends when they get up there I'd say you all have a good time
Geeeze Martin that area you are working in must be under water with all these deluges we have been having. I am just north of ya over the border in Canada and my property where I am trying to build my log cabin is drowning this year.
You've motivated me to do some trimming and thinning on my trees today. Thanks for the video Martin. Now it's time to check out what's happening in Vonnies kitchen.
Create a fusion of Vonnie's world famous pies made with your carmel rolls for the crust and I believe you could Tom Sawyer Jim into building that cabin in no time at all.
Martin. You have been providing me with entertainment and got me going to an off grid cabin. Sometimes alone with God, and sometimes with my buddy and we talk about God. Do you have a buy me a coffee or anything to repay you other than subscribing (did many years ago) or liking (each and every time) and watching til the end to give you max TH-cam points, as to say. By the way, Ray Hughes says Hello!
Oh, I have liked Ray's style a long time. As for support I am content with what youtube sends me. It is about $7000 each year so a lot of coffee's have been bought already. Thanks
Be careful of that tamarack in a log house. They have spiral grain fairly often (at least around where I'am, and it's so tough that when it dries it lifts up on the notches, and you can't get it back down most of the time.
I have 2 of those Jonsred saw - Great saw - Your right about smaller firewood saw for limboing- How many acres do you have w/ your cabin? Looks peaceful & quite Getting harder to find nowadays- God Bless & keep going Strong!
Slightly Concerned about how high off the ground You have the first logs Should you put more rock Underneath To keep the floor from caving?.. Enjoying you and vonnie's videos
My son and I had to cut a tree down in his yard this week due to a storm that went through. I get enjoyment out of that task. Question for you. Where has Jim and Kevin been? Kind of miss you guys ribbing each other.

All good points, trying to perfect that Humbolt is my issue right now.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Yes, most of the time I just cut a standard notch, it is easier.

@bobbynash282-I feel your pain.Where I am in Maine we're losing a lot of our pines too.
We are making the pies smaller so I can have more in the freezer this fall.
Lumberjacking on Saturday morning! And a fine job of it too. Morning Martin! Pot’s on the stove. Get ya a cup and we’ll cut another one. 😃
Sounds great!
Always great vids. Thankyou !
You are a hard-working son of a gun I'll say that for you. Good vid.
Glad I can still get out there.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Well Done Martin, Thats a talent, dropping timber where you want it, Thanks for sharing that !

So good to see you, Martin. My Saturday video watching with my coffee. 😊
Wonderful!
Martin, those trees are beautiful. I love how you have seats along the trails, so cool and practical. 👍
A little planning ahead pays off.
😊great videos. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you like them!
It’s in mid 99’s here with high humidity. Thankful for whoever invented A/C
AC what's that😆
Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning.
Bad last week but now good here in IL.

Great video Martin. Thanks for sharing.
Nice to get a few extra trees drying.
Working on the road substrate is a fine long-term project.
All in good time.
Awesome video
Thanks for the visit
Lots of work again. Thanks for the video.
Another task taken care of.
Great work felling those trees Martin , lovin the natural seats your making throughout the forest great place to sit for a rest. Good idea to put down a corduroy road up that trail make it useful even perhaps in the winter .
Absolutely
Time to make the coffee! Nice video this morning. Thanks for sharing!
No problem.
Thanks as always for the video martin i have seem everyone of your videos been years now. My friends when they here your voice say "you still watching that guy". I say yup guest cabin is moving along now.
Thanks for staying the long haul.
I cut my own firewood and I have three jonsered saws All three are 2077 turbos@@TheNorthwoodsman1
Wow, plenty of power in those.
HI MARTIN, YES THERE IS STRATAGES TO LOGING. YOU MANAGE QUITE WELL. NEVER HURTS TO KEEP LEARNING. Do take care. Fl.
That's the plan!

The bears must hear the camera.
That is some big honkin' trees!
So nice and straight too,
Good job, Martin. 💪
Thanks
I got up to grab my coffee and for a second there I thought you were cranking baseballs in the forest, but no you were driving a wedge into a tamarack!
Keep you on your toes.
Awesome share, enjoy your day
Glad to share the good times.
I got a workout just watching you pound the wedge into that last Tamarack!
And you had no pie to rejuvenate you.
Glad those trees went the way you wanted them to go. Glad you were safe since you were by yourself. It is nice to see you at the cabin doing the things you enjoy doing. May God bless you and Vonnie in all y’all do. Have a good 4th of July. From deep southeast Mississippi.

