  • Sara Kevern, a registered dietitian and nutrition support specialist at Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health, discusses how to best adjust your diet to manage CMT symptoms. Now a member of the CMTA Advisory Board, Sara joined the Stanford neuromuscular team in 2019 to inaugurate and build nutrition services, and she works as part of the multi-disciplinary clinic with both adult and pediatric CMT patients to help optimize their nutrition.

very well delivered, thank you! Finally a specialist saying no supplements can replace good nutrition. So many people with CMT are on vitamin B complexes or other supplements that are not really needed if a good diet is followed.

My family has 1X which shows up differently each generation was not diagnosed until I was in my 30's and had no systems but my grandson is a lot like my father just not as bad since he was 9 and now 25.

I have CMT and I live a plant-based lifestyle. I get plenty of protein from beans, tofu and so forth. I also take a few supplements and hemp protein. I think my diet has been very beneficial for me. It keeps me at my optimum weight and gives me better energy than a meat-based lifestyle. Carrying around too much weight is very bad for people with CMT. Too much stress on the muscles and joints. It's much easier to carry around a light body than an overweight one.

Since I've been on carnivore diet my symptoms have been so much better. Always avoid carbs, sugar, seed oils and anything processed.

I know this is old but sometimes I don't see videos until they are old and I have a question.
When you say "we" need or "we" don't need are you speaking of people in general or just people with CMT.

Any information on if a vegan diet could potentially be beneficial for nerve function?

A vegan diet could potentially be harmful for nerve function unless you’re properly and very carefully supplementing under a doctor’s supervision. I didn’t do this and suffered some major consequences.

@@animalcrackers8880 agreed. it's important to be incredibly cautious of people advising going vegan for health reasons. this is because most vegans choose this way-of-eating for ethical reasons so you can't trust them to deliver unbiased nutrition advice.