Hey, you watched her first!!
I forget where I put my car keys, and you can keep track of an entire inventory of boards and trees spread out all over the forest 😂
I may not know what I have forgotten out in that forest.
Happy Saturday Martin 🇲🇫 😊
Thanks for stopping in.
A great start to the day, a visit up north to spend a few minutes with Martin. Great job and video.
Glad to share the good times.
I am so looking forward to seeing you build that cabinet I'm going to enjoy it with all your friends when they get up there I'd say you all have a good time
😆
It should be a productive and good time come fall.
Geeeze Martin that area you are working in must be under water with all these deluges we have been having. I am just north of ya over the border in Canada and my property where I am trying to build my log cabin is drowning this year.
So flat back there that it gets wetter but never floods.
Always awesome! 👍😎🇨🇦
Such is the cabin area.
Chaps, face/head protection, gloves, etc. would be a good teaching opportunity.
You are absolutely right.
You've motivated me to do some trimming and thinning on my trees today. Thanks for the video Martin. Now it's time to check out what's happening in Vonnies kitchen.
More pie time over that way.
Gramps, get the lead out and build that cabin before winter sets in!
Sept.30 the gang will be there and the walls should go up fast.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 I'm earmarking that date. Good luck in advance.
thank you
Nice to have you stopping in.
Chery pie is my favorite too, but I'll take just about any pie otherwise.
I know what you mean, Vonnie just made Strawberry Rhubarb but I was able to choke it down.
progress times ?, good stuff, thxs for sharing...
ONe more step in the right direction.
Hello Martin. 👍❤️💖🥰💕🇺🇸🙏
Good morning!
Good job 👍🏻. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻
Thanks

Martin, you should have taken those tree's down last fall when it was cooler out. They would be ready for milling now. Lot's of work. Take Care
The peeling is so easy in the spring and that makes it worth a little sweat.
Be careful of that tamarack in a log house. They have spiral grain fairly often (at least around where I'am, and it's so tough that when it dries it lifts up on the notches, and you can't get it back down most of the time.
I have heard that. These have been cut and peeled for years so hope most of that is behind us.
Good video, do you have a date for the cabin raising yet
I will be back at the cabin Sept.23 to get more prep work done and the walls will go up Sept. 30.
Is the guest cabin going to be nicer than the main cabin, so much so that the guest cabin becomes the main cabin?
About the same. I do not plan on moving over to it but we will see.
I have 2 of those Jonsred saw - Great saw - Your right about smaller firewood saw for limboing- How many acres do you have w/ your cabin? Looks peaceful & quite Getting harder to find nowadays- God Bless & keep going Strong!
I have 40 acres and the best part is that it sits in the middle of 40 square miles of state and federal lands.
Slightly Concerned about how high off the ground You have the first logs Should you put more rock Underneath To keep the floor from caving?.. Enjoying you and vonnie's videos
In coming videos you will see that I have added more foundation rocks.
NOW TIME FOR COFFE AND CHERRY PIE.
The plan.
Great videos. I can't get enough. Really want to see the final product of your hard work. 👍🏻
You and me both!
👍🏻🇺🇲
Are you allowed to bring a skidder in to the cabin?a winch with a tripod out of 3 trees would make short work of setting the logs
Too much bog so even in the winter it will never happen.
My son and I had to cut a tree down in his yard this week due to a storm that went through. I get enjoyment out of that task.
Question for you. Where has Jim and Kevin been? Kind of miss you guys ribbing each other.
Kevin was wandering out west and Jim was busy with grandkids so all good.
Maybe youve already talked about this but im wondering if you have any pesky ticks up there? They are really thick here this year !
A few while I was there but not the horror stories I have been hearing about other northern areas.
Hey martin how far away are you from Canada or Duluth? I hsve property 50 miles sw of Duluth?
SW of Baudette.
be easy now wood's heavy
Work smarter, not harder.
Sure wish you would wear a helmet. A friend of mine was killed a couple weeks ago from a falling limb of a neighboring tree.
Good point, not sure where it was that day.
rest your saw on the tree as much as you can. Let the saw do the work, not you.
I seem to have trouble getting it down and having the teeth holding the saw and pivoting. At least that is what I think I see the pros doing.
